The best in Star Wars gaming just got better

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 77 / 89
Date: November 02, 2005
Author: Amazon User

Star Wars Battlefront II (2005.) The second game in the Star Wars Battlefront series.

INTRODUCTION:
In 2004, Star Wars Battlefront was released. Although not wildly popular at its time of release, the game gradually won many gamers over with its awesome gameplay. The deathmatch-style gaming in a galaxy far, far away ended up becoming the best-selling Star Wars game of all time! Still, while it was one of the best Star Wars games ever, it did lack in a few areas, and it left fans yearning for a sequel. One finally arrived in the Fall of 2005! Is it an improvement? Read on for my review of Star Wars Battlefront II.

OVERVIEW:
Star Wars Battlefront II was released in America on November 1, 2005 - the same day Episode III was released on DVD in the United States. The game features single player and multi-man action alike. There are a ton of different characters, classes, locales, and game variants. The game is available for Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, XBOX, and PC.

REVIEW:
I had high expectations for this game, being that the first Battlefront was one of my all-time favorite Star Wars gaming experiences. The sequel takes this already-excellent formula, and makes it even better in a number of ways! Let's see how it fares.

-THE GOOD:

-THE GAMEPLAY THAT MADE THE ORIGINAL BATTLEFRONT SUCH A GREAT GAME MAKES A COMEBACK HERE. The original game was a Star Wars fan favorite, and I'm not at all surprised that the basic gameplay concepts, for the most part, remain unchanged in most modes of play.

-THE STORY MODE HAS GOTTEN A REVAMP. Rather than just generic battles aroun the galaxy, it has become mission and objective-oriented. The alteration makes for a refreshing change of pace from the standard battle games.

-TONS OF NEW LOCATIONS TO TAKE THE FIGHT TO. The locales you'll explore in this game have greatly been expanded. Now, you can fight in a great deal more places than the first game. Episode III worlds like Utapau and Mustafar are now playable, as well as other classic Star Wars scenes like Dagobah and the interior of the Death Star.

-SPACE COMBAT! This is the thing the game is getting a lot of hype for. You can now do your battles in space! The sheer amount of options in such a battle makes these some of the funnest things the game offers. You can fly a starfighter and attack enemy ships from the outside, or land in their docks and cause destruction from the inside out (and maybe even steal an enemy fighter!) This is definitely one of the game's best features.

-JEDI/SITH CHARACTERS NOW PLAYABLE. Such characters were just "extras" on the battle scenes of the first Battlefront, but now they are playable! In your battles, sometimes you'll get an option to play as one if you fulfill certain objectives. Now a whole cast of them is available for play, and it definitely makes your fights more interesting.

-LOTS OF OTHER NEW STUFF. For instance, in some battles, you can earn points by killing foes, and my killing them and getting these points you can choose from other character classes that weren't available at the beginning of the battle. There are also tons of new vehicles, including many that premiered in Episode III.

-GRAPHICS ARE BETTER THAN EVER! If you thought the first Battlefront had great graphics, you haven't seen anything yet. This is about as good as a game of this type could possible look.

-THE BAD:

-THE OBJECTIVE-ORIENTED STORY MODE CAN BE FRUSTRATING. I myself would have preferred it if Story Mode has just kept the standard gameplay styings. However, I am NOT saying that this chance to the gameplay was all bad, it's just not what I was expecting in some ways.

-LEARNING CURVE IS STEEPER THAN MOST STAR WARS GAMES. The Battlefront series was obviously designed with PC gamers in mind father than the console crowd, so these games are a little harder to learn than the other Star Wars titles. Give the game some time before you reject it - you may end up liking it more than any other Star Wars game!

Overall, the sequel to the best-selling Star Wars game of all time is even better than its awesome-in-its-own-right predecessor. If you liked the first Battlefront, you're bound to like the second one even better. I give it my highest possible recommendation if you're a fan of Star Wars. Pick this one up. It may be a little hard to learn if you're new to this sort of thing, but ultimately, you should agree that this game rocks.

