QUAKE is a thrilling, chilling, nerve-shredding experience

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 8

There needs to be more games on the N64 like quake. Games that chill you and give you the occasional jump. The music for this game is very professional, and it could even be its own soundtrack. The music really added to the dark, netherworldish enviorment of the game. If you get into really deep thought in the game, you'll get that feeling like your falling down inside, and your eyes will begin to water, and you'll suddenly shudder. I am writing a book about Quake, and I can't get past the fact that it keeps me up at night, shuddering. . . and wondering what's in the dark .. . . . .

The Successor to DOOM Isn't a Great Success

Quake is a DOOM-like game from the makers of DOOM that attempts to claim the throne of DOOM as best first-person shooter, but falls short. The graphics are nice, but aren't very detailed or varied, and the enemy design isn't very good. The soundtrack is pretty subtle, and isn't all that great, and the sound effects are only okay, but aside from all of those things, it's a nice blast-a-thon with some interesting levels and weapons. Give it a try if you enjoy DOOM or Duke Nukem. That's my two cents.

Improved Doom-style system, unimproved Doom-style storyline

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3

Quake is a fast-paced, first person combat game that combines an improved Doom-style system and monsters with unimproved Doom-style weapons and storyline.

Four "dimensions," or game sections, each divided into five to eight levels, comprise the world of Quake. These sections, "Dimension of the Doomed," "Realm of Black Magic," "Netherworld," and "The Elder World," are dungeon-like settings infested with a wide variety of monsters, traps, secret areas, and hazards. Players must locate keys, typically two per level, in order to progress to the finish. No "action" button(e.g., the space bar in most Doom-style games) is required to open doors or push buttons; such feature are automatically activated when the character is in proximity. Looking and shooting in all directions, including up and down, and swimming are some of the improvements upon the Doom-style system.

A unique interface at the start of a new game allows a player to select different hallways for "Easy," "Medium," "Hard," or "Nightmare" difficulty levels (although the entrance to the latter is actually hidden, so people don't wander into it accidentally). Once difficulty level is selected, the player can enter any of the dimensions. While it is recommended that the dimensions be played through in order, this sort of interface essentially allows players to switch difficulty level in between levels, if desired.

Characters start off with an axe--decidely less dramatic than the Doom chainsaw--and a shotgun with 25 shells, and rapidly acquire an arsenal of progressively deadlier weapons, including a double-barrelled shotgun, a "nailgun," a "perforator," a grenade launcher, a rocket launcher, and a "thunderbolt," as well as ammunition, armor, and various power-ups, such as health, protective suits, rings of invisibility, pentagrams of protection, and a rune that temporarily quadruples your damage, turning you into even more of a killing machine. When a new dimension is entered, your character once again starts off with a shotgun and 25 shells (and the stupid axe).

Monsters include rottweilers, grunts and enforcers (basic soldier types), knights and deathknights (heavily armored, sword-wielding fiends), rotfish (to make the water hazards even more hazardous), zombies that won't stay dead, scrags (sort of like flying worms), ogres (armed with chainsaws and grenades), spawns (big ugly bouncing blobs), fiends (demonic werewolves), vores (spidery monsters), and shamblers (huge beasts that sling lightning). According to the manual, grunts are "goons with probes inserted into their pleasure centers, wired up so that when they kill someone, they get paroxysms of ecstasy." Gratefully, no evidence for this is provided in the game.

Unfortunately, for all that it has going for it, many aspects of Quake also suffer from a marked unoriginality. "You get the phone call at 4 a.m. and by 5:30 you're in the secret installation," the introduction to the game begins. Oh no, not 4 a.m.! Horrors! It then goes on to explain how you are a top notch government agent that must keep some evil being from opening the gates of hell and overrunning the world. Sound familiar? It should, seeing as it is the plot for fully half the Doom-style computer games on the market, including Doom. For a game that clearly required many months of work to produce, it is a bit sad that only about 20 minutes went into developing the background.

