An Objective Analysis Against the Normal PS2 Fighter

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

I've seen this game so many times in the game stop five dollar area, I finally bought it. I have about fifteen fighting games for the PS2, some of which I played for a half hour (beat, and shelved), and others I revisit. YYH: Dark Tournament is one of those games you'll play for about three hours and never touch again.

This game lacks depth. The fighting system is easy, reminding of Battle Arena Toshiden (the first one) for the playstation. It's three dimensional circular arena fighting with ringouts, very few special moves, and an unintuitive way of jumping/crouching. Learning curve is about fifteen minutes; run the 'training' mode once and you'll be set. Please keep in mind, this doesn't hold a candle to Soul Calibur 2 much less Soul Calibur 3. Namco's masterpiece does 3-D combat with greater battle depth, character selection, and graphics than this game. Buy either of them for a superior fighting game experience.

Other reviews have stated 'get this if you like Yu Yu Hakasho.' It does have the characters, but the voices are from the American dub. When I watched YYH, it was the superior Japanese with English Subtitles version. The Americanized hokey voices ring false to me (no option for Japanese voices in the game). In my opinion, you should NOT get this if you haven't watched YYH (and want to), since the included cut scenes from the anime give away what happens in the entire 'Dark Tournament' arc of the show.

Overall, it's 2008, if you are looking for another cheap fighting game for fun times on the PS2, look elsewhere.

finally,the yu-yu hakusho has come,to the ps2!

my title is something i really pretty much copied off the rock but i have seen the official screen cover for this on gamestop.com and boy is it tight!i am a anime freak, especially when it comes to dragonball z,yu-yu hakusho, dragonball gt,and of course, inuyasha.but this game is going to be really tight.i already have yu-yu hakusho for game boy advance.it is really tight.but this game, dark tournament, has 25 fighters.and i heard rumors that you could unlock botan and all four saint beast.but this game will be really tight.you will not be dissapointed,i promise.

this game is very good for a hardcore otaku. anyone looking for a good fighting game, i would reccomend soul caliber 2. its a great party game but good otherwise. using the attacks of each individual person you can team up between 16 different people in the YYH world. but again, if your looking for a good fighting game i would go for the gold. a big fan of YYH should go for this game.

REALLY I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE GAME COMES OUT ON PS2. I ALWAYS WATCH THE TV SERIES ON CARTOON NETWORK. I AM ABOUT TO PURCHASE THE YU YU GAME ON THE GBA. I HAVE SEEN THAT THE GRAPICS ARE NOT THE BEST BUT I AM SURE THAT I WILL LIKE IT. SORRY, BACK TO THE PS2 GAME. I AM SURE THAT THE GAME WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER TO HIT THE PS2.

This game definately promises the YuYuHakusho action we now and love, the only thing i found frustrating about this game was that u have to defend constantly and takes some time to get used to how difficult it WILL be when u first get it, there r many scenes from the cartoon and can be fun, but if you want a really good not-so challenging fighting game, go for DBZ budokai (any #)
if u like yuyuhakusho then get this

You did pretty well, Atari.

When I rented this game, I hoped this would be a good fighting game, with a good fighting system, and unique characters. For the most part, I got what I wished for. There's more characters than you can shoot a spirit bullet at, and loads of environments and extras. I only had a few problems with this game. The fighting system needs work, and the token game was very difficult and an unnessesary device. Plus, parents might not let kids play this because of 1 little cutscene after your first fight with Younger Toguro. I will quote.
Yusuke (thinking): "Stupid Yusuke! You were so scared you couldn't even freakin' move! You idiot! He's gonna kick your stupid @$$!" Otherwise, this is the perfect game for YuYu Hakusho fans. A must-own.

I can't wait for this game. I saw some screenshots of this game and they look cool. YYH is the best anime ever and I'm sure that they will put the sagas into the story mode(if they have one). Well I'm just waiting for (...) for YYH Dark Tourament.

Great fun for Yu Yu Hakusho Fans

Yu Yu Hakusho Dark Tournament is based on an anime series. Yusuke Urameshi, the main character, is a 14 year old. He was killed and brought back to life, and now is able to see ghosts.

The game puts Yusuke into an arena tournament fighting situation, with the familiar friends and foes from the show. There is a training mode to help you get started, and skirmish mode to practice your moves. Then there are arcade and dark tournament modes to get you into actual gameplay, moving through levels of difficulty.

You can't really compare the graphics in this game to other fighting games like Mortal Kombat. The point of Dark Tournament is to feel like you're immersed in the Yu Yu Hakusho world, and it does this quite nicely. The anime style and backgrounds are all very much of the Yu Yu Hakusho style. There are several different arenas to fight in, and many characters to choose from. Each character has his or her own style and look.

In addition to the basic fighting game, there is also a built in "token game". You earn tokens when you fight. You then move to the token game to use them. The token game is very much like a strategy card game, using a hexagonal based board. This addition makes the overall game much more long term. You have incentive to keep fighting, to earn tokens. Then in the token game you can build up your token stash to do better and better.

Definitely a game that any Yu Yu Hakusho fan will love, and play for a long time!
