I played CoH for a few months when it first came out, and I really enjoyed it until WoW released. After playing Blizzard's drug-like addicting game for 2 years, I just can't take it anymore. To be on top of content you have to play 8 hours out of the day, raid on your guild's schedule, and invest almost all of your free time on a game that has no real benefit.
I decided to pick up CoV (since I knew it was the lesser of 2 evils) and I've been quite content. You can play on your own time, do a few missions, then go on your merry way (I've actually seen the sun this week). So if you're looking for a game that isn't a time sink, but is still loads of fun, definitely pick up CoV. If you want to play a game where you sit in front of your computer screen half of the day, and is a little more in depth, then play WoW. Just learn to play in moderation.
Great game to be a comic baddie but..........

....the fun dont last long and thats why i gave it 3 stars.
On the bright side, this game is perhaps the most fun mmo out there. If you ever want to be a comic book baddie here is your once in a life-time chance.
The fun starts with the awesome character creation process. You can create one of the most detailed and unique baddie ever to grace the villianous Mercy Islands. You than choose among the game classes which are pretty much tad altered City of heroes exisiting classes with the only excpetion of Mastermind. This really new class lets you have pets to act as group. You can have upto 6 pets over the game life cycle out at one time. However, the advantages of this class in pure pve is pretty obvious but you really suffer if you desire to do pvp. Currently, like most other mmo's this pet class is severly lacking in pvp scenario against non-pets class. The other classes just ignores your pet(since pets damage output is low) and head straight to you and drop you with few hits since MM class dont have many indvidual high dps attacks or defensive spells to make much of a dent without the pet contributing and holding the target away from the player. Hopefully they will balance the classes at some point but right now pvp is not for the master mind class.
Once done with the character creation and choosing your class you hit the street and do mostly instanced quests and keep on beating ever increasing numbers of bad guy who are mostly recyled city of heroes villains..surprisingly you dont get to fight many heroes which kind of is very dissapointing. I can understand fighting some villians here and than for supermacy but the bulk of the game should be directed towards fighting heroes which is sadly not the case.
Also the game with increasing lvl's mostly at Level 20+ forces you into grouping like City of heroes. Its very hard to solo most quests at that point as you end up facing Elites and Bosses grouped together. Surely you can do it by taking inspirations over and over again or taking a group with you but if you are trying to play Solo than the mission are very hard and challenging much more than they should be. Check out World of warcraft for example...the game offers a wide variety of soloable and group missions with enough variety that solo player can do quest too with less epic gear while group mentality is rewarded with the hardder quests with great epic loot. There is no real money or loot or economy invloved in the game. However, if you like to group than you can find loot for your super group Base if you plan to make one(which can be attcked by opposing players in their own super groups). But to get that loot or Salvage as its reffered too you have to play in super group missions mode too meaning you are doing a quests with others in your group and you are not operating Solo..so we have yet another instance of forced grouping. I know people play these games for social interaction but the game should also cater in a limited sense to Solo players meaning be Soloable but at a cost of lesser rewards. Some find the game Solable but to me who is a veteran of many other mmo's..this game is primarily not solo friendly and the mission are way too hard to solo through as you progress through the game. If you like an excercise in frustation you might enjoy soloing these exceedingly hard missions but if you want to have fun than its not gonna happen.
So thats my 2 cents....The game is great fun while the fun factor lasts. The game has no real longievity in my view. I expect this game life cylce on my computer to last either through the free 30 days trial or maybe a month extra at most just like the fate of its elder brother City of heroes. Than i will be back full-time to my casual friendly Lvl 44 Warlock on World of warcraft.
hmm

This is one of those games wear you cant decide if its good or bad.
One of the things that makes it bad is its not the easiest mmorpg to just pick up and play. I wouldnt say just stay away form it if your new to mmorpgs but it will just take you longer to get a hang of things.
One of the big problems ive noticed is the nice set of lag that comes with this game. Im running cable here and play other mmorpgs fine but this one is choppy and slow but usually not bad enough to kill you just a bit choppy.
I made one character then one right after it and when i went to my previous character it was gone. Then a day later It started showing up with my newest created characters gone. I dont exactly understand this but whatever it is it is horrible.
Not a super addicting game at all. I dont think you will find yourself lost for hours if you have other games like WoW and instead will be turning it off to play WoW. I can see how it might get a bit better as you progress and 20 bucks is cheap for a game but to charge you 15 a month it isnt worth it. I would pay 5 tops for this considering they need to fix alot.
The combat system is a bit weird sence you can only attack with powers and have no default attack. Some of the powers usually recharge pretty quickly though.
Its really not a game that makes you feel like you want to be in a group. I cant explain this really but I havnt been in a group once but this could be because of the lack of players. Yes not many seem to play this game and I can tell because you can usually get the name you want the first time and I would like to see you try that with a game like WoW.
There are a lot of choices in costume so you can spend awile doing it to fit your likings. Its easy and simple to use.
All in all I think its just plain okay. I wouldnt call it anything else and if you are bored of all the mmorpgs out now then get this but its hard to put a game with super powers up against a game like guild wars and other things like that sence their 2 complete different things.
Dont expect to be crazily addicted to this game but it has just enough juice to keep you playing the game in general.
Dynamic, Combat, Excellent Stories, but you need a high end PC

