I bought this game for my 6 yo DD. I tried it out first and had a hard time remembering everything once the tutorial was over. I am not even 40 and have great eyes, but I could HARDLY read the words on the upper screen...way too small!
We are trading for something else. (P.S. We are not huge gamers and are new to the DS system).

A caveat: I'm over 50, with no experience yet of Zoo Tycoon on a PC, but I recently bought both Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2 for the DS. Playing the campaign games, in which a player has to satisfy increasingly harder goals, held no appeal for me, but I loved the idea of using freeform mode to custom-build a zoo. This style of play is much more fun in Zoo Tycoon. Zoo Tycoon 2 has severe limits on the number of scenic items you can place in a zoo, does not let you alter the zoo terrain outside an exhibit, and has a selection of scenery items that were less appealing to me. In Zoo Tycoon I've had a lot of fun using the fountain and fresh-water tiles to create little water gardens throughout a zoo, an impossibility in Zoo Tycoon 2. Similarly, in Zoo Tyccon I could be generous placing park benches; Zoo Tycoon 2 let me place about 30 scenic items total. If designing a zoo is as much fun for you as acquiring animals or meeting challenges, you may prefer Zoo Tycoon over Zoo Tycoon 2.
I like it

I thought this game would be cool, but you can't even tell what kind of animal it is! If you absolutly love zoo tycoon, go ahead and buy it. If you don't, then leave it on the shelf.
I'd recommend spending your money elsewhere

I bought this game hoping my daughter could play it on our plane trip. I tred it out first to see how easy it would be for her. It doesn't even work right. I own the DS and I only play the Brain games so it gets used a couple evenings a week. My DS is in great condition. This game was so difficult to play. The touch pad is nothing like I expected. You can't touch where you want to place an object. You instead have to move around using the arrow pad. Problem is that the game is set in a diagonal mode. So you can't simply make a straight path by clicking up or down. You have to zig zag back and forth to get your path straight. Then the touch part is quirky. I thought I was doing it wrong, but you have to touch the object a couple times before it selects it. Then I tried to place the water reed and it never let me. It showed green and yet no matter where I tried to put it, it would never actually place the reed. Again, I thought I was doing the wrong steps, but when I tried to place a tree in the zebra exhibit, it worked fine. So it wasn't user error. In free mode you start with a few animals. Problem is that when I placed the zebra, the foliage that pleases the zebra isn't available yet. So they were unhappy. Never mind that you can't see anything because the screen is too small. Yeah, this game is going back for sure!
Fun game, but to many glitches

I actually liked this version better than the PC game. To me it was easier to understand and the controls are really good, I just couldn't get into the PC game. The biggest problem is the no saving more than one game at a time.
Even tho this is a fun game the reason I gave it two stars overall is because I can never finish a game. I get the highest rating for my zoo, I have plenty of money, I have no more than 7 or 8 exhibits, and then it won't let me buy anymore, not even a trashcan. This is extremely frustrating. This happens every time I start a new game. I have friends who own this game and they don't have this particulat problem, but they have other glitches. This game should have had better testing before it was released. I really hope they fix the glitches and release a second one.
Better then What most Say

You'll see on most of these reveiws that this game is bad. They're wrong. This game has its ups and downs. The ups are that:
1. it doesn't matter how big the exhibit is, no matter how big you make it, your animal will be happy.
2. You need to have a zookeeper for each exhibit. No more having to have staff gates or bad zookeepers not being able to get to the "Big Cat Poop" like the PC game.
3. Unlike the PC game, this game tells you wether you animal is happy with your exhibit. Ex. I had put to much Savannah Grass biome for the exhibit. It tells me that I need less savannah grass and more Fresh Water.
4. Instead of buying food, your zookeeper has that job himself. He'll pick out the right food for that exhibit.
5. This game has a lot of things you need to unlick in it, but I like it. Unlike the PC game you have to work for more animals. Like doing Reasearch Projects.
Now the downs. I think that these downs are just minor problems and they are very easy to get around.
1. No map like the PC game.
2. Bad graphics
3. You can't go down really close in guest mode like the PC game. The closest your are is about really all you need to see.
4. You can only have one game saved at a time.
5. Unlike the PC game, even on the freeform game, you have a limited amount of money. Like on the PC game you have unlimited money.
I hope this reveiw helps you. Most of these reveiws say it's not worth buying the game but really, it is worth buying.

I love zoo tycoon and it is a great game, but there is somthing they diddn't put in the instructions. The animals can escape, and it is very hard to fix the fence because the instructions don't tell you how. If the instructions told you how to fix the fence, the game would be perfect.
Challenging and fun

I have enjoyed playing Zoo Tycoon. It can be rather involved and sometimes slow when you're creating a zoo with all the requirements. However, the animals and layouts are interesting. I've found that it's easier to please the animals than the humans! This game is good if you have time on your hands.
