Fun, Addictive, and Buggy

I bought the game without any reviews or expectations and found a very fun game to play. I put things off just to go and play to open up the next round or difficulty, etc. The four player capability is great when you have friends over and want to race, however, first player is the best experience. Some bugs I've found are the unseen barriers that knock you sideways and the unrealistic physics. Normally gravity accelerates an object down, but not with excitebike. The cycle seems to glide at a constant velocity. You can be grinding against a wall around a turn at 50 mph and not fall off. But, when you bump into a pole at 2 mph, for some reason you go flying off at 10 mph. If you can take advantage of the gliding effect, time your turns right, and avoid the other racers the inaccurate physics aren't a problem. I'm not trying to scare you away from the game; its great fun. If you remember the fun of creating tracks on the original excitebike and them racing them, its twice the fun in 3D. Theres so many things to do in the game unlike most racing games for the N64. The soccer thing is fun, excite 3D is awesome. Some of the tracks are hard and it gets frustrating, but thats what makes it addictive. You have to beat the next round so you can move on and open up new features, its great. I highly reccomend this game.

One of the Best N64 Racing Games

First of all, I would recommend this game to any N64 owner who has been fiending for a good racing game.

This game includes 20 indoor and outdoor levels, 5 or 6 racers, a track editor/creator, a stunt level, and 6 bonus games. Not all of the tracks or bonuses are available from the get go. You start off with 5 tracks and 2 bonus games, and must unlock the rest by playing through the season mode. This is no easy task, since you must learn every single curve and jump of each track, in addition to the skilled computer opponents, in order to place first. This game is highly replayable.

No additional memory pack is needed, since it saves everything you've unlocked to the cartridge; but you only get to save 1 track from the track editor to the cartridge. However, you can save quite a few to a memory pack.

But is this game perfect? No. Maybe I was expecting too much out of this game because of rave reviews, or the near-perfect Wave Race (which is one of the first games to come out for the N64). The control is adequate but slightly stiff, almost sluggish. The track design is very good, but a few tracks have very annoying flaws. Right before the finish line in the Congo level, there is a hut next to the left wall where it is very easy to get stuck right before you finish the race. You can be in first place but over shoot the jump before that spot, get stuck, have to go in reverse, and come in dead last. VERY annoying. One jaded feature is knocking over, or being knocked over by hitting the rear wheel of a bike. Basically, if a character hits the rear wheel with their front wheel, the person hitting the rear wheel will fall over. You can skid in front of the computer and knock him over, but what most commonly happens is that you will be behind the computer and accidentally knock into his rear wheel and fall over. They did not perfect this feature before the game shipped. You can hit the side of the computer no where near their wheel and still fall over. This is so damn annoying that you'll want to throw your controller through your TV. Sometimes the computer will land on top of you head, not knocking you over, then land on top of your wheel, knocking you over. It doesn't really make sense. Some people might not mind the control or the knocking over thing, but I've been spoiled by Microsoft's Motocross Madness for the PC.

Other than that, the game is great. The graphics are great for the N64 especially with the ram expansion pack. The controls, besides being a bit sluggish, are very well though out. The turbo boost, the stunts, the slide turn, the tight turn, and all the combinations of each maneuver give a solid feeling to the game. The physics of the game are pretty realistic; this is NOT a hardcore arcade racer. The tracks, aside from a few of them having a few flaws, are very good. The track editor alone can add hours of game play. The track editor is easy to use and intuitive. The game is hard. Expect to be very frustrated with the game at times, but it's worth it. You'll want to come back to play just to beat a season to unlock the next. Definately a solid 5 star for a N64 game.

When I first got the game i thought that is was terrible. I could barely use the bikes. But I kept playing it because I heard such good things about it. And believe me, once you get used to it you will LOVE it. Graphically it it pretty good. It is nothing revolutionary but it is nice looking. Sound wise it is the best sounding N64 bike racer yet. The control is good. The game is very responsive. At first you might have a little trouble turning but once you go through the "Tutoriol Mode" everything will be solved. There are over 25 courses with over 10 riders and plenty of extra modes including the original Excitebike for NES. That is just one of the great modes in the game.I gave this game a full 5 stars because all the aspects of the game like the sound, graphics, control, and gameplay are all fine. With that alone I woul give it 4 stars, but thanks to the "create a track," and all the great courses and extra playmodes it made this game a MUST BUY. If you are skeptical about this game then rent it but I don't believe that will do you much good considering it takes a while to get used to the game.

