This is an excellent port of the Ps2 version and includes the cool geo-mod engine. but it falls short on gameplay, THERE ISN'T ENOUGH, it will only take you a few sittings to complete this game, but it does have upsides!
The geo-mod engine, which was almost completely ignored in the first one is back and better, including several missions that require you to alter your surroundings.
If you're sick of Unreal, give this a try, but try before you buy.
Wow , the Geo-mod engine is reallyZZzzzzzz....

Better than Unreal? Maybe. As good as a current FPS title? No way. The game is too short, and blowing holes in walls gets real boring after a while. This game looks good however and the parts where you get to pilot tanks and hovercraft is pretty cool but the first game had a better, longer story.
Some amazing parallels to Iraq war. Runs great on old PCs

One of the first things you do in this game is blow up a statue of the main bad guy that looks a lot like a cross between Saddam Hussein and Stalin. While I thought that was rather prescient of the developers, what really baked my noodle happens later when you attack a TV studio. A reporter hiding in a back room keeps publicly broadcasting what cowards you are and how badly you're losing the war--all while you're blasting the hell out of the place! I was actually surprised to see he looked nothing like the Iraqi information minister.
With my dinosaur 550 mhz machine I nearly didn't bother loading up this game thinking the geomod stuff would bring my computer to its knees. I'm glad I did because this game absolutely screams for some reason (probably that low polygon count others are complaining about). And it's a ton of fun. Sure it's an EXTREMELY linear, kill everything kind of game, but it does this very well. There's a lot of good variation in gameplay as the game places you in some different vehicles along the way. While these segments are a little too easy, they had me grinning from ear to ear at the mahyem possible when heavy weapons meets geomod.
And about that geomod...don't expect anything revolutionary. The developers made a big mistake overselling this feature as some kind of breakthrough. They should of just billed it for what it is-- more parts of the environment blasting apart than usual. This is a really cool feature if you don't expect the game to revolve around it. Does it change the way you play this game? Nope. Is it pretty cool when you miss a baddie but the wall behind him shatters? Yep.
Just a mediocre game with some nice graphics.

First off i should say that the original Red Faction is one of my all time fave videogames. It was an absolute masterful game.
But IMO volition should have never made a sequel for it. Some games dont need a sequel and Red Faction is one them. Nuff Said.

i liked the first red faction alright. it had a lot of things going for it.. while the story may not have been the most original, the way the story unfolded was fun to watch and participate in. the geo-mod technology was fine, and it provided several options in most areas as far as how to get to the next room. the multiplayer was a blast, and all the mods people were coming up with were fun to mess around with.
it wasn't the best game in the world, but it was better than most, and it had heart.
but this.. this game is an insult. the story is nonexistant, the A.I. is terrible, the weapons are unnecessary (it's not too difficult to kill anything with any gun), and it is one of the most linear games that i've played in a while. everything that happens in this game happens because it's the only way it CAN happen. there is no room for skill, strategy, or fun in this game. it's truly nothing more than a mindless "bullets and blood" shooter. that's fine and dandy.. but the way the developers have tried to pawn this off as something else is ludicrous. first off.. there is far LESS use of the geo-mod system in this game.. not MORE, as the pre-release reviews stated. and what little use of it there is, is completely pointless, because there aren't very many hidden areas or alternate routes that can be found by "geo-modding" through the walls like there were in the first game.
secondly.. the box hints (in rather dodgy language) that there are multiplayer type games to be found here. but there are NONE. sure.. you can play Deathmatch and Capture the Flag with RF2.. but not online.. you can only play it with a bunch of poorly made A.I. bots. what a gyp! why bother including a multiplayer part of the game IF YOU CAN'T PLAY AGAINST OTHER PEOPLE? Rediculous!
if you're wanting nothing more out of a game than pointless blood and gore with a plethora of huge honkin' guns to kill enemies that move with the intelligence of the old Contra enemies, and fake multiplayer against bots that either run around like idiots or camp like boy scouts, then this game delivers in SPADES.
if, however, your taste in games is a little more, shall we say, refined, then wait.. please wait.. there are a few titles coming out this year that seem promising.. most notably Deus Ex: Invisible War, the sequel to the most intelligent action game ever made.
heck.. anything would be more thought provoking and challenging than Red Faction 2. it's not worth the plastic it's pressed on.
This is a disappointment.

Found this game in a store today, was exicted, since it's hard to find this game in stores now. So I just grabbed it off the shelf and bought it, without reading the back or anything (which doesn't help), get home, install it, load it up, and notice theres NO multiplayer option, not even LAN, unlike the original Red Faction, it supported Mutliplayer/LAN which made the game, since the single player mode was pretty boring after beating it once. THQ, Violation, you need to come up with a patch/update for this game if you don't want your reputation smashed. This is horrible guys, come on. The engine is too slow, it's like a cheap Quake III: Arena engine in slow motion. Skip this game people, if you don't have Red Faction, get that. If you do have Red Faction, some other games you might like is RTCW (Return to Castle Wolfenstein), Quake III: Arena, or Far Cry.
Really Phenomenal

I played this game and it is completely UNBELIEVABLE! I played the first Red Faction as well. HUGE fan of both. If you love shooters as much as I do, then you would be smart and buy this game. Stunning graphics, solid gameplay, hours of fun. I highly recommend it. And if you are new to the series, buy the first Red Faction as well...

I only played the demo version of Red Faction, the first one, and I was thoroughly impressed. With Red Faction 2, the fun is enormous, with its ground-breaking weapons, and its earth-shattering robots. That's one of the main entities I honor a lot in this game--is that you can do sorts of stuff, like entering a large robot, or in a fighter jet--shooting at hostility, and the underwater vehicle. All of these requirements in the missions really do improve its value and worth.
The philosophy of the story is enjoyable. Like in yesteryear's Iraq, the in-game story has a dictator, ruling his part of town, you might say. He basically wants war, and the ruining of innocent poeple. Developers of Red Faction 2 do a good job of portraying the story, and what I mean by that is, in some missions you will see the abandonment of decayed apartment buildings, describing the atmospheric conditions, and the tall statue of the dictator.
The graphics are bright and clear, and most importantly, modern-looking, while the sound is on target.
The only qualm I have about the game is its value. You'll get done through some amazing missions, but, by the end, you won't want to play the bot match. In the bot motch, you don't have much of a will to fight any longer, not without any changes and additions. Same goes for multiplayer.
All in all a great experience considering the price tag. It's definitely worth it if you have the determination.

I've really enjoyed this one so far. Most the other reviews aren't very good. Frame rate seems to suffer some but from what I've found it's still very playable. Lots of destroying bots and property. Game play in deathmatch is at a breakneck pace and you must move or die quickly. I like the graphics also even though I can't run them up at where I'd like.
