Good game but aspects that made the first game a step above the rest have been removed

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 5 / 6

If you played and liked the first one that dosnt meen that you will like this one. What made the first one stick out to me was the fantastic creature handling the game allowed. The second one removed alot of the creature things that made it so appealing in the first place. For instants the big creature battles you coold zoom in on and tell your creature what to do exactly. Besides things like that being removed the game feels like another plain RTS like all the rest. Thats why I didnt really warm to this sequal like I did the first one. The first one was made longer ago but the execution was far better than the second. They left the guide lines from the first one behind. Overall I was dissapointed with Lion Head for this but if you like RTS's with a few neat little perks then you will probably like this.

Requirements inaccurate

Just a warning: The requirements listed on the box are not accurate. You'll need to have a significantly faster computer than is stated to play the game at more than 10 frames per second.

Repetitive, boring

The overall impression is that of a game made on the rush.
Assuming the "good" alignment, you win simply by building expensive buildings at the edge of your influence zone and burning the enemy's platoons sent by a very unintelligent AI. Since winning requires no strategy, the game isn't challenging; you can do basically the same on all levels.

The races against which one fights are pretty much the same except for their "skins" and the building's aspect. Defeating them all takes you at most 8 hours of gameplay.

Unlike the previous version of B&W, there are no custom campaigns nor multiplayer features. Cinematics and creature apart, it looks like a very primitive first version of "Age of Empires".

Not Black and White 1: Not even close.

Although I didn't play it much, I really did enjoy the first game. And this is not that game at all. The graphics have been slightly improved, but have created a much worse problem than bad graphics: horrible frame rate. The game lagged, and I am running it on a AMD 64 dual core with 1 GB of RAM and a 256 MB graphics card. The frame rate was bad enough to make the game significantly less fun. It also doesn't let you fool around nearly as much as the first game did, and from the moment you begin, you'll be bombarded with boring, repetitive tutorials. But that's just the beginning. Even without regards to the first game, Black and White: 2, is, simply put, a disappointment.

An Average Game...

Black and White had some great innovations that really set the bar for Lionhead. Black and White II has changed the paradigm, for better or worse.
My biggest complaint is the lack of multiplayer. A game like Black and white has such huge potential for fun, exciting multiplayer yet it is strangely lacking, despite the fact that the first game supported it. They must have gotten lazy.
Another mixed blessing is the gameplay changes. The creature is far less important, which some gamers will love. You won't need to micromanage him...and if you want to wholesale ignore him it won't much matter. Gamers who enjoyed that aspect will be dissapointed.
They have released a patch that enables you to skip the tutorial parts of the game, but that really should have been included in release...the most annoying part of black and white I was the stupid "this is how to move your mouse" section that you had to endure every new game.
Overall, Black and White 2 fails to really deliver. However, it still is an average game, but don't expect it to wow you at the same level as the first one.

perfect example of the dark path of RTS graphics over gaming.

black and white 2 has a lot going for it.. fairly unique ideas (at least more unique than the rest of the crap the gaming industry is putting out, though probably not as unique as, say, katamari damacy), a great sense of humor, wonderful graphics..

uh oh, what are we missing here? OH YEAH! great controls and gameplay! two of the most important things in a game! oops! see, black & white 2 is a very "3d" game, and while this looks great, unfortunately it makes it a huge pain to move around between the 10 million camera views. now, other games have been 3d and have been easy to move around in with a default camera view, such as dawn of war. but you won't find that here. here, instead of moving to the sides of the screen to scroll view (DUH, every game has this feature, it's the most obviously easy way to get around an RTS game for years and years), you have to right click and then scroll the screen up, down, left or right. annoying! if you want to click a villager, good luck because with 10 million camera views and depths to choose from, all in 3d, it's hard to target your hand on to the villager.

it's not that i hate this game.. if it had a more simplified camera and controls, i'd probably like it a lot. but i'm not going to spend all my time & energy in a game trying to get to the right camera depth so i can see what's going on and trying to grab things. heck, it makes me want to go grab some console game, where i don't have to deal with this annoying crap.

Great Fun with some kinks,

I just bought this game and after getting a card that supported pixel shading ( you can find cheap ones for around 90$)it worked perfectly on my... old windows xp. Basically in this game you are a god summoned by the Greeks to help them, or if your bad enslave them. The best thing in this game is by FAR the graphics. Simply amazing water effects and such as is to be expected from a black and white game. The many bugs that came with the out of the box game are quickly adressed with the first patch. Another nifty feature is your creature, he changes just as you change and unlike in the first game you are no longer the irritated mother of an overly large, retarted animal. Simple gauges and such let you teach the creature this time around giving you more time for the actual game. There are 4 peoples/tribes to be conquered/ enticed, the Greeks (you), the Japanese, The norse, and the Egyptians. Your main enemy are the Atztecs. Why? because they are war like. You would think being evil would make them like you but it doesnt so whatever. The few major draw back of this game was the resource gathering. Its long and its tiring. once you have a big enough population of people you have to worry less about it but then ore becomes the major issue, so basically there will be resource gathering no matter what. The major FUN element i think is the ability to manipulate objects, for instance you can create rock slides in valleys to thin enemy numbers or put flaming trees in their path to at least stop them for a little while, or if your TRULY evil you can throw flaming people at them, the possibilities are simply endless. AND the game has an ENORMOUS amount of replayability, if you were bad you can be good or vice versa or you can pick a different creature OR my favorite part, there are great mod sites out there for the game and some sites have instructions on how to install the mod. Or if your talented (unlike me) Lion head released a modding tool to make your own. For intsance i turned my entire army into a bunch of flesh eating rabbits... It just doesnt get better than that ( or for you normal people you can get skeleton armies and such). So to wrap it up, basically this game is fun for people who have IMAGINATION or maybe just want to try something new. It has massive amounts of replayability and has beautiful graphics. I recommend it to all who have wanted the chance to be able to feed random people to a giant demonic lion after your fire ball miracle missed the enemy town.

Do not buy this game until they solve installation problem

I bought this game about 2 weeks ago. I've tried everything I could to just install this game and.............. failed miserably... :(
I looked up the help manual they provided with the game box and also went to EA website and Lionhead website to try to fix this problem, but they didn't even have this problem on their support website. I tried to download video, sound, CD-ROM, and motherboard drivers and checked all my hard drives which took almost 4 days!! :(
and~~ closed all my background programs.... But!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still having problem...

My system is celeron 2.93 G with Asus motherboard + 768 ram + windows XP service pack 2 + Geforce FX 5500 256 mb + sound blaster live 5.1 + 350 W power

What pisses me off is I just upgraded my system to play this XXXX game... :(

This is what I have when I try to install.

The graphics are outstanding but in reading the forums you do need an outstanding computer set-up to enjoy...my ran beautifully graphic-wise on a 6800 GT video card.

But....I could only play thru the 4th level, the ever-constant clicking on things, trying to move around and resource gathering, troop building made it sooooo tedious I had to uninstall it rather than waste my precious free time.

The first BW was much better.

I bought this game the day it came it while I was waiting for City of Villains. I was expecting it to be really awesome. Yes the graphics are more intense but that's mainly it. There's tons of bugs not even the patch fixes all of it. The AI will taunt you with the same lines until you conquer him or win him over. In the last mission my influence ring would not expand beyond my walls so I was stuck without soldiers, barely any walls, and barely able to survive the first waves. I eventually gave up and uninstalled the game.
