Be Careful if you buy this!

I loved the 7th Guest so I bought this game. At Amazon it says that the 11th Hour is for Windows 95 and 98, however, when I got the game the box said that it was for Windows 95 or Dos 5.0 or greater. I could not get the game to work on my computer because I have 98.

If you like puzzle games, the 11th Hour will probably be fun. Just make sure you know what system the game is for before you buy it. If you can't play the 11th Hour I would suggest getting the 7th guest because they made an updated version for windows.

I gave this game 3 stars because it looks like I would enjoy it, but haven't actually been able to play it yet. When I do play it I'll write a better review. Sorry if this isn't helpful.

EDIT (August 11, 2008):
We finally upgraded to XP and I thought I'd try this game again. I was able to get it to work with the help of the internet and a patch (google: 11th hour setup, I used Inferno's site).

I just started the game and it seems really fun, a lot like The 7th Guest: similar puzzles and of course the same creepy mansion. I love the music for the startup menu :-) So far though, I think the 7th Guest was better. The atmoshpere was creepier (as well as the intro video even though it was less realistic) and the story was more compelling. This could also be attributted to the fond memories that I already had reguarding the 7th Guest, while the sequel is completely new to me. For example, I'm not sure if I like the idea of that PDA that you can pull out for clues and videos. It seems a bit obtrusive, pulling me out of the creepy atmosphere. Who knows, maybe it will grow on me. Aside from that I have enjoyed the first few puzzles so far and am really looking forward to playing through the rest of the game. Right now I'm wishing I didn't tell my friends that I would wait for them to play the rest.

More of the same

If you've played 7th Guest, you've played 11th Hour. It's the same house -- the same puzzles -- the same general story -- and most of the same actors. Did they think that adding more and better FMV cutscenes would disguise that? Puh-LEASE.

The only really positive thing about the game is how much fun it is to wander through an abandoned house poking at things. The puzzles are all of the improbable chess-problem sort, and several of them require you to play against the computer, a situation that is not always winnable. Quite frustrating! especially since every wrong move you make gets you an insulting remark by the overacting villain. Add to it that the basic story is hopelessly contrived and silly, the ending unrewarding, and the neverending music boring and hokey, and ... well, I wouldn't call it a winner.

If you're intrigued by ghost stories, go play 7th Guest. It's more fun and at least has the benefit of originality.

Even now...this game spooks me.....

The 11th Hour is a excellent game.

Now first off I don't want to hear any new gamers bad-mouthing this game. This is a old game that came out in the early 90's and it used the software that was available at that time. But it truly pushed the limit in this area because the game looked great back then...and still does today. So yes there were some cheezy effects, but overall this game was very good.

The GRAPHICS are what to be expected of a game of this age, but be warned, despite its old software....the game is still very spooky. You basically navigate a house with pre-rendered backgrounds and what looks to be a early PDA called a GameBook. Full-Motion-Video scenes are shown and look very good.

The GAMEPLAY is everything you could want and expect from a puzzle game. The game progresses with you solving puzzles and making key choices in some areas. This is early attempts at combining a puzzle game with a progressing Horror movie. You do however get help from a small Game Book that resemembles the early PDA's you could buy at Radio Shack. The Gamebook will give you clues and show FMV sequences. You can also save and load your game thru this gamebook. However, BEWARE! If you do not like solving puzzles then you will not like this game.

The STORY is one of the best I have seen for a PC Game. It is very elaborate and will have you wanting to find out more as you progress thru the game. Basically you are a TV producer named Carl Denning. You sleep with one of your hosts from a Investigator show and then break it off with her in a bad way. She soon disappears in a spooky mansion she was investigating during her affair with Carl. This is the Stauf Mansion from the previous game, The 7th Guest. Carl recieves the Gamebook and is instructed to go to the Stauf Mansion to save the host he just broke up with. As you arrive at the Mansion, you prepare to find out what exactly happened to her...and there the story begins..

The MUSIC is hands down, the best PC game score I have ever heard. The producer of the music is a group called, The Fat Man. The music really brings this game go life in a very scary way. The music will implant itself into your mind even when you power off your PC and go to sleep. Some of the music is soo distrubing you won't want to visit some rooms in the house, trust me! Amazon does sell the score of this music on CD if you must have it to own.

Overall this game really made a impact despite the company Trilobyte going belly up. It really did disturb me when I went to go to sleep and I could still hear the music in my head. Oh the infernal melody! If you get stuck you can find some hints at www.tbyte.com . I have honestly played thru the game about 4 times and it still distrubs me. Stauf will taunt you all throughout the mansion, so be prepared for that. Get this game, trust me, if you are a puzzle freak you will enjoy this game. If you can't find it on here...try Ebay. And be sure to check out the Soundtrack to this movie in Amazon's Music area.

An Excellent Game (Crazy old Stauf is still waiting!)

