Yet Another Racer, but Fun!

Having tried a dozen cartoon-style racing games on many systems, I must say this title does a pretty good job of actually being fun. You start as Crash Bandicoot in an amusement park and explore on foot the different "lands" to collect items to open up tracks, vehicles, and events. While the exploring is fine, the racing itself is quite good. The three lap tracks resemble rides that match the land's theme complete with moving scenery. Since battling is an added element to the racing, the tracks seem long and broad enough to allow for maneuvering while attacking the other racers. The Clash feature where you hit the "Y" button and merge with a nearby car is quite easy to do and a nice change to the typical race and grab the power-ups formula. You and the other racer can either drive or use a turret style gun and depending on your preference, you can switch between the two while in the heat of the race. Battle and stunt arenas are also included here to round out the number of places to race.
Humor is quite in abundance and make for funny touches. The music for one is a bit loony. Animated gags and cut scenes, especially of Crash being blown away by a cannon leaving behind a smoking pair of sneakers, are reminiscent of the Tex Avery brand of cartoon laughs. The tracks themselves are titled with names and familiar references like "Pirates of the Carburator" and the storybook-land "Happily Ever Faster". You may, depending on your familiarity with sports commentators, recognize the Howard Cossell-like voiceover throughout the game as well.
This title makes for a really good time and if you lean towards humorous racing games completely devoid of any seriousness, you can't go wrong.
