A Motorized Descent into Hell

What took me so long? I held off purchasing Twisted Metal: Black because I was not convinced that the game was as good as everyone had been saying.

I love being wrong.

This is one of the rare times when a game is actually BETTER than advertised. TM:B drops you headlong into a surreal world of murder, betrayal, and insanity. This isn't a game for the kids, folks. Incog Inc. has cited being influenced by the films Seven, Jacob's Ladder and The Silence of the Lambs when making TM:B - this should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect here. The characters you meet during your journey aren't the type to bring home to Mother, to put it mildly. The game oozes oppressive dread, whether you're charging about laying waste to the countryside or hunting your prey through the bowels of a giant ship. I'm a huge fan of the horror genre in music, film, books, and gaming, and I've never played a game that got so deep under my skin so quickly. The atmosphere is a work of dark genius, from the oily storm clouds churning overhead to the tortured screams of burning victims.

Luckily for game freaks, Black has more than enough gameplay to back up the seedy supernatural setting. Choose one of several vehicles, each with its own grotesque driver, and you're on your way, whether it be through well-written but extremely graphic Story Mode, Endurance Mode (how many can you kill before dying yourself?) or Challenge (You vs. Them in a single arena). The vast environments are nothing short of incredible, and vary from a drive-in movie theater to a downtown area with pedestrians and skyscrapers, to an obstacle-choked junkyard and a freeway (complete with fully destructible commuter traffic). Each heavily armed vehicle is unique, and handles differently. Each also has its own Special Attack, some of which will make you squirm with delight (especially Preacher's). Scattered about each area are weapons pick-ups, health boosts, and repair stations. Those who pay attention will see real-time changes to your vehicle as you select different weapons. In addition, several arenas have environmental attacks, which range from shooting down a circling airliner to causing a giant Ferris wheel to careen through the landscape. Vehicles are also equipped with energy moves (which are inputted much like simple fighting game maneuvers) and a turbo gauge. The controls are a bit overwhelming at first, but after a few minutes they become second nature. Although the game is not easy, it ramps the difficulty up superbly, causing you to become quite adept in order to proceed. It's awesome stuff, and there are a large number of secrets to uncover as you speed about, trying to survive. If you're lucky enough to have a few like-minded friends, there are several multiplayer modes which are more than adequate, and there are even certain arenas that are accessible only in multiplayer.

I pay close attention to atmosphere in gaming, and TM:B has the most effective, darkest atmosphere I've ever encountered, its sense of dread surpassing even Silent Hill's. It doesn't jump in your face screaming, but sneaks into your head with slow, deliberate menace. The increased processing power of the new consoles has freed developers to create utterly convincing atmosphere along with gameplay, and TM:B is a work of art on both levels. Simply put, it's one of the best games I'll ever play.

I played the Twisted Metal Series all the way up to three. At which point I immediately took the game back to the store and never touched the series again until 989 stopped producing it. In a word this game is breathtaking. Viusally incredible, the levels are huge, interactive, and fun as heck. So the question is why did I rate the game a 3 star? Simple, it wasn't as fun as the first two. I am grateful for the increased AI for the computer opponents. This has to be the most difficult game I have played yet on the PS2. Also, the characters were evened out alot in the sharing of balance of power. It's no longer a game of taking spectre, finding a spot no one can touch you at and then firing off specials till you win. But you have to use strategy and the levels to win. Even in deathmatch mode. No, what i didn't like was the replay value. i got bored of playing it after I had beaten it with the different characters. Playing with my friends, was boring even on the different stages. Sorry just couldn't keep my attention after the initial crush. Hopefully it will claim my attention again if they make it an online experience like the back of the instruction booklet/journal claims.

Sold it after playing for two hours

While this game was nice to look at, I did not care for the game play. I tried to like it, but could not bring myself to enjoy it.

It was so difficult that I made no progress. I couldn't even increase the number of cars I killed as I played through multiple games. The cars were difficult to control with the joystick part of the controller. I found myself getting shelled as I tried to get lined up for the recharge platform. The opponents only come after you, but don't really shoot at each other. While I don't have a problem with unrealistic physics in an unrealistic game, the disparity of expected car behavior from actual behavior was somewhat disorienting (and somewhat nauseating).

The plot of the game was very dark and rather disturbing. I guess what was really disturbing was the possibility of kids getting hold of this. When in the character intro, the clown character (pictured on the front of the package) says, "I'll kill that mother ...," I found it to be over the top.

The day after I bought TMB, I put it up for sale on e-bay. If you think you would like this game, I would rent it first. If you want to warp your kids more than TV has already done, this is a must have. If I were a parent, I would ban this game in my house.

Same as Twisted Metal: Black.

Simply put, this is just Twisted Metal: Black, with new online capabilities. The graphics are awesome, and the characters are awesome. The gameplay, too, is awesome. If you want to play online, this is the version you want. If not, get the original.

Finally a Twisted Metal game that doesn't suck. Ever since TM 1&2 there has been a drought in the car combat genre. TM:B has filled the void. The graphics are smooth moving at a silky 60fps the car designs rule and the gameplay is top notch. The levels are huge and some of them expand as you play through them. Plus you get to blow stuff up what more could you ask for in a game. Simply put Twisted Metal: Black is one of the reasons to buy a PS2.