When I first bought The 11th Hour, I didn't know what it was about. However, the game proved to be very entertaining. The first time around, it seems a little overwhelming. Navigation may be confusing, and the story seems odd and detached. But don't let that discourage you: once you've completed the first round of puzzles, the storyline picks up, and the further you go in the mansion, the more you learn. The mad toymaker Stauf is sure to poke fun at your every move, but you can beat him using the clues and help from your ally, Samantha, who stands behind you one hundred percent. As a slight warning to the kids who may have been fans of the original 7th Guest, this game is much more adult-oriented, and you may have trouble understanding the plot. I would not recommend The 11th Hour to anyone less than fifteen years old. This game does require some patience, and it can be fully appreciated only by gamers who take an interest in logic. In general, however, Stauf is hilarious with his riddles and wisecracks throughout the game, and they may help you smile when you feel lost in a puzzle.

It could have been better

The 11th hour is a fair game. It's mix of puzzles and riddles along with the movies are the foundation for a great game, but somewhere along the way someone forgot something. The storyline leaves a great deal to be desired, you quickly begin to dislike all the people in it. The mansion is a little bit creepy, being in ruins, but it just looks more dirty than anything. The puzzles are mostly games against Stauf, rather than real puzzles like in the 7th guest. All of the games/puzzles are lacking the creepy deranged quality that was so prevolent in the 7th guest. The music doesn't leave you feeling paranoid, like you are being watched, one of the greatest losses from the first game. In this game Stauf doesn't taunt you with creepy phrases and sly comments, instead he insults you with none of the famous Stauf wit that leaves your bones chilled and increadibly nervous. I personaly became rather irritated at stauf's comments. All in all the 11 hour is missing all of the elements that made the 7th guest such a horrifyingly unnerving game, but in and of itself it makes a decent horror film/game.

A great follow-up!

Though not as good as the 7th Guest, this sequel was still terrific. With another good story and terrific graphics, this has just as challenging puzzles as the first game with an added twist: You get clues after solving a puzzle that lead to an object in the house that you must find. A nice little twist by giving you a puzzle in a puzzle. In this istallment, you are solving a mystery a little bit more in this game that leads to a choice to be made at the end (I recommend saving at this point so you can see all of the endings). It took a little too long for them to release this game and ultimately started their downward plunge as this game continuosly had it's release date pushed back (go to gamespot.com and somewhere they have a story they wrote about the rise and fall of Trilobyte who originally did this game). Before the company went under, they had started a 3rd game in this series, but the company folded and it was never completed. Oh well. Get this game. You won't be disappointed.

Much Better Then 7th Guest

I have to honestly say that this is one of my all-time favorites to date. If you like creepy, haunting, puzzle-adventure games, you'd probably find this enjoyable. Sequel to the 7th Guest, you are searching Stauf's house of horrors once again, working your way into more and more rooms and areas through puzzles and riddles, with a lot of cool clips and (rather cheesy) live acting footage. What makes this better then the 7th Guest, which I also enjoyed, is you get more hints with the incredibly hard puzzles and you can focus more on the general game, if you so choose. There's multiple endings, a lot of space to cover and little odd and ends to discover along the way. The only problem I had was with the sound, which came out a little choppy. Overall, I highly recommend it if you like ghostly adventure games

Improves on the 7th Guest style

If you loved the 7th Guest, this sequel will not disappoint, aslong as you can get it to run. I managed to, despite 'incompatibleVESA graphics driver' errors on multiple platforms, by downloading afew patches... and invoking it from a DOS window. Compared to 7thGuest, there's much more in terms of movie sequences, and the puzzlesare a bit harder, more of them where you play against the computer. Iespecially liked roaming through the same house as 7th Guest, it nowbeing in ruins, although you will find the door to the left when youwalk in the kitchen still doesn't open.

FANTASTIC GAME--waiting for others to catch up.

7th Guest confused me a little. 11-Hour offers hints or even solves if you get stuck on a puzzle along the way. Why some folks are having trouble with configurations, I don't know. Perhaps after you have played a few Sierra games, I should considered myself an advanced programmer? *L*

THE GAME: You are a celibrity pit against a demonic toymaker named Stauf to save your producer-boss. When you enter his realm, the house, Stauf starts feeding you clues. But clues never come free. You have to earn them. In most cases, Stauf will be laughing at you--even stabbing with cute sarcastic statements.

If you are looking for a puzzle game, this one's for you. 11hour is filled with puzzles. In fact, when you eventually finish the Strategy game, you can go back and play the other puzzles that you enjoyed. Finishing 11-Hour will take some time. There are three endings to this game. Be sure to save under multiple names along the way.

If you are looking for 3-D shoot em up, this is not for you.

I hope they create a sequel or at least a similar quality product. So many out there are high-tech but no dazzle.
