Relegation looms

The problems with this game will be patently obvious to any football fans, any hardened football game players and even your dad. It simply doesn't do the beautiful game justice. It has players, it has a ball, it has the rules but if it were a football team then it would be Halifax Town - not a chance of competing with the big boys in the Premiership of videogame footballing.

The only thing exceptional about David Beckham's Soccer is not its complete lack of flair or skill, but rather in the way that it manages to do none of the basics very well at all. It is exceptionally average in all departments.

Passing is haphazard, tackling likewise and your defence, well that's just plain schoolboy. Building a move is frustratingly difficult - even with a team of world class players, because the computer AI has a massive advantage over you - it can judge tackling and passing much more accurately than any human mind is capable of, or rather than the control system allows.

Even in a two-player game it suffers from a lack of cohesion and matches quickly degenerate into long ball tactics. Frustration at player control is a major contributor to this - it reminds us of first generation PSone football games. Which is definitely a bad thing.

The only redeeming thing about David Beckham Soccer is the Arcade games mode. Here Rage has experimented a bit with the old football formula - you can play in beat-`em-up style Survival modes and in classic matches. If only the actual game was good, these would be too.

Even the graphics are little more than average. We're big fans of players that actually look like the real thing - FIFA and ISS2 do this very well. David Beckham Soccer goes the other way, employing generic looking footballers only distinguishable by their race or hair colour. And if you're trying to create an illusion of the real thing on your Xbox then this is definitely a tick in the flaws column.

So there you have it. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that because David Beckham is the best footballer England has produced for a decade, this game will be as well. Too much reliance on the licence and not enough attention to the actual gameplay mechanics have led to a football experience that is decidedly second division.

I read the other reviews of this game and began to think they must be describing a different game!! This is just excellent in all respects...
The game control is great - precise and intuitive (well, after a while), with many dribbling tricks. The ball can be curved a great amount if kicked right, just how Becks the master curler wanted. The whole atmoshere is there, with highly detailed stadia, design your own if you like. Making up your own teams, and change player abilities leads to some exciting gameplay (always very fluid however much is going on). A really great feature is the training mode, which seems much more comprehensive than others. Beckham is huge, a soccer god, plays for Manchester United, and every school kids dream would be to play soccer like him. A fantastic quality bargain. 5 stars.

If u love soccer this is the game for u. unlike other soccer games [edited] that u wanna get better at free kick but can't because the game has no practice which he created himself and now u can save your replays to your xbox console{only} and u could learn better soccer skills while your playing

The David Beckham Soccer game is the best soccer game around and will be, and these are only a few reasons. This is a must get game for any of you sports fans out there. The graphics presented in this game rocks. Totally a full use of the XBOX hardware. The smoothness of gameplay is the excellent. This is truly the BEST SOCCER GAME EVER!

Everything in this game is wacky (aka stupid.) It is really hard and the throw-ins are bad. The reason for all of this poor stuff (and more) is that doing anything is random, like a coin flip. I wouldn't be suprised that there is a coin in the machine and you need to get 3 heads in a row to do something succsesfully which makes the game as a whole worse then pathetic. Buying this would be like buying [edited] speaking of which this feels like an old [edited] so believe me only fools would place this game anywhere but the shelf.
