NOLF is one of the smartest and funnest games ever!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

I've got a Pentium 400 with 196mb RAM and a ... standard video card but this game performs smoothly and keeps you riveted. It will have you laughing out loud and rooting for the ol'gal to do well. It's unique for a number of reasons, not the least of which, the main character is a witty, sophisticated, and successful woman. Unlike Laura Croft, Agent Archer will earn your respect! It's also allows you to develop skills based on your performance so each player should be a little different. Buy this game! It's great!

Groovy!

I ordered this game after completing NOLF2, so I'm kinda going backwards here. I enjoyed the sequal so much, I just had to get the first one as well. I was impressed by the low price, but I had no idea what I would get for it. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box: not only was there a Prima Official Strategy Guide inside, but a NOLF soundtrack CD as well! How is that for a deal?! Of course, then I installed the game, and the game is great as well. I just love Cate Archer; I'm so sick of James Bond that a female spy is more than welcome. The levels are very interesting (a lot of it in the beginning is training), so far my favorite (which is actually quite difficult) is the level where Cate jumps out of a plane without a parachute and must eliminate the shooting enemies falling with her, all the while trying to reach the man below her who DOES have a parachute, then take it. I'd say this level is equivelent with the Ohio level in the sequel. The graphics are great, and the game is very colorful - after all, it does take place in the groovy 60s. If you haven't played this game yet, and are a FPS fan, you've got to get this game. Even when you aren't spying or killing, you are still entertained by the conversations of the surrounding people. So if you want a great deal on a great game, get this one now. You will not be disappointed.

Better than Half-Life

I love playing games when i know that the developer put all their effort, heart, and inspiration into it to make it worthy of your hard earned cash. NOLF is just positively the most amusing, and more importantly, entertaining FPS ever made. There, i said it, No One Lives Forever is better than Half-Life. I surmise that ever since Half-life, the gaming journalists have felt hesitant in revising their opinions as to it's BEST GAME EVER MADE title. Their stubborn resolve and insipidness doesn't allow them to undermine their credibility in the gaming community; thus, rather than sounding like a heretic, each respective gaming site has stuck to their guns, and the rest of the public has bought into it. Granted, Half-Life was a revolutionary, story driven game.... at the time; but better and superior games will inevitably be released. And it has, in NOLF. After years of bringing out the [...] games to grace a PC screen (Blood 1&2, Shogo, Claw, Sanity... i'll stop there) Monolith has somehow created the funniest and enjoyable game i've ever played. No, the Lithtech 2.0 engine isn't as impressive as Quake3 or Unreal Tournament, but it doesn't need to be. It still manages to look as slick and polished as both of those. GET THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

No One Lives Forever - A Game That Definitely Lives Forever

No One Lives Forever - This game blew me away. It not only had fun gameplay, sound effects, music, and graphics; it had the stylish "Austin Powers" meets "James Bond" story that was well deserving of an applause. The story is serious and well scripted, the artificial intelligence of the game is well beyond belief. If your character accidently makes a noise in a certain corner or runs with loud pounding of her footsteps, the enemy will begin to wonder where the noise came from and start searching for the heroine. The game is quite comical in some of the character designs and in almost all of the conversations by guards or civilian bystanders. The weapons and gadgets are too much in quality and quantity to even begin to list. I do however, remember the perfume sleep-gas bottle that Agent Archer will spray at guards to knock them into deep sleep temporarily. Some scenes in this game really caught my attention. Certain scenes were beautifully though up - such as jumping out of a plane without a parachute while shooting out parachuting guards in absolute freefall and timing the seconds just enough to catch the last guard and steal his parachute. Other action sequences throughout the game that seperated this game from other games included - riding a motorcycle "Mission Impossible 2" style while dodging bullets and running over henchmen and a "James Bond" type deep sea scuba dive for a ship's manifest and captain's log all while your heroine battles scuba-diving enemies and outswims Great White Sharks. This game is a must buy!

Great game! Lots of plot and character personality. Gameplay is smooth and fun. Open ended enough to get lost but not forever. It's Deus Ex with estrogen.

Best Game Ever!

If there is one game you must buy, it's No One Lives Forever: Game of the Year edition, and NOLF 2. I highly recommend purchasing this game before they are sold out. The story line is easy to follow, the cut scenes are fun to watch, and the sniping or blowing everything in sight is more than one can handle. Cate Archer is the epitome of all spies. She is just as good as James Bond himself, if not better. You get to control her every move. You get to watch her climb rooftops and scour back alleys to pick off any H.A.R.M. agents. Her weaponry ranges from handguns with silencers to shotguns, hairpins that unlock to hand grenades to toss. You can use 1st person or 3rd person. You become the agent herself, and is put through a series of tasks. Just make sure you're the shooter and not the being shot at!

My favorite shooter of all time

Don't let the girl on the cover sway you, this is well worth its money.

Besides being an absolute fun shooter, it's also full of hilarious conversations and phrases.

The missions will keep you going for some time, and when you finally beat it (WITHOUT CHEATS!), you can go online and show what you've got. Join a clan and get your rank up!

One word of advice, when you go online and think you know it all, think again. These guys online know exactly how to beat your sorry butt in about 3 seconds. You will learn the tricks and secrets soon enough young grasshopper. :-)

Complete waste of money

Tested on 1GHz P3 with 256Mb RAM and ATI Rage 128 running Windows 2000 Pro, DirectX 8.1, latest video drivers from ATI.

I got the demo from PC Gamer magazine and had a lot of fun with it. I noticed the price of the full game was [the right amount of money] so decided to buy it. What a waste!

The same installs with no errors. However, when I try to run it all I get is an hourglass for a few seconds then nothing. When I run TaskManager I can see nolf.exe in the process list but there is no corresponding window.

Fox Interactive's idea of techinical support is a peer-to-peer discussion forum. There is no way to get any support from the company. Reading the discussion forum gives you an idea of the huge number of problems this game has. ...

Great graphics, average plot, idiotic dialogue

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 6

The graphics are superb, and for a while the game is intense and fun. It quickly becomes repetitive, however, as the enemy casually throws one soldier after another at you from a bottomless supply of thick-skulled morons. Sierra hires fine computer programmers, but must also allow them to write the dialogue rather than hire anyone with an ear for the language. The dialogue is straight from a comic book, and not a very clever comic book. The supposedly flirty conversations between Cate Archer and her bloated partner are particularly stale and stiff. Yes, this is a game, not a movie, but still, the dialogue didn't have to be so imbecilic.
