A potentially great game marred by some major flaws

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 10 / 10

This is a game that has a lot of potential. The sexy but deadly heroine is very well done, and is well positioned to build a story/game around. Her fighting style, which consists of two 3-foot blades which can be used simultaneously with a wide range of guns and explosives as well as acrobatic moves, makes for enjoyable and great-looking combat sequences. And there's something sadistically fun about having her jump onto an enemy, wrap her legs around him, and start draining him of blood, or simply gradually dismembering him with the blades. Other highlights include the various vision modes and the brief mid-game sequence where you gain control of a primitive mech.

However, the game has some major flaws that prevent it from living up to its full potential. These include a clichéd storyline (it's definitely not the first game to pit you against Nazis dabbling in the occult), short playtime (I finished in about 10 hours), low replay appeal, and drab environments. The inability to save anywhere other than the beginning of levels was frustrating, especially because on some of the larger levels it's really easy to die just before the completion of the level. Thankfully most of the levels were fairly short.

The biggest problem though is the lack of variety. The number of different enemy types is fairly small, there's little discernable difference between the various guns (other than the special weapons), combat boils down to little more than button-mashing, and there's really no character progression (you can increase your attack levels as you advance, but they make almost no difference to the gameplay). Even with only 10 hours of total game time, playing it started to become tedious.

I'd give this a 3 star rating if not for the fact that it's really cheap now, and it's probably worth playing just to lay the groundwork for the sequel. I played a beta of BloodRayne 2 at E3 last week, and I was quite impressed with it. Terminal Reality seems to have kept the good parts of the original and fixed almost everything else, so I'm looking forward to playing the full game later this year. It would seem that they have a very strong franchise on their hands.

Excellent fun and the price is right!!!!

My only 2 gripes against this game -
1)the graphics are out of date. This game is running on a game engine that is 2 or 3 years old.
2) Again we are fighting NAZIS!!!! Yikes...is this subject beaten to death or what?

That said, this game is unique.
You have to get in close to your enemies to kill them. No sniper rifles, no rocket launchers. You do get guns and once in a while you will come across a German bazooka. These are limited at best WHICH IS GOOD!!! It keeps you focused on what is important...your vampire skills. Your skills advance and grow in power as the game progresses.

You cannot save as you go. You can only save at the end of each level. Yes, this is frustrating, but it makes you try harder than other games. The close ups of her bloodsucking frenzies is a blast, the dialog is actually funny, clever, witty and made me laugh out loud at times.

This game will run nicely on slower computers. The music was actually fun to listen to during gameplay. Try playing it with and without the music for added fun.

Overall, BloodRaybe is not going to blow anybody away like Medal of Honor, Halo, UT 2003....but it is well priced, enjoyable, clever, and the game lasts more than 5 to 7 hours like many of the games out there charging $50!!!!

Loved the Recharge

In this game, you play a half-vampire who recharges her energy by drinking the blood of her enemies. After the first level, she gets a harpoon to draw them to her to feed. That part is really neat. Otherwise, it's your typical FPS. Your character defaults to blades, but can pick up guns and use them for a limited number of shots (you don't find ammunition). You can only save at the beginning of levels, but each level tends to be pretty short.
The game starts pretty slow, but picks up after the first few levels. Check out the breast enhancement cheat for a good laugh.
About the Nazis - Nazis are the perfect enemy for FPS games because (a) they actually existed - the developer doesn't have use any creativity or imagination and (b) everyone agrees that they were the bad guys (except a few nuts out there who we all agree are wrong). In the FPS context, it's not like the plotline really matters much anyway.

Fast paced and lots of fun

This game is extremely enjoyable in its short lived, 7-10 hour, single player campaign.

The guns and blade moves all look terrific, especially her blood lust and slo-mo vision. The game is very gory and some of the slow motion death scenes are so over the top theyll make you laugh.

However, what keeps this game from 5 stars is its repetitive gameplay, 3 settings and each level on the same setting is very similar, and its short gameplay. The game will take you 2-4 days to beat and sadly there isnt much replay value.

But for its cheap price the game cannot be beat in terms of its quick and satisfying play.

Nice graphics and good storyline

Rayne is half vampire and half human with a major attitude. This game is a bit gory, but if you have a pretty decent stomach it shouldn't be a problem. Definitely not a game for younger kids.
The graphics were outstanding and the acrobatic feats that she performs in her bloodrage were supberb. Definitely I am looking forward to playing Bloodrayne 2 which will be out sometime in 2004. If you want a game that has a quick pace and is fun to play...definitely get this game!

This game worth the money

Do you like gothic-horror or anything to do with the occult?
Do you enjoy extreme Violence?
Do you like good plots with original storyline?

Well if those appeal to you, then Bloodrayne is definitely the game to check out. Now I understand that the graphics are a little outdated (even when it came out) but I don't seem to care, they aren't terrible. There are a lot of things you can do in this game weather its acrobatics, shooting guns, sucking blood for health while using them as a human shield or you can slice them apart with blades as long as your arms. Now the theme of killing Nazi's does seem old. Wait a minute....Killing Nazi's can never get old!

I personally loved the storyline and the game (...). Some people say that when bloodrayne is feeding it sounds like she is having "fun". Well what else would it sound like? shes trying to chug lots of blood very fast so she can continue killing and not get hit. Just think about it a little bit.
The only problem that I had was the dialog in the video segments. Like if some one were to say "Rayne, go kill those zombies". It would say "Rayne, go kill tho" and then it would jump to the next part. Now this bugged me for a while but I adapted rather quickly, I just read fast. Now I know I am not the only person with this problem because I took the same game and installed it on a friends computer and it worked fine. A problem that occurred on both of our computers was that during the blood rage, there would be this red line that appears in the middle of the screen on the right side to the center. If anyone knows how to fix these problems please post them on a review. Other then these 2 problems this game was great and is very fun, especially if you are into things like the occult. Definitely recommended for those who enjoy a good story (with violence) and as for those who were not satisfied with the graphics. Bloodrayne 2 is in the works as well as a Bloodrayne movie. Laura Croft can kiss her sorry old a$$ goodbye.

The start of a good one

I got interested in bloodrayne 2 when my friend bought it for his PS2. But with me I'm not into council games so when I found out it was available for PC you could only imagine my delight. One thing led to another and after finishing that I wanted to play the original Bloodrayne but was told it was no longer in print so I decided to try online. The two games are somewhat the same but I found the Originals ending to be a much harder fight and took me several attempts to defeat it.