I've played City of Heroes for over a year, and bought City of Villains as an add on, not exactly knowing what to expect other than Bases.
What I found was an amazingly well crafted setting, with tonnes of atmosphere and outstanding stories.
A couple of problems, on some of the mission maps, you do get lag if you're PC hasn't got a newer AGP Card and at least a gig of ram. It can get a little daunting for those, like myself, on a machine over a year old.
The combat beats everything I've ever seen, including World of Warcraft, which has absolutely nothing in comparrison. The combat is completely three dimentional, and dynamic, not turn based. Holding your own in Player V. Enviro or Player Vs. Player requires your full attention and a lot of skill. Expect to die a LOT in PvP.
Support from third party websites like Vidiotmaps and Warcry is top notch, and the Developer support is second to none.
Many are discovering City of Heroes and City of Villains and finding how amazing it is to be part of the fastest paced MMO there is.
Good but not great

City of Villains, like City of Heroes, has the best character creation system of any MMORPG I've played.
After playing World of Warcraft, however, the game world of CoV just seems a little lacking.
WoW has an active economy, CoV does not.
WoW has great graphics, CoV has decent graphics, but they feel a bit dated.
WoW has skills and crafting, CoV does not.
The main thing is that WoW has some things to do beyond straight combat, CoV does not. Almost all the quests in CoV are the same - go into a building, kill everything inside, and sometimes there are a few glowing items to click on. There isn't even much variety in buildings, you will go through the same layout over and over and over.
Don't get me wrong - building your own character and playing them is lots of fun, but for me anyway, the game just lacks the depth to keep me interested.
A life of crime is very addictive...

While not perfect [what game is...?] City of Villains is an extremely fun game with tons of options, and you will probably quickly discover that you're a hopeless addict. In no other MMORPG that I am aware of can you engage in such antisocial activites as robbing banks, stealing rare artifacts from museums, beating up those who would challenge you for criminal supremacy, destroying public property, and kidnapping - those are just a few examples - which makes it all the more fun. Great stress-relief!
Also, you will look at *NO* dragons, no Hobbits, no elves and just remarkably little "middle-earth" type content in general, which is a huge plus in my opinion. There is one main magic-themed enemy group, but they can be avoided a great deal of the time if desired.
Teams are nice but usually not necessary, which can be a big plus.
Those are some of the pros; my main con is that CoV is an extremely graphics-intensive game that will tax older computers severely, and they seem intent on increasing that severity with each subsequent issue. If your computer can handle it, come on over to the Rogue Isles and join us in tearing up everything in sight, reigning in terror and trashing public property; you'll quickly discover it actually feels pretty good to be soooo downright bad.
NCSoft Customer Support Lacking

City of Villains over-all is a fun game. The new Arch-types (classes) are fun to experiment with. The story-lines are a little more intriguing than in City of Heroes, but only because the Villain stories are more prone to double-cross. And the optional Hero vs Villain PvP is quite a rush, if you're into that kind of thing.
An important issue to me is Customer Support, and NCSoft (who supports CoV and CoH, as well as Lineage and Guild Wars) doesn't seem too concerned. When you submit a petition in-game, you recieve an email asking for more information - not too handy while you're still playing the game. Several hours after you respond to the email (usually 2-3, but in my case yesterday it was 5!, and one I submitted in the first few days of release was 18!) you'll either get a GM in-game offer to assist you, or an email explaining that the game is functioning as intended.
Now, imagine if you will, reading a comic book. All of the action takes place in the first five pages. The next fifty pages is filled with the Hero (or Villain) doing absolutely nothing but searching for a nearly invisible item - no dialogue, no action, no nothing. Pretty dull, wouldn't you say? That is apparently how the game is "functioning as intended".
If you don't mind paying a subscription rate for that kind of service, then CoV is a pretty good game. Otherwise, you may want to look into something else.
Great game!

I find city of villains to be a unique(from other MMORG, not from city of heros!)game with fast action paced easy to play interface.
The barrier for learning and enjoying the game is low, and the game itself has enough depth to enjoy to your moneys worth.
lol. you're wrong

this game is NOT being discovered because everyone knows it's just like CoH with different powers and costumes. this game is just as repetitive as CoH. Every mission is still the same...gee, who would have thought! WoW is still the most fun MMOPRG there is. There is no satisfaction here of killing an extremely tough boss but in WoW there is (lots of epic loot :D). I'll still play CoV here and there if i'm not raiding in WoW. The good things about this game I suppose are the graphics, power effects, costume design. It's OK.
Absolutely horrible.

Cheating: The administrators of the game cheat for certain players and are don't enforce their own in-game rules unless more than 5 people complain.
Gameplay: The game is designed so that it takes forever to level, literally weeks for one level after level 20 (max is 50).
Performance: The game itself is highly intrusive, uses incredible amounts of memory, cpu, hard-disk space (4+gigs) and has many known issues with most graphics cards.
Harassment: There is a lot of solicitation for joining various supergroups, a lot of unwanted invitations. Many people run around asking you for sex on this game if you play a female character.
FEES: There is virtually NO technical support. It costs $15 per month to play this game, even after you buy it. Most people know this, but I do know one person who bought this game without realizing that.
Bottom line: World of Warcraft is MUCH better. Heck, Warcraft III/TFT is better than this.
