Best Strategy Game of All Time!!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

I am a big fan of Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Ran). I have also read Shogun by Clavell as well as Musashi and Taiko by Yoshikawa. I even play the board game by Avalon Hill - Samurai Sword, previously known as Shogun (check it out on this site). Of course, this is one of the period that the PC game Shogun: Total War Warlord Ed. is dealing with - 16th Century Japan. It also deals with the Mongol Invasions of Kublai Khan. I have been playing it for several nights now and I can honestly say that my wife is getting just a bit ticked off with me because this is all I want to do when I get home - play this game! It's highly addictice if you get around all the game controls, but not in a Diabo II (mindless RPG) sort of way. It is addictive because it really sets up the atmosphere of 16th century Japan beautifully - from the basic military units, the special units (emissary, ninja, geisha, priest), to the music - kodo drums and all!

The best, of the best!

Holy, When I first purchesed this game, it was the best game on the planet. The realistic time phrases is sweet, and it's sure as heck educational. You can actully see the whole surrounding in battle mode and it even has weather conditions. This game is far more realisticly, and adictively superior to age of empires or civilization 3. Unlike other RTS games, it actully uses tactics, and strategy, with terrain, and everything! This is the best game on earth!

You've spent hours building a massive army...
You've finally forced the A.I. into a descisive battle...

Your calavry is set to out flank the enemy Archers...
Your spearmen are set to take the charge of the enemy horsemen..
Your bowmen have taken the high ground, ready to rain death on your foe...
Crash.....

This game is RIDDLED with random crashes. Go to fight a battle..crash..go to save a game..crash..go to load a game..crash..

Even after patching it, it crashes more often then the stock market.

Dont buy it. It makes me a little unsure of buying Medevial total war if they left this product so under supported.

the best strategy game ever!!

You won't believe the different add-ons this game supplies compared to the first edition. From little differences to big differences. Some you notice right away, others may take awhile. Great, especially if you are a fan of the first edition of Shogun.

This is worth every penny

If you thought the original Shogun was as good as gaming got, welcome to the Warlord's version of medieval Japan. The expansions have truly done Shogun justice. If you were sick of starting out with the same Japan before, you now have four different time periods to choose from, as well as the Mongol scenario. New units are the battlefield ninja, the kensai warrior, the crossbow ashinguru (only in the Mongol scenario!)and the naginato cavalry. A big plus is that the buildings are cheaper to build and go up much quickly--no more 16-season citadels! The rebels are slightly more aggressive. Hojo isn't the Big Bad anymore. In many of the scenarios I've played, this clan gets bumped off early. The emassaries are much more useful now. They not only can propose more effective alliances, but can bribe other units! Ports now appear visible on the map so you know which clans have sea power or not. This is pivotal, because you can send a spy, shinobae, or ninja into someone's port and then invade next turn. As far as the tactical goes, I never had a problem with it before, since I'm not that good at the tactical part anyhow--so I have no complaints. If anything the graphics are more colorful and improved. As for the Mongol scenario, it was kind of disappointing for me. If you play the Mongols, it will be easy to win, even on hard level. If you play Hojo, prepare to get b***h slapped across the country. I would have liked to have seen the Mongols get integrated into the regular game and get made as part of a clan choice. Still, y
u can't have everything, can you?

An Atmospheric Classic

Shogun is one of those games that would never exist in today's world of high-money publishers going with the same-old-game over and over again. It truly broke the mold of strategy games when it came out. Since then, its ideas have been copied in many different locations, and the maker (Creative Assembly) have gone on to do two more games and four expansions.

Despite the lack of cutting-edge graphics, the atmosphere in Shogun is truly immersive. Steven Turnbull, a professor and expert on the Sengoku Jidai period in Japan, was CA's main advisor as they developed this game. And Steven's attention to accurate detail shows through, from the brilliant battle music, to the lamp-lit cutscene movies, to the authentic names and costumes.

An excellent all-round effort, well worth checking out even eight years after release.

A True Classic....

Even though this game is now outdated, for it's day there were no contenders. This a true classic in every sense. If you're still running and old pc that can't handle the later titles in the series I would definitely recommend it.

* The opening cinnemactic is from the movie RAN directed by Akira Kurosawa.

At first I was impressed with this sorry excuse for a game, but after playing it for a week, I win every time when I play against the computer. But really what is the worst is that the AI of the game [stink]. It just is worthless. So in a...attempt to make it more challenging, it cheats. You ever charge 3 heavy calvary with 60 of your heavy calvary only to be beaten because the 3 heavy calvary you attacked just happened to have their daimyo? Come on, how stupid is that? There are a million bugs the game uses to get an advantage, which is a real shame, because the frustration it builds just does not make the game worth it. It is also a joy to get your troops stuck on the side of a mountain and it is just impossible to manuerver them anymore. Never has a game had such potential just to [stink].