EDITION NOTES:
This game is a very recent release at the time I write this review. Accordingly, you really shouldn't have any problem hunting down a copy of it for yourself. Just about every place that sells video games should have plenty of new copies, just waiting to be sold.

My Opinion on Star Wars Battlefront 2 on PSP

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 4

Woot! I'm the first =)

I think the game is pretty fun so far. I've only had it for a day. I bought it on open release day 01NOV05 and it is 02NOV05 today.

The game graphics is really nice in my opinion considering it being on a PSP and sounds effects not to bad but can get redundant, I do not mind at all. Now I am not sure if later in the game you might hear the voices of major characters since this is the first time for me to play the Star Wars Battlefront series and on the PSP at that.

The control for the game for me is a bit hard to grasp, even the easy setting, though I am starting to get use to the Default setting (many failed missions and a lot of patience), so I am starting to enjoy the game more. I think if I were playing this game on a computer the game control would be not as a big deal, but hey! They had to cram all this stuff on a PSP control settings.

Seems to be a lot of space fights so get use to it. I however do not do so well on that battle front, I usually fail that part of the combat =( but again I don't mind at all... Heck! I am fling a X-Wing fighter for goodness sake!

My only complaint is long load times and I don't know if it's just me but the game seems to hang/lock up on me after you get to the final tally screen. I have to take the battery out of my PSP to kill the game so I can again regain control of my PSP, I mean everything is locked up... Power Button, Home Button, etc. Anyone having this problem too?

Would be nice to have some sort load symbol or something during those times so I know the game is loading instead of listening for the game disk to be wiz'n. Don't get me wrong there is a loading screen but only on the start of each game. I'm talking about in the Galactic Conquest mode. Going from conquest to conquest.

If they needed to save some space to increase load times then I would of recommended that the got rid of the tutorials. I think it was a waste of space in my opinion.

Over all... I really like this game. I love playing all the things i grew up with on the big screen, the X-Wing fighter, playing as a jedi, and so much more.

Well, that's my two cent worth... May the force be with you!

Frustrating but fun (when it works)

Let me preface this by saying that I'm a freak for the original BattleFront and plan on buying the PS2 version of this one as well as the PSP version I own. That being said...

As noted in other reviews, the controls take a loooooong time to master; gamers used to the original game on PS2 will be most comfortable with the default layout, but it still takes a while to get used to the buttons being the movement control.

The graphics are pretty good, considering this is a portable unit, and the music is fantastic (gotta love the old John Williams, eh?). Many of the maps will be familiar from the first game, although not all areas are present in all maps, so be prepared to not have your favorite sniper nest to hide away in.

I haven't had the chance yet to link up a networked game, but I'm still having fun acing Gungans and Ewoks as the Imperial Enforcer. You'll also have a blast taking over the Jedi characters, using the Force to knock enemies over or choke them silly before taking the 'saber to 'em.

The biggest complaint I have has been mentioned in other reviews: the game freezes between missions and especially gets annoying when you try to save games. Since characters and maps are unlocked as you progress through missions, it becomes a hair-pulling experience when you finally beat a mission you've been working on for four hours only to have the PSP freeze up so bad you have to remove the battery.

Sony: If you read this review, I'm loving the game but hating the glitches. Fix the bugs and offer the first-round buyers an even-up exchange for the patched version through a UMD swap!

For everyone out there, I recommend picking the game up for a console or PC, but hold off on the PSP version for a while until these bugs get fixed.

An Excellent Game

Finally, a great TPS/FPS for PSP! The graphics are amazing, of course, but the game play is first-rate, and the controls are excellent, even if they are not as customizable as some folks might have liked. If you haven't played "Battle Front", it will take some getting used to. The space combat will take getting used to even if you have played "Battle Front".

It has an incredible number of options in the way the game can be played. I found the "Basic" control scheme easiest to use. Totally Awesome.

