An unaging classic worth the discount price

It is hard to believe that you can pick this game up so inexpensively now. Look, I love strategy games. Civilization is the Daddy of Strategy. End of Story. Now, some people will tell you that Civ 2 just doesn't capture the same feeling as the first version. Maybe, but I have still logged hundreds of hours (sounds pathetic when I put it like that!) on Civ2 and still dust it off at least once a year to play it one more time. The only other game I can say that about is Master of Orion 2.

If you like strategy games, you have to try this one. End of story.

It was so addictive and awesome, I had to give it away

I LOVE this game. I could play it for months and I don't play too many computer games. This game, however, challenges in ways that other games do not and continually forces you to adapt your strategy. It is pretty realistic (although much more so at the earlier levels than the more advanced ones since the computer cheats so much more on the upper levels). It offers you countless numbers of different scenarios to play on. One word though, your success in any given game is greatly influenced by the peice of terrain you are assigned to.

There are some bugs...the world isn't really round, you have to personnally escort ships over some parts of the ocean or else they will take off in the opposite direction; sometimes planes move at the start of turns when you don't want them to, which results in your plane running out of gas and your losing it; and a few other minor ones. But all in all it is pretty well engineered.

Warning: It is totally addictive and once you start playing it is hard to stop. I gave mine away so that I could get some actual work done!

Better than Civ3

Yes!! Civilization 3 is an incredible game. I rate this game for anyonoe who loves empire-building, conquest, and strategy. I am not surprised that civ2 got a much higher rating then civ3. This game is much faster than civilization 3 since, the most of the graphics are 2D. There are actually scenarios that you can play and I also have multiplayer gold edition which is awesome since you can save in the middle of your multiplayer. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!

Favorite game of all time

I was addicted to the original Civ, and then came along Civ II. I have tried Call to Power, Civ III, and Alpha Centari, but I always come back to Civ II. It is my all time favorite. It only takes a few years in a new game and I am totally engrossed. I lose hours and days at a time.

Want to lose weight? Start the Civ diet. You will choose Civ over food. Want to break an addiction? Civ will become your new addiction. Want to save your relationship? Well, you should take a break every once in a while.

This is one of my favorite games. It is so addictive. It's great because, you can build your own cities, make armies to crush other civilizations, produce caravans to trade with other countries. You get to compete with other nations to see who will be the first to create wonders of the world. I find myself spending hours at a time playing this game. It's great!

The game to end all games

I laughed when I was reading the other reviews for this game. People saying how they lost all track of time and found themselves having spent hours playing the game. I am one of those people. I'm addicted to Civilization. There I said it. I played Civilization on the SNES, and Civ 2 on computer and the playstation. I play it over and over. I get new games, play them for a while, then come back to this one. It is a game for the thinking man, with endless varieties of strategy.

it's what time???

This is one for the coolest turn based strategy games I have played. I love that fact that if you do well the people will love you; they will rejoice and praise you for all your good deeds. This is such a well thought out and very detailed strategy game.
You start out with nothing and a city; from there you begin to build your empire from the ground up headed for world domination. You can build relationships with other nations or destroy everyone. Trading with other nations and your overall foreign policy if very important to survive and become a world power. This is definitely one of those games where if you don't keep an eye on the clock you will literally lose hours of your life because it is very easy to sit and play this game and 4 hours later you are left wondering where the time went. For the price this game is a steel, well worth the price, don't miss out on this one!

Pretty Amazing

Don't buy this unless you don't mind graphics. I don't and I loved it but some may find it a rough start to get into. I recommend it to AOE fans. It is so hard to get high technologies though and because of this slow part of it then it is a game that can easily turn one off.

Classic of its type

I personally prefer a sense of narrative -- even if it's somewhat cheesy or prefunctory -- with my games, so I've never been able to warm to this the way some might. This is a very abstract game, the way chess is abstract.

That said, it is a brilliantly designed thing, and can be very addictive. At this price, a necessary purchase.

A brilliant game in it's time but get Civ III instead

In it's time, Civilization 2 was the game that kept me at my PC for longer than any other. It's combination of strategy as you attempt to out think your opponents and tactics as you wage war or the enemy and your land is so well balanced, you can lose hours and hours.

Right now, though, we have Civilization 3 and that raised the bar much higher. Still, there are some reasons to look at the older version. If you have a low-end machine it's worth it - and there are still some very active user groups creating very playable scenarios.

In it's time this was a five star game - but now it's more of a historical masterpiece.
