Best game ever!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 14 / 15

I have only played the demo of Northland but I am an addict of its predecessors, Cultures and Cultures 2. It is the cutest, most fun city-building sims-style game around. It was never very popular in the US but its European success has led to them finally releasing another in the series over here. Download the demo from northland.com if you're interested, but I highly suggest buying it because once you start you won't want to stop!

Warning: time dissappears but you won't care

Great Game in the tradition of Servcity

I have all the Cultures games and they are wonderful for gamers who are not into 'build thousands of soldiers and go kill everything in sight' action games. The pace is what you want it to make, from slow building to, yes, making soldiers and fighting fights. The graphics are cool, the story makes sense (mostly, grin) and the campaign gives the right mixture of tasks and action. There is one more in this series out in Germany and here's to hoping that we will see it in the U.S. as well. Highly recommended.

Northland Funtastic!

Northland is a fun filled adictive building/strategy game. Each viking is an individual and you have to get them to build a village, extract building material and provide food and homes. You assign jobs to each male viking and he will learn new skills by either working or going to schools. You can often trade your products for things you need. Create soldiers to fight anything from wolves to demons. You have choices as to how you want to play so the game is easily replayable. Some people feel that it takes too long to learn how to play it. Each game in the series builds and improves on the prior one but does not change the basic structure of the game. Once you know how to play one Cultures game you can easily play the next. I am addicted to the game and can play for hours.
My main complaints about the game are that the women do not have enought to do and although you can group the soldiers you cannot really form them into units (as in AoE or AoM).
If you liked Settlers you will love Northland. It is pure fun to play.

I do have to say it took me a while to figure everything out but I haven't been playing games for 10 years so that might expalin. having heard about civilization and shown Northland to people that have played Civilization and Age of empires, it seems to beat all of those. Personally I really enjoyed it. I think the directions can be a bit better (on how to give things to other groups, which is under the menu/window that shows the relationship status with other tribes). I think it's not just clever but also full of options. I soon learned that there is no need to have one woman/man to keep everyone happy (which makes it so that the women run out of work to do because there is so many of them). one woman/household is enough. so the more you play it, the more you learn the tricks. I just bought the sequal, the 8th wonders of the world so once I see how that is, I'll post up a review.

CULTURES 3?

i was a bit disappointed in this game-if you are a cultures addict you will probably still spend hours upon hours upon hours playing northland-as i did-but i think the original cultures is the most challanging-as far as the fighting goes-northland is waaaaay too easy-original cultures is most challanging-cultures 2 is certainly more challanging than northland-did they make northland for little kids?? im just wondering-the only new thing i can see in northland is you get to battle against-and to fight with ghost warriors which is kind of a cute idea-and the werewolf type characters are kind of creepy-otherwise-i am hoping that cultures 4 will be more challanging-the advanced graphics and gameplay of 2 and 3-but a game that offers a diehard cultures addict some serious challanges

This game sucks! You have no idea what you are supposed to be doing. Instructions are not clear. A complet waste of money.

Northland PC Game

This game would have been a good follow up for Settlers IV. It has older style "cartoonish" graphics and works on the same premises. Your villagers are plunked down in the middle of mixed mountainous terrain and must gather everything they need to survive. This game is a good lesson in micromanagement. Every single villager must be personally assigned a job and watched closely to make sure they stay busy. You barely have time to explore for all the attention you need to spend on basic stuff. For example, to get a Brewer, you need to train one villager as a Farmer, Miller and Baker first. I like the game, but it's not something you can just sit down and "play"...

Nothing Special

I love a good Sim/Strategy game as much as the next guy but this game falls short. Its not expensive but I feel its overpriced none the less. This game is pretty much just like any other game in its genre minus challenge and excitement. It doesnt try to be new or try to be different. If you want a game where you micro manage every civilian and have plenty of time on your hands than try it out. Its not a game you can just play for a few minutes and expect results. Its an actual village/city builder. But it feels a little too cartoony for me and the lack of camera angles and detals are frustrating. You have to constantly put up road signs for your civilians and if theyre not up than your people get lost. The woman are almost useless and the fact you have no control over them besides when they get pregnant is annoying. This is a colorful 'toony' 2D environment that feels more like a Nintendo 64 game than a PC game. I say if you want a good city builder than skip this one. If you just want to build a city between commercial breaks and not get too into it than try it out. It feels more like a starter game for strategy/city builder gamers than one that has actual substance.