O.K. but where is the things we loved from the first one?

this game wasn't as good "fun" wise as the first one of the battlefront in my opinion. The classic little things were left out, such as; when you are waiting to load it has the illusion of taking longer because the planet loading thing where you zoom in isn't there, and there are a lot of modes, but not too many match the simple kill every one and/or capture all the posts. The things i did like about the game were little "upgrades to the old one, such as; space, characters, jedi, etc. that the maketers can't seem to get off of. Overall this game was the same or worse than the first one. Now, the PSP verson of this was horrible. I don't know what the other reviewer were thinking of, but i really compared the graphics with the old one and the PS2 version and, in lack of better word, they absolutly sucked. the controls for this are really hard to grasp and the optioin of having the shoot button being R1 is totally lost. instead you have to resort to the lame X and square. to make matters work, i have agreed with one reviewer who said that they system would freeze up. It really happens and you can't do anything about it until you take the battery out.(do this can be very bad for you system). to rap it all up, Unlike the PS2 versionl. when you do instant action, you can't every become special characters such as jedi and Hon Solo, because you can't access even 40% of the levels available until you do some stupid code of complete 83 different story things, which I might add that between the hard controls and difficult objectives(the other thing that bugs me), you never get anywhere in the game. this review may sound like i am totally trashing the game and the PSP, but it is the true. I personally own the first battlefront and i love it over all the other games out there (even the popular halo). I counted the HOURS from oct. 1st till this game came out and all in all, I was very upset with their work. the only big improvement of the PS2 system was graphics. and the PSP failed to even match the first battlefront.
this was my review hoped it helped a little bit on you way of buy new stuff on amazon

Really fun game

this is an awesome game, and there are a lot of pros and cons:

Pros:
-Gameplay is awesome, and you dont want to put it down
-Graphics are so good that they look like a console game
-Galactic conquest is as fun as ever. It's not too hard, but its not a breeze either. You can chose 4 armies: The droids, the old republic, the rebels, and the new republic. All armies have their pros and cons (my favorites are the droids) but it is fun no matter who you chose.

Cons:
-I was extremely dissipointed in the challenges mode. It's simply not fun. It is so simple that I felt like i was playing a gameboy color game.
-playable heroes are extremely overrated. All non jedi are just plain horrible, and although jedi aren't that bad, after i messed around with them a little bit, i decided that i would much rather be a basic droid

Overview:
This game is worth buying for sure(even if only for galactic conquest). I own nine games for psp, and this is my second favorite (behind madden 2006). Star Wars Battlefront is a great game and i strongly reccomend buying it.

Star Wars Battlefront lacks the certain features a gamer will
appreciate. For instance, the controls. If you are running
around trying to complete a mission, you don't have time to
play around with the triangle, square, circle, and X buttons.
It's just annoying! Why couldn't it have target lock and
analog stick control? The only reason mosy people say it's
a great game is because they don't want to admit that their
$50 went down the drain! Sure,it's got it's ups(like good
graphics,neat weapon selection,and dark side/good side choice).
If you want a good shoot-em-up game,I would strongly
recommend Grand Theft Auto(Liberty City Stories). Also, a
very good game that recently came out about 2,3 weeks ago(God
Forbid!) is SSX On Tour-only if you like snowboarding.

It's really a good game, the second best game for psp by a long shot (gta was really good too). I'll the titles out for psp have been crap, this and gta are really good games though, battlefront 2 is really great, it's just what you would expect.
Although when people say there are long loading times, i'd have to agree but i read the tips and hints that are displayed while it's loading. My game hasn't froze yet and I've owned this game for over a week. What's up with all the knocking the controls, their fine, plus you get 5 different choices of control settings. The graphics are good, the difficulty's o.k ( could've of made a harder mode). You can play with every character from the first one and I truly enjoy this game and I think that you should go buy it right now, like just go, it's worth it and a very game so go and buy it a.s.a.p.