Considering there aren't very many motorcycle games on the Nintendo 64, Excitebike is the overall best choice. Of course, being the best doesn't mean its perfect. It's a very challenging game; challenging to the point where its unforgiving. The Expert mode is an absolute pain to conquer and I also found the controls fairly hard to grasp onto. This is one of those games that takes a lot of work to actually "get good" at it. Sure, that's a nice thing, but we can only take so much frustration. Also worth mentioning: the sheer lack of racers to choose from and the grainy graphics. Okay, so this is all small stuff, though, right? Don't get me wrong, Excitebike has plenty of good qualities. The game really is fun to play... once you've got the bike under control. The physics work wonderful. There are many unique tracks to race on, a fine-tuned track editor, and several bonus games. In fact, playing a 4-player round of motorcycle soccer is just about one of the best things you can do with your friends. But with or without friends, Excitebike has a lot to do. It could have been better, yes, but if you have a real hankering for motorcycle racing: look no further. Excitebike delivers the goods.

How's that dirt taste?

I race dirt bikes and really enjoy dirt bike simulation games, but until Excitebike 64 came out I was left unsatisfied. I bought this game and pretty much continuously played it until I finished it, which was no easy task. The controls are easy to master after a little while, but the different difficulties of the track and computer races keeps the game challenging. Has a great diversity of different race modes, including edit your own track, soccer, and hill climb. The game even has a training mode to get the driver used to the controls. I highly recommend this game to anyone.

The graphics are AWESOME and control is good, you just have to get used to it (and that doesn't take long.) In this game (unlike some others) you have to use your brake to win. Yes, the jumping and hitting things isn't very realistic, but it's more arcade than real. The turbo is realistic because when you rev your bike to top speed in real life it of course WILL overheat after a time. There is a limited amount of riders, even though I heard somewhere that there is a hidden rider, but I haven't gotten him yet. This game is not one of those dinky little racing games that are easy to beat, it's challenging, and there are lots of activities to do in the game like hill climb, stunt arena, the original excitebike, desert racing, excite 3D, and my favorite... soccer. And finally it has a secret cheat menu. If you start to have trouble here's a little cheat... at the main menu hold right c, down c, and the "L" button at the same time and then press the "A" button to access the cheat menu, then enter "mower" find out yourself what exactly it does, but it's very helpful. There are other cheats if you want to look them up. I recomend this game STRONGLY!!!

Very good with the Expansion Pack, some weak spots in game.

The game is definitely good for its revitilization from the original NES game made in 1984. But there are some weak spots in the game. Sometimes the braking can be a problem if you don't angle your bike in the right position. The tracks are very good, especially Hi-Res graphics with the Expansion Pack. And when you get to the Gold round in Amateur difficulty, the game starts to lose its fun. The special tracks are excellent, especially the 3D Excitebike track (Which amazed me). I would rent Excitebike 64 first, and then if you like it, then buy it. Very good. An overall 4 stars.

I had a great time playing this game. It does take some practice, since there are skills you need to develop for maximum speed over jumps, bumps, turns, etc. The only thing that made me mad is when I place first in the first season, the game said it unlocked the Soccer level, when I tried to play the Soccer level, it said it was locked! But the Desert level is a blast.

A very good racer, with just a few glitches.

As a big fan of realistic racing games, especially motorcycle games, and of the original 8-bit Excitebike, I just had to give this one a go. I'm glad I did. This is an excellent racer, and while not as fast as some (which adds to the realistic quality), it still takes an extreme amount of skill to retain control of your bike at all times. You play as one of six racers, each with different strengths and weaknesses, and race against the other five through a series of different races. As you progress, you'll unlock various secret levels, including the original 8-bit Excitebike! One tip: BE SURE TO FINISH THE TRAINING MODE. Even if it might seem useless or tedious, believe me you'll be glad you did. Now here's the catch: this great game has several problems which cannot be overlooked. First, the already somewhat difficult-to-master controls sometimes just do not respond, for no reason. Second, your bike can occasionally hit an obstacle that doesn't appear to be there (i.e., going around a corner, you can bump an invisible extension of that corner.). If not for those, I'd have given this 5 stars. Still, these problems are not incredibly frequent, and even with them, this is an extremely fun game to play. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone who likes motocross games, or any realistic racers for that matter.

Excitebike is simply the best motocross game. It's so realistic with its graphics and has some of the best mini games I have ever played. I mean when you can play soccer on dirt bikes you have to try it out. Then they have the Hill Climb, which is a giant hill that you try to ride up. I say try because I'm good at the game and I have only gotten up a couple times. It has a ton of courses with different environmental settings. You could be riding in a blizzard, construction site or make up your own course. One of the best parts is all the tricks it has. I constantly switch people to do my favorite tricks. Overall I'd have to say that Excitebike is a classic Nintendo game brought back and made better than I could ever imagine.
