I saw all of the positive reviews of this game, and imagine my surprise when I found it for sale on the Used Games rack at my local Electronics Boutique! I was very excited, and I asked the clerk if he had played it, and he said no, so home I went to play for myself. There are many selections to make before playing. It seemed very complex, but I figured with all of these positive reviews, it must be worth it. I was wrong! Let me say, I usually only go for sports games, unless there is a noticible excception. This was not it. Very complex control system, and difficult to play. I only give it 2 stars because the graphics are very nice. If you are a sports gamer, don't waste your time. If, however, you are a pilot, or want to be one, then read the instruction book (twice) and jump in to this tedious, but good looking game.

Great game, good graphics and gameplay, but no sound! Let me explain. If you've taken the time to hook up your PS2 to your digital sound system with an optical cable - don't buy this game! It doesn't support digital sound (as all of the 30 other PS2 and PS games I own do!)
What a disappointment! No disclaimer on the box, but there is a note about the problem deep on the manufacturere's website!
Fun but has technical problems

Sky Odessey is a real fun flying game. The game play is good and the missions are varied; however it has one big flaw: There's no sound unless you've got the analog audio cables hooked up.
I only had the optical coax for sound and had to spend a half hour on a long distance call with Activision support to find out that that configuration wont work.
Now everytime I play, I have to switch the cables on my PS2 and home theatre system. It's a pain.
Great Game

Really beautiful and fun to fly. I'm terrible at it, but I still play it all the time because I love to fly that biplane through the ravine. If you can't pick up on the standard controls (roll right and pull up to go right, like Star Wars), you can switch to easy-mode (push right to go right, like Star Fox).
The music and sound effects are nice, the only problems I have is that it seems that the game determines a stall not by the wind-speed (which is how I'm pretty sure it works), but by the speed of your plane relative to the ground (ie, full throttle into a wind storm will stall you out)
Not a high-thrill action game, but great for a lazy afternoon of flying (until you hit the harder levels, that is)
interesting game

This is the kind of flight simulator I have been looking for! If I wanted all the knobs, buttons and gizmos true flight simulators have, I'd just get my pilot's license. This is just a fun and simple game. No fuss or messy keystrokes to remember. You can just throw the CD in and begin flying with easy to use controls and gorgeous graphics.
I was also surprised at this game's long playability. There are so many levels and missions, that this game will have long lasting appeal. Also, I must admit I found myself drawn to the sky-writing exercises. I know how lame that might sound, but blowing smoke out the back of your plane while trying to make shapes and words was oddly addictive. I don't remember ever seeing that in other flight simulators.
So, if you are real pilot, I am sure this game will disappoint. However, if you just want to fly around with ease while having a great time, this game is sure to please.
Great graphics, decent game, but...

If you like flight simulators, this game is for you. I loved the graphics, and the missions are challenging, but I found myself bored with the game pretty quickly, mainly because this just isn't my type of game.
The missions in the game were challenging, but not overly difficult. Learning to fly and control the plane was much easier than I expected. Graphics were great, just what you would expect from a PS2.
Personally, I like a good, realistic dog fighting simulator much like Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator. This game reminds me of Microsoft's regular flight simulator with challenges.
If you like flying, this game is definitely for you. If you are like me and looking for flying with intense action and the challenge of flying with crippled planes, look for something else.

Isn't it a wonder ho[w] fast computer games can evolve. I remember buying Pilot Wings on the nintendo 64 and being amazed, but now things have moved on we now hace Sky Odyssey. The concept is pretty much the same as Pilot Wings but with more modes of play. You can just fly around for ages for amusment which is something that i have been doing for a long time as i cant believe how good the graphics are. This is a good game to have as its so different to what is around at the moment
The most fun you'll ever have without blowing something up!

Any fan of aircraft should like this game. It has a good mix of flight simulator characteristics and arcade action. Sky Odyssey is by no means perfect, but it's pretty darn fun and the anticipation of unlocking new aircraft as you play is intoxicating. The customization features available for your airplanes (customizable color schemes, custom insignia, etc.) are pretty cool. Being able to control your aircraft from engine start up to engine shut down is nice. It's not every flying game that gives you the option to set her down wherever you darn well please, so long as your ship can take the brunt of some rough landings. The different styles of gameplay (free flight, adventure mode, target mode) make replay value higher than average.
In the cons column: I like blowing stuff up from the air. A few weapons based missions would've been awesome, but I guess the developers were trying to get away from that and they did a good job of making the game entertaining even if you can't cause damage to anything but your own aircraft. Also, the camera angles make the gameplay a little difficult at times. It's as if your little pilot has had is noggin glued to the head-rest in the cockpit. An option to look out the side of the cockpit over the wing a la Ace Combat 4 would have been very helpful at times.
If you're looking for a game to fly around and blow stuff up, try Ace Combat 4. But if you're just in the mood to experience the joy of flying in some vintage WWII aircraft (along with a few enjoyable figments of the imagination), through a graphically intense world, this if for you.

Ha, I bought this after reading all the reviews and having this vision of myself piloting a plane through exotic lands. Well, if I got good at this game, I might be able to do all that. Getting through mission 1 has already driven me batty. Took me awhile to figure out that I need to use a slower plane, and that helped. It is a cool game, I have no doubt about that. I think I lack patience perhaps, but after crashing 10 times in a row and having to start the mission over, I said a few choice words and put it away for awhile. Don't let that stop you. If it was too easy , I would be complaining. If you have time to master this, go for it. I know I will come back to it as it is now my mission to complete Mission 1. I can get through 90% of the boulders, but then it all goes downhill. Plus landing is not an easy feat. There is a tutorial to teach you all these cool things, and I tried it. I made it up to landing on the aircraft carrier. I just know that aircraft carrier moved around while I was trying to land on it. Don't pay full price though, it can be had for much cheaper.
