I'm giving it 5 stars beause when I played it in high school a decade ago, I was totally addicted. It was the first PC game I ever played and now I'm strictly PC-gamer.
WOLF 3D now is a total trip down memory lane. I'm not sure it's a 'must have' of any FPS gamer, but I'm glad I have it just for the nostaglia factor. That's why I bought it, but I still play it. It's definitely good for a few laughs. It's amazing how far we've come in just 10+ years.
Also, it's works. I threw it on my laptop that runs WinME and I haven't had any problems. Whenever I'm on a train and don't feel like working, writing letters or playing solitaire, I'm glad I have WOLF 3D just to kill time.
If you're a die hard fan, lay down 10 bucks and own the original FPS. If you're not or can't take the old-school gameplay, then I don't think you'll miss not having this in your collection.
The classic that started it all

This is for me and many of us old cogers in the gaming world the very first, first person shooter that we have played. PRedating Medal of Honor, Golden Eye, Quake and Doom this is the one that started it all.
You start of in a Nazi Prisoner of War castle. So for the most part you stay inside. You get 4 weapons. These are the Knife, Pistol, Machine Gun (or classic uzi) and the chaingun. You face variouse forms of Nazis, and Dogs. You also have to get keys, and find treasure for bonus points.
In chapter one you are escaping. You start off on the top level and have to work your way down. In the end you face a heavily armored Nazi with a chaingun.
In chapter 2 you are sneaking into a Nazi castle where they are experimenting on poor men. Your mission is to take out the mad scientist. When you eventually face him his attacks are throwing scapels at you with good accuracy.
Chapter 3 is by far the best, take out Adolf Hitler. A very dificult task indeed as he comes equiped with heavy armor and twin chainguns.
From there on you continue the 6 chapters until you beat the most cruel General of all equiped with a rocket launcher.
This game really pushes your degree of patience and difficulty. the challenge grows, bosses get harder, and overall you just have fun. THis is highly recomended to anyone out there who want to relive the glory days of the gaming world (before we had thousands of clones).
Take a trip in the time Machine

Well, since this game is old, the graphics are Mud. But don't be turned away from this masterpiece just because of the graphics. It is a classic first person shooter (I think the very first one), and very fun. I really like it on GBA but now that I have my laptop its even better.
I have a problem with the rating of this game though, it's not even bad at all. An M-rated game would be Half-Life, not this. The blood is pixelated and unrealistic, and the game isn't even as bad as Doom. This game should be Teen, unless you are offended by Nazis or Pictures of Hitler/Nazi Parapheneilia on the wall.
You must play this if you like FPS's at all or would like to know their origin.
Better recognize.

Chris, or user "iamtheman_", who wrote the "I'm SO ANGRY at Wolf3D" diatribe is missing the point.
This game was so. Incredibly. Frieking. Awesome. ...when it came out..yea, what? 15 years ago? I remember playing this on a 486. It was revolutionary. So it doesn't use DirectX inputs. Do you scream at black and white movies, too?
And it says right there, on the flipping description that it won't run on XP. So...whose fault is it that it doesn't work on your XP machine, d00d? Seriously.
I think a fair review of this game would have to take into account that playing PC games that are 15 years old isn't something you do because you want a cheap game--it's something you do because you appreciate the genre.
WOW!!! AMAAZING!! UNBELIEVEABLE!! 3-D!!

Wolfenstein 3-D truly raises the bar for the generation of 3-D first person shooters, it's the best game in the world! Graphically, it'lll blow you away. It features up to a mind boddling amount of 256 colors, can you believe it???!!!?!?!?!?!? 256 colors!!! NOW THAT IS A LOT!!! THAT IS INCREDIBLE!!!! YOU WILL SCREAM WHEN YOU SEE THIS GRAPHICS, AND POSSIBLY FAINT!!! Also, all rooms are joined together within' 90 degreees!!!! Can you believe it? 90! Not 10, not 5, not 50, not 30, not 60, 90!!! With each one having a different texture, at times! And also, it features certain 3-D objects! With realistic intense gorry and visual effects, professionaly composed music, sound blasting sound effects, and over 6 missions of blowing up nazis, evil scientists, mutated dogs, and more! This is by far the most impressive first person shooter to exist on the planet earth! And it requires a musucular 286 processor with 640 kilobytes of ram, with MS-DOS, version 5.0. WOW. On my 386 processor with 2 megabytes of ram, the game is amazing. My dad just upgraded to a 486 processor with 4 megabytes of ram, and recently upgraded to 8 MEGABYTES OF RAM!! And it loads the game within guess how many seconds? 8!!! Isn't that fast? And this game is only possibly powered elsewhere by a game boy system......I strongly suggest this game for the tech-geeks around....
A classic, but I need to set some facts straight...