I am now a believer!

My first experience in the car combat genre was the first Twisted Metal about two years ago. By that time the game was quite outdated, and I was somewhat disappointed. I was then very hesitant to purchase this game. Consequently, I researched it quite extensively before I eventually purchased it. I read approximately 30 user reviews and about a dozen game site reviews. Semi-reluctantly, I then dropped the 50 or so dollars and decided to give it a shot.

I was kind of disappointed after playing it the first time. It was so fast and there was enough of an initial learning curve to make the game very frustrating. HOWEVER, I spent more time with it, and now I LOVE it. This game is a blast. I am not a big "car combat" person, but this game is fun. Believe what you read about the graphics, gameplay, sound, and lasting appeal. All four categories excel above and beyond what I thought they would. Also, believe what you read about the difficulty of this game. IT IS NOT EASY. I very rarely start any games on anything less than medium. Medium on this game is hard/very hard on any other game.

Also, any parents be warned this game deserves its mature rating. The game play is no more violent than most other shoot-em-ups, but the cutscenes are no walk in the park. IT IS A VERY DARK GAME.

In conclusion, for any of you fence-sitters out there, who are not sure they are a real car-combat fan, buy this anyway. You will have a lot of fun - but be a little patient it will take you an hour or two before you get the hang of things.

An Instant Classic!!!

WOW! Twisted Metal Black is the bomb!!! I never really followed the old Twisted Metal games, and frankly, I wasn't much of a fan of them. I was an idiot. But now, my eyes are open. Twisted Metal Black is one of the most addictive, entertaining, and challenging games I've ever played. At first I was intimidated by the difficulty, but soon, I was intrigued by it. I devoted hour after hour to decimating all vehicles that crossed my path. The weapons are spectacular. There's the power missle, the homing missle, the fire missle, the zoomy, the satellite bomb, the gas can (flame 'em!), the richochet (it's not a rolling bomb anymore), the environmental attack, the rectile (wait 5 seconds and the BOOM), the special weapon (which of course differs from player to player, and, last but not least, the trusty machine gun and machine gun upgrade. The newly designed characters are awesome. The graphics are beautiful The levels in this game are astounding. Some of them are so massive that I got lost the first few times I played in them (Suburbs and Prison Passage). And, especially when the difficulty is on hard, this game is one tough mother. It takes a lot of practice and skill tuning to beat this game on hard. Most of all, the multiplayer is more addictive than crack. When I think back of how many hours me and my friends have played of Twisted Metal Black, I feel kind of ashamed... NOT!!! This a GREAT game. I recommend it to anyone. I LOVE IT! Be careful, this game can swallow you whole. Twisted Metal Black is flawless.

Kind of Disturbing........yes.

I just got this game a few days ago and let me tell you what I think.
The first thing I noticed was that the game was very....evilish. Every character has something wrong with them. Sweet Tooth is a psycotic mass murderer who gets a thrill out of massacring the innocent. No Face had his eyes and mouth sewd shut. JunkDog kills his wife for falling in love with an airplane pilot. He kills her by beating her with a blunt gardening tool for over an hour. Sick huh. I was a little disturbed. You know when you get that feeling in your stomach. I don't like that. I can handle the violence and all, but I really don't like watching someone getting punched in the face with a boxing glove with knives, needles and scissors poking out of it, or someone getting slaughterd by an axe.
The one thing I didn't like the most is that nearly everyone in the game was in there to get revenge or because they hated someone. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is fun and challenging, but you kind of feel ashamed for playing such a psychotic game. I liked the TM's how they used to be, with some humor. In conclusion, don't get the game if you don't want to wind up depressed or brainwashed. If you love horror stories with all kinds of killers, get it while its cheap.

BIG, BIG DISSAPOINTMENT

Characters - AWESOME
Graphics - AWESOME
Soundtrack - AWESOME
Controls - AWESOME
Computer AI - ooooh my lawd do we have problems here....
Replayability - see above...

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned before. Yes the game is disturbing and looks and sounds nice (if demented - which is fine by me) and it's obvious that the artists who did the graphics and sounds put their heart and soul into this project and I commend them for their good work. But man alive, whoever designed the AI for the enemy vehicles for this game screwed up...

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but after the tenth time of being ganged up on by five cars in the first level after TWO HOURS of playing...well it gets old. I though this game was supposed to be chaotic and mindlessly fun? Well, I don't consider having to take on waves and waves of enemies working together to kick my butt fun. What starts off as having so much promise becomes a brain-busting excersise in futility. Even deathmatch mode is like that - supposedly the cars are against one another, but in reality they're working together to kill you.

I don't even mind how intelligent the enemies are, as if they were stupid and the game were easy, I'd give it the same rating. But why not just have it be a true every-psycho-for-himself war every level? Not only do you increasse the fun factor out the wazoo, but you add in an endless amount of replayability.

If you're a multiplayer gamer, you definetly want this as two/three/four human opponents hunting one another down in this game is lotsa fun. But for the single player...be prepared for a lot of frustration and throwing the controller down after dying for the thirtieth time in five hours after being stuck on the SAME LEVEL the entire time.
