A Blast to Play

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

Originally reviewed at Last-Gen.com:

Released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64, Rare's Blast Corps is a blast (gasp) to play.

Explosions have an important role in Hollywood because it sells like hotcakes. Terminator 2, Die Hard, Speed, etc. and the list goes on: it just wouldn't be the same. The exact rule applies for video games, and sometimes a cool explosion can make you feel super cool, saying "holy crap, I did that!" Blast Corps is one of those games that keeps you in explosion heaven.

The premise of Blast Corps is pretty simple: clear a pathway for the missile carrier. For some strange reason the carrier is carrying two unstable nuclear warheads that will go off at the slightest touch, and some genius decided that it'd be a good idea to have the thing on auto-pilot. You basically exercise the classic horror film cliché: run as fast as you can from the slow-moving antagonist to stay alive, breaking everything in your path to reach safety. Thankfully, you have powerful vehicles and giant robots in your arsenal of demolition machines.

There are eight vehicles for you to control, and each offer a different type of gameplay. Ramdozer (bulldozer) is the simplest, where you just ram things to destroy them; J-Bomb (giant robot) can fly with its jetpack and fall onto buildings to destroy them (think Mario's butt stomp in Super Mario 64), and six more gameplay styles. The graphics are pretty nice with clean models and colorful explosions. I personally liked the music, surprisingly good considering its genre (what is the genre?). The sound effects are of course good, though the explosions sound kind of cheesy. It is nice that the game has talking characters, I catch myself saying "Time to get moving!" after playing this game for a while, it's very contagious.

Blast Corps is very fun to play alone and with friends taking turns since it doesn't support 2-player. I can also recommend this to younger kids since it's full of Tonka and giant robot goodness without any violence (that's of course if you don't consider explosions `violence'). Overall, a must-have for any Nintendo 64 gamer!

Rare used to make good games

Up until they were bought by microsoft and half their staff left, Rare used to make awesome games. This is one of them. Blast Corps is one of the hardest games I have ever played and yes maybe a little too hard. But, look at it this way, it's been about a decade since it came out and I still have a reason to play it. Getting all platinum medals is probably the most ridiculous task in video game history. This is what I like about Nintendo games, even though you beat it, you didn't really "beat" it, Like goldeneye with all the cheats, or mario kart ds with 3 stars. some of the vehicles are hard to control but that's pretty much the point of the vehicle. On the plus side, if you like a challenge then this is a great game for you. On the down side, you will probably never be able to beat it all the way.

Good, but too difficult at times

Its a good game. It's not that hard until the levels late in the game (i.e. diamond sands) and it is fairly addictive. It is very fun but gets tedious if you get stuck in a harder level. Also, Backlash is rather hard to control even with practice.
HOWEVER: it is worth your time even with the issues with backlash and the harder levels. Most of the game is very creative and decently difficult.

Fun

It's fun to destroy stuff in this game. Blowing up whole towns just doesn't get old. I don't know how successful this game was, but it seems it was underrated. I rented it once and enjoyed it a lot. The only problem I had with it was it got pretty difficult after finishing some of the easier levels, and I don't think there were all that many easy levels.

Nauseating!

I remember burrowing this from a friend because I ran out of N64 games to play so I burrowed this and some other games for a few days. I have to say it was fun at first, than it became frustrating, and than I felt like I was going to throw up because of the weird controls and this and that moving around in weird places which I didn't intended in doing. It was also because I was really young then and I really didn't know what the game was really about, which is puzzle solving sometimes.

I advise not buying the game, instead tell your friend to buy it because its the best game ever and take it from him when he wants to throw it out. Of course you'll lose a friend, but well worth it! Game > Friendship. I'm just playing kids.

Brains, Brains and More Brains ++ NUCLEAR ACTION!

This is one of the smartest and most demanding games you will ever play. It is tetris, but with little men that get into special vehicles that you operate to move objects around a city path to allow a runaway nuclear bomb on a truck a clear path. It is not as easy as it seems, is very addictive and some of the best fun I ever had playing any game. There was nothing quite like. I played this for thinking and Turok for shooting. I remember this impressed quite a few brain friends I had. They loved it. It is quite a thrill also. Tense when you get near the end and the nuclear lorry is right on your tail. Amazing concept. Thanks for these memories and happy times.

great fun breaking stuff!!!!!

When I first saw this game I thought it would be great, Right? WRONG! This game is terribly frustrating. The controls are sloppy, the graphics lack depth and the vehicles are murder to control. The Harbor level was the hardest and most challenging. You have to blast your was across a harbor to prevent the missile carrier and every move has to be PRECISE!. If you make even just one mistake then it will cost you the level and you will have to start over. Tak my advice and DO NOT BUY OR EVEN RENT THIS GAME! The only good part about it is when you rent it and someone has beaten all the levels and you can goof around all you want but even that gets old. FICKEN MIT SIE BLAST CORPS! FICKEN MIT SIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blast Corps is the best N64 game. Period. Sometime you just want to blow things up and Blast Corps helps you do it. For most levels you are a vehicle trying to save a truck filled with nuclear weapons from crashing into any buildings and exploding. You have the options of being a ramdozer, sideswiper, dump truck, very fast cars, trains, missle-shooting racers, J-Bomb, IronFist, a gokart, and a lot more. This game is so much fun! If you like blowing up stuff, then get Blast Corps.

Clean and great to keep forever
