The game dose have a learning curve. Don't expect this game to be an easy arcade style game with bright fun colors. This game also isnt made for people who have bad mental mapping. And like most playstation games nothing is going to hold your hand to the end of each level.... This is a hard game but the dogfights give it better action than just about any other game out there.
Fantastic Game

Descent Maximum is not just for teens because adults can play this game also. I am an adult and I play this game with a thirteen year old and it is lots and lots of fun. Glenn Rubenstein from the Editorial Review asks "how much compelling gameplay does it offer in the long run?". I would say that this game is very compelling and what he describes as confusing is what makes this game so much fun.
An awesome game

I've been addicted to the Descent games since I got Descent 3. I have just bought this game used, The graphics are about the same as the PC games, I have never played Descent II, so this seems new to me, and if you have a PlayStation 2 and a PlayStation 1 memory card, and you don't have to go to all that trouble to find a copy of the Descent II game, and when you get it it doesn't work on your modern PC, it handy to know this game is almost like Descent II and works on a PS2. This game did not make me feel sick at all. The only major complaints about this game is that some levels are really dark, and this game does not have the flairs to light areas up, which is irritating, also, the Guidebots AI should have been better, since it's retarded...
Flying through mines and having dangerous robots attack you from corners and mega huge, I mean huge, boss robots and tons of awesome weapons is very thrilling. So if your looking for an excellent and very exiting 1st person shooter game, this is the game for you.
It's sad that today the creators (Interplay and Paralax) of this game no longer exist, and the creation of Descent 4 canceled, which could have been a very detailed game. But if someone was to buy the copyrights of the Descent games and create new Descent games, like one for the Nintendo DS, or Descent 4, I would buy them all, and so would whole websites dedicated to Descent. I also think distributation of models of the ships would attract attention.
Exciting, Thrilling, Spooky, all in one cool game!

OK, maybe we can agree that the Descent series of games may not be the most graphic-intensive games, BUT, they ARE thrilling to play! Tons of huge, dark, spooky levels, with freaky little robots around each dark turn.
The controls are a bit tricky (no use of the analog sticks)....So, keep that in mind. But, in all fairness, due to the way your spaceship is flown, it would be hard to use the analog sticks for this game. Flying your ship is a bit hard to get used to, at first. So, take your time to get used to ALL of the buttons & controls.....Belive me, this is important. You have every type of flight available to you....Yaw, pitch, tilt, spin, roll, (360' in EVERY direction)!!! Once you get inside the mine shafts, you'll see why all this comes in handy. Yes, you can lose your bearings VERY quickly, so, you really need to pay attention.
Plenty of cool things here: Weapons & upgrades, shields, turbo, bad robots trying to kill you, cool music score from "TYPE-O-NEGATIVE", and "Skinny Puppy", to name a few.
If you're looking for something a little oldschool, a bit different, maybe you like flight sim games, a little shooting, cool music, and a REAL dark & spooky vibe....you'll really like this game.
I say: "Give it a shot!" It's a real gem of a game, very underrated, and you can probably pick it up for an awesome price! I have both of the original Descent games for my Playstation, I bought them new in 1996 & 1997, and I STILL play them to this day!!!
It's worth the price of admission!!!
