Sky Odyssey, by Activision, for Playstation 2, first attracted me with the box art. I am an airplane "nut", and I thought I recognized a World War II vintage Japanese Experimental fighter plane "strafing" a ralroad train. I was wrong about the strafing, but correct on the type of aircraft. As I read the back of the box, I realized that I hadn't seen a game exactly like this before. I own another "flight-sim" Playstation game called "Bravo Air Races", but this seemed different...Activision came through again. This game had everything to start you out as the pilot of any of three airplanes,(a vintage bi-plane, a World War II bf-109 Messersschmitt fighter, or an experimental prop-jet hybrid twin tail),trying to discover a lost island. You had to take off, fly realistically, and land safely. You can crash,(sometimes often), and start the level over, but you are always learning. There are also wind gusts, rain, snow, etc. to contend with. The planes can be up-graded by successfully completing a level with a high enough score. You can opt for a faster wing, or more powerful engine, or streamlined canopy, etc. While there are the three planes to try out at first, certain rewards open up eight new ones including a stealth fighter and even two UFO's. Planes can be painted in your favorite colors and you even have the option of creating your own "logo" to adorn them. It was well worth the money, and I am waiting to see if a sequel is about to land on my store shelves in the near future. It would be a dream come true. ( If Activision IS envisioning a second "Fly-By", I am volunteering to be a "Test Pilot" for them). The only downside of the game, to me, is the choice of flying into underground caverns, it's not very true-to-life. One other point of note; Sky Odyssey is totally non-violent. The planes have no guns or bombs, the only explosions are when you crash. The pilots in the game are actually life savers by dropping supplies to stranded people on a mountain, or taking a package out to land on an aircraft carrier in the middle of a thunderstorm, or by helping a run-away hot air balloon by taking weights to it in mid-air. I only crashed into them once, (I felt so bad). At one point you must fly with pontoons on your plane so you can land on water, and you can actually feel the extra drag they cause the plane and the flight restictions they impose by their weight. You may be able to perform a roll with them on, but you will not get any aerobatic points by doing so like you can without them on. By the way, never forget to retract, (or extend), your landing gear on planes that can do so. Forgetting to retract them will slow you down, and they might get caught on an obstacle. Forgetting to extend them is self-explanitory. Thank you for the opportunity to express myself on a subject that I love. We need more simulation games like this. Thank you for creating it, Activision. And Thank you Playstation for having the graphics to bring this game to life.

Really fun game! Great graphics, fun missions, it's like you're in the plane! You can unlock planes, do over 40 missions, draw sky pictures, fly through targets for powerups, and training to get skilled at this fantastic game. Rated E so its great for all ages. your family will be intertained for a long time. Have fun!

This game is awesome!

First off, the missions are pretty hard! Now I am on the Mid-air Rendezvous (if you don't have this game you have no idea what I just said) and it is really hard!

I don't like that you only have a choice of 3 aircraft: a bi-plane, an experimental, jet, and a military plane. Also, you have limited choice of customizations.

The graphics on this game are horrible-there is no other way to say it! They aren't 3D at all like that package says, and, they use the same "pattern" over and over again, IE: using the same stones for the landing strip.

A good thing is that you have many play options- missions (from landing on an aircraft carrier to re-fueling on a train, and soooo many more), free flight (fly freely, unlimited fuel, over areas you have already completed), target (hit the "bulls-eye" so to speak), training (learn how to do it), and options (change options).

The planes fly pretty good, with good control and speed. My favorite plane is the BF-109 Custom (military jet) beacause it is easily controlled with out comprimising speed. My least favorite is the experimental jet, beacuse it is very hard to control. In the middle is the bi-plane, with slow speed but very easy control.

A way that this game can be improved is more plane choices, more custimization features, and better graphics.

Last Word:
This game WILL NOT teach you how to be a pilot, will not. Have a nice day.

Fun but has technical problems

Sky Odessey is a real fun flying game. The game play is good and the missions are varied; however it has one big flaw: There's no sound unless you've got the analog audio cables hooked up.

I only had the optical coax for sound and had to spend a half hour on a long distance call with Activision support to find out that that configuration wont work.

Now everytime I play, I have to switch the cables on my PS2 and home theatre system. It's a pain.

Pure Flying Fun!

This game is a great combination of flight simulation and arcade fun! The adventure mode really stands out with a variety of mission types in many different environments with varied terrain. The 3D databases are HUGE and nicely detailed (mountains, rivers, oceans, forests) with some cool dynamic effects thrown in - (waterfalls, geysers, rock slides). The weather effects (wind, clouds, rain, snow) are very good and add a lot to the impressiveness of the game. You'll almost find yourself shivering when flying through the snowstorms in one mission of the adventure mode!

The flying dynamics are pretty good - though perhaps a little "floaty". It does provide a good sense of being aloft. You can see the control surfaces deflecting as you apply controls. After playing for a few hours, you get a sense of "feel" for the aircraft you're flying. For example, using the rudders in normal (not "easy") control mode is important to tighten up turns and straighten the plane during wind gusts.

It is easy to see that a lot of work went into this game. If you enjoy flight simulations, I highly recommend this game.

Really Fun to Play

This is a must have for the PS2. I've never been a fan of Microsoft Flight Simulator or games that have really complicated controls. This game has just the right amount of controls and is just really fun to play.

Great Graphics - Reconfigure Your Sound!

Great game, good graphics and gameplay, but no sound! Let me explain. If you've taken the time to hook up your PS2 to your digital sound system with an optical cable - don't buy this game! It doesn't support digital sound (as all of the 30 other PS2 and PS games I own do!)

What a disappointment! No disclaimer on the box, but there is a note about the problem deep on the manufacturere's website!

I saw all of the positive reviews of this game, and imagine my surprise when I found it for sale on the Used Games rack at my local Electronics Boutique! I was very excited, and I asked the clerk if he had played it, and he said no, so home I went to play for myself. There are many selections to make before playing. It seemed very complex, but I figured with all of these positive reviews, it must be worth it. I was wrong! Let me say, I usually only go for sports games, unless there is a noticible excception. This was not it. Very complex control system, and difficult to play. I only give it 2 stars because the graphics are very nice. If you are a sports gamer, don't waste your time. If, however, you are a pilot, or want to be one, then read the instruction book (twice) and jump in to this tedious, but good looking game.

this is so cool
