Yes, another truly great game-- but lacking as an RPG...

I thought I'd post a review to clarify a bit more about the style and gameplay of "Partners In Time." While everyone seems to be getting it right--it is a truly EXCELLENT DS game--it's lacking as a standard RPG, and it probably the bottom of all the Mario RPGs.

First let me make it clear that just because it's the "least good" among the Mario RPGs, it's still a MUST HAVE for the DS. As for the pros: EXCELLENT STORY--I can't stress this enough!!!--It's incredibly unpredictable (up to the very end)--perhaps one of the most unexpected, unpredictable games I've ever played. It has an EXCELLENT battle system involving action and turn-based/RPG tactics. LONG game, at least 20 hours of play time. Nice use of the 2 screens, and some very creative gameplay, items, etc. And also, it's VERY funny--perhaps the funniest of all the "Mario RPGs." The translation works very well, and

Unfortunately, it's not as deep as an RPG should be. It has the nice framework, but it lacks any true depth. While it's unpredictable, it's tightly linear. There's no off-quest exploration or even side quests. The only thing you could somewhat call a sidequest is the "bean collecting" which really can just be traded for badges eventually. There is no other stuff to do branching from the regular story. Of course, the game doesn't suffer from this, which is why I still give it 5 stars. However, unlike the other Mario RPGs, there's not much freedom here. It's really just more of an action title with RPG framework. The lack of stylus use in the game doesn't hurt it either for the same reason. Still a great game.

An actual complaint of mine is that there are NO puzzles. Well, yes, there are things that are supposed to be puzzles, but I just don't find them puzzling since the solution of EVERY SINGLE ONE is told to you practically before you have a chance to solve it. --> "Hey, I wonder what would happen if you tried to ROLL under here?" This really kills the rewarding aspects of this game. The puzzles aren't challenging to begin with, but the on-screen instructions walking you through are a disappointment to myself.

THE BOTTOM LINE: "Partners In Time" is an EXCELLENT game for the Nintendo DS. I'd say it's a must have. However, don't be expecting the same deep gameplay you've grown to love in Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and even Superstar Saga. Though it sets you up with the RPG framework, it's lacking in the "essentials" you've come to expect not only from other RPGs, but even from its "Mario RPG" predecessors.

One of the best games I have ever played.

I absolutely love this game! Some people think that Mario games are easy but they are totally WRONG! This game was really a challenge. I consider it harder than previous versions. It doesn't use many of the DS features but I would still recommend it since it is such a great game.

Very Addicting

The day I got this game, I couldn't put it down for 2 weeks. And I was playing for 4 hours or more in a row. I let my older brother play it, and I didn't get my DS back for a few hours, and when I got it back, my DS had no batteries left. And he's a Sony fanboy too.

Funnest Game on any platform

I loved this game. I played all the way through. The difficulty level is low to medium. I love games like this. Instead of being frustrated and having to buy a manual this played smoothly all the way through. It kept my interest. Had good gameplay and graphics. Didn't annoy me by making me do the same things over and over again. I loved it. I also loved the Mario and Luigi prequel to this on GBA. It's kinda of a light RPG with action elements. I wish they made all RPG's like this. It's short enough to conquer before getting bored of repetition. Give it a shot! It's a lovely game.

I'm almost speechless with this game!! I mean its got am awesome story line, its nice and challenging, and to put the icing on the cake its an rpg! But J. Johnson "the cakelady" needs some common sence. So what if its not like the old 1985 mario bros.? it was released in 2005, not 1985!

pretty good, but the first game takes the cake

I can not get into this game like I could superstar saga. There is something about having to cart around your babyself that just gets very old after a while. Although I must say it is unique and still fun, I had to put it down for a while before I could play it again.

The plot is very good and the storyline works very well. The battling is fun but you have to take up the slack for your downed partners and I have died way to many times due to that.

All in all it is a great game with a few setbacks that really annoy me. I definitely think it is worth the 40$ i spent on it but I am altogether happy with it so do get it.

And you tought their last adventure was hilarious? In this sequel to the not-so-adventure packed Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga, the Mushroom Kingdom of yesteryear is invaded by aliens only known as the fearsome Shroobs. In the Mushroom Kingdom of the present, there's a celebration going on in Princess Peach's Castle. It's the celebration celebrating Professor E.Gadd's latest invention, the Time Machine! Princess Peach was so overjoyed by the invention that she set of to a trip to the Mushroom Kingdom of yesteryear. When the Time Machine returned, it was not occupied by the princess, but by an alien. Luckily, Mario was there to save the day and he did so by defeating the alien. Soon Luigi came saying a time hole appeared on the garden. Mario and Luigi jumped into the Time Hole and later they met their younger selves and the army of the Shroobs.

Mario and Luigi Partners in Time is a must have if you get a DS. My brother and I play this soooooooooo much. The battles are definently the best part. It takes timing and skill when you battle and dodge attacks. It's not really a problem controlling four characters. It's the DS's best game yet.
BUY IT you won't be disappointed.

A little old school with a little new...

Mario and Luigi Partners in Time to me takes me back to the SNES, with the first Mario RPG "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" a game I absolutely love (and would also recommend to anyone with an SNES or an emulator). The reason is the general gameplay for this RPG hasn't changed. You move around different screens, attack the enemies, fight bosses, etc. There is definately a unique (and I suppose you might consider it simplistic) ideology that this game follows. It's an easier version of action/RPGs, you level up, battles aren't random (you can see the enemies you engage on screen) though it is turn-based. This game plays and feels much like the original legend of the seven stars, but has added its own twists and funny little story line to make it, it's own game.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who doesn't mind a lot of chatting, but even more action and puzzles! Another homerun for Mario RPGs.