And while the weapons are pretty neat, they are not overly original. Essentially, you get two types of shotgun, two types of machine gun, two types of grenade launcher, and an energy weapon. Oh, and that damned axe, which does not even go "swish" or "chunk." In short, a selection that does not measure up to the weapons arrays of Doom or Strife. And some of the monsters, such as the grunts and enforcers, seem repackaged from earlier games.

Overall, however, Quake is a very worthwhile, challenging game that is certain to be a hit with most people who like this style of game. Its hackneyed elements do not really detract from play; a bit more originality, however, might have made this game even more enjoyable.

A fun game with cool graphics

Quake is a fun game but it is awfully violent. Young children probably shouldent play it because they might get scared or grossed out. But it is a good choice for people who enjoy this type of game. It probably will get you frustrated at certain points such as the Wizards Manse. Which was a hard level for me. But you should have fun playing it. The multiplayer mode is a bit weak with only two players at a time, but it is still fun.

This game is an awesome first person shooter! I wouldn't say it is gorey and that bad (well as for me I am 14 so I don't think so) but I don't recommend it for childern under 11. They don't have much of a selection for guns but the ones that they have are pretty cool! The levels are quite hard and you are prone to die it level 2 and 3. Level 1 is easy and simple and the enemies aren't advanced yet. In level 2, you get to see more enemies. WARNING: This game may be scary when played at 10:00 PM at night with lights off. This game has awesome sound effects. The music isn't much but it definately makes it scarier! When I first got this game, I thought it would be like Doom64, stupid, really dark and bad graphics. I was totally wrong. It may be a little dark but it's easier to see than Doom64. The graphics are exceptionalla and it's defintely not stupid. It is somewhat addicting. The multiplayer is okay but it is only compatible with 2 players. You can die really easy in multiplayer. Pretty good but could have been better. Overall, good game with an okay set of weapons and great levels. I recommend buying this used. I'm going for Quake II next!

A very, very, very bad game.

First of all I'd like to start with the dark nature of this game. When first played I thought it was cool. And it is...in the beggining. Then it gets exteremely demonic. One level is called "Satan's Dark Delight." This was a very bad thing for me since I am a Chistian an HATE the Devil more than ANYTHING! This game's graphics are terrible and pathetic. If you wan't a game like this get Quake2, which is not demonic in the least. In summary this game well [stinks]. Don't get it. Get Quake2.

The reason I got into first-person shooters to begin with.

This is the one game that got me into first-person shooters. This same exact one. I didn't know what they were til this one came along and I'm glad that it did. Talking about one intense experience...I would finish playing with my stomach all tied in knots. It's THAT intense. But, well worth it, believe me.
If you like first-person shooters, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. Definitely worth your hard earned bucks.

I rented this game thinking that it would be really cool. Unfournately, I was kinda dissapointed. The graphics are like a pc shoot 'em up that had come out in 1995...If you want a good shoot em ups, don't get this one...

I love Quake!

First off let me tell you , the graphics are better than the PC version,I should know, like any other Quake or Doom fan, I would spend sleepless nights playing through dungeons killing fiends and Vores to my hearts enjoyment. The framrates slow down slightely when you are in a room with lots of enemies, but not so much as to destroy gameplay. Overall its a pretty Great game.

PS. For all those Christian folk who dont understand why the game has "Demonic" things in it and who find it offensive, let me explain,I too would find it offensive if the game said go to the pentagram and be happy(which it doesnt), the enemies spawn from the Pentragrams, which is why you "avoid" the pentagrams, to sum it all up the reason why the demons are there is for you to kill them, basically you fight a furious battle against evil, if you had the determination and the ability would you just hide things in the corner for the demons to destroy God's creation? I should hope not.

Not at all man.

This game is to dark to see anything and hard to play with the controls provided. I'd recommend upgrading to a different system for this game.