This is a great game to be frank, it was a great nostalgic trip, to when I first played this game at age 5. And the compositional score is quite excellent, and absolutely a marvelous listen. And believe me, it is worth playing it in all its past glory. But the fact I have to set straight is that Wolfenstein might have been the very first 1st Person Shooter, but Ultima Underworld, which came out in the very same year (and I believe a little earlier) introduced 1st person battle-rpg. And to be frank, was in every way superior. There was a storyline behind it, rich cinematics, a great deal of items, and creatures, and quests, etc. The graphics were of a much higher resolution, and there were 3 styles of attack for each weapon as well, depending on how you moved you mouse (at that time, and absolutely miraculous technology). More importantly it was truly 3D, allowing movement on the x, y, and z axis's. While Wolfenstein 3D only allowed x and y movement. All in all, get Wolf 3D, it was important to the gaming industry, and is enjoyable, but if you can also get your hands on Ultima Underworld, most definitely do so, and enjoy a true piece of revolutionary code, and a truly original and marvelous concept. You're sure to enjoy it if you are a true gamer, and if you're not, you still probably will.

This is the first computer game played by my son and myself. He was in Jurior high at the time. Just when they started coming out with how these games was harming our kids. They see more gore and death on TV. But the dogs part(shooting dogs), we've never have liked. But even at the jurior high level(duh) he knew that this was a game not really life . Big deal if the graphic isn't like todays standard. It is a fun old school game so you'll have to get the newer games for whats in the newer games.
ONE of the first 3D games-not to mention the First FPS game.

Wolfenstein 3D should be a well known games-should actually be more known than 007 Goldeneye 64,Should be more known than HALO-as its one of if not THE 1st First Person Shooter. The graphics are quite lame-but hey the 3D age had only just begun when this game came out!The music is what you would get in any game.
My brother used to have the original PC game that i played only once,But i later played the GBA port for like 10 minutes. But now i am getting "Return to Castle WOLFENSTEIN" on my XBox,though i do have a PS2 and GameCube-as the PS2 port is said to be horsekrap, and it ain`t out on GC-Plus the XBox version(which is also a port,it comes from the PC) is a great game PLUS has the original "Wolfenstein 3D" game inside after you beat it so i will manage to retain the classic game once and 4 all.
I am not as huge as FPS fan since GoldenEye as "Stealth" is my new faverite but i still play FPS games as 2nd faverite and am waiting for an XBox to arrive so i will be able to get a bathful of FPS games like HALO,Far Cry,Half Life,DOOM III and so on!
PS2 does not have any interesting FPS games,it has a couple but not many,i hate BLACK its just a Far Cry-wanna be-but falls flat on its face.
But anyways byebyebyebye now.
a gamers masterpiece

this game was very much worth my time and money. the first three episodes would be worth buying by themselves. the moments in which you escape castle wolfenstein, destroy hitler, and murder the angel of death, are some of the most memorable moments in gaming history.
you start off having just killed your gaurd in a nazi prison/castle, after ten levels of intense fighting and excitement, and after defeating hans grosse (the giant duel chaingun wielding nazi), you run outside and see the light of day, the green of a feild, and blue sky, for the first time. the game actually makes you feel like you are experiencing this. not to mention capturing the feeling with a cool video. the majestic relief and feeling of accomplishment in seeing outdoors (knowing you have finally escaped after seeing nothing but windowless brick, wood, and death) is unbeleivable.
later in the game you go after hitler himself, i will not go into description but let you see for yourself, needless to say it is quite the moment when you bring him down.
after this the missions, while still fun don't get me wrong, become no longer building like, but extremely maze like. therefore losing the effect that you are actually in a german base during WW II. the first thirty missions (three episodes) keep this up very well. the last thirty do not, but are still fun.
however, while i thought the peak of the game had come and gone with killing hitler at the end of episode 3, there was something much greater still in store: after beating the final three episodes, which were an entertaining slide down from that peak, i discovered that the "spear of destiny" game is on there as well. 20 more levels(roughly, there may be more) on a quest for the spear, involving some new animations, enviroments, and items coming to the final climax of going to hell (i think, or that's what it looks like anyway), hearing some deep voice say "do your worst human!", turning around to see the angel of death (i figured it was satan), and destroying it!!! AMAZING. after that is a wonderful post game text and still image wrap-up that leaves you feeling like you conquered the world. this game allows you to go back in time and destroy a big chunk of the evils you have been told about since child hood! BUY THIS GAME!!!
p.s. the graphics are definately not the best, cutting edge for the time though, you have to remember that this game came out in '92. they are completely acceptable though, and after getting used to them they hold kind of a sentimental value in retrospect. game contains plenty of action dispersed throughout roughly 80 levels!

I would rather eat my own poop then to pay money for this game. It doesn't work with windows XP, no music, and half the sound effects are missing. If it's not in drive D it won't run at all. Also if you have a usb controller, guess what? You can't use it. That's right. Don't buy it, it doesn't matter if it's 20 cents... don't waste your money, try to bum a nickel off of someone, go to a cashier, get a quarter for your two dimes and a nickel, and buy a gum ball instead. You'll be more satisfied.
