They could have done so much more...

The idea behind Shadow of Destiny is fresh and unique: You have been chosen to travel back through time, as far back as the sixteenth century, to prevent your own murder and unravel the circumstances behind it. I never would have guessed it would have taken only 6 hours of gameplay to solve a mystery this intricately presented. I bought this hoping it would be a "thinking" game, and a break from the multitude of FF/Chrono Cross battle-oriented games. Do not let the claims on the box fool you--the chapters are not "massive," the puzzles are not challenging, and there is little to no replay value.

The best things about Shadow of Destiny are the graphics. The movies especially are beautifully rendered. This game is the first display I've seen of the potential of the PS2. Unfortunately, the best part of the game is also its most serious downfall (aside from being dubiously short!). The VAST majority of the game is movie-watching. The only parts where the player is actually manipulating the character is while running around and talking to people. Through the constant movies, answers to puzzles are spoon-fed to the player. Even the most novice of players could not miss the glaring red light pointing at what to do next. The movies even solve some puzzles FOR you! I felt like the game was playing itself, leading me along by the reins, and that I had little input to offer.

The premise is great and had so much potential, and I'm disappointed Konami didn't bother to make this game longer and more challenging. I would have given this game higher marks if I wasn't so disappointed in what they COULD have done with this game but didn't. Overall, this is a renter. I would not recommend this game for purchase, because it is far too short, and far too mentally unstimulating. Ooh and ahh at the eye candy, then return it to the video store.

What makes it special is that it's the first PlayStation game ever where you have to defeat your ennemy with a time travel device.
I gave it 4 stars because the game is too short for an expensive PS2 game ( 2 or 3 hours !). On the other hand there are several possible endings and a bonus game, the game has a nostalgic atmosphere and the graphics are astonishing.

I bought this game used and wish that I could find a dozen more like it. I do not like video game violence. I don't want to kill people. But I love the whole exploring a world, figuring out puzzles angle. This game was perfect for that. It had attractive graphics, an interesting premise and good challenges.

On the downside, it doesn't really call out to be replayed once you get through it once. Which is why it's better to buy it used (and why I wish they'd make a sequel!)

I guess it was sort of okay...........

I bought this game over a year ago and I have not yet beaten it. It is interesting but I cannot figure out what to do on the second level so the game offers me no enjoyment anymore. If you like RPG's you should probably check it out. But if you're looking for a lot of action, you certainly won't find it here.

Amazing Non-Action Game

One of the highest graphical games I have ever seen. A very good plot, although at times your guy is not too bright. Non-Action, as the title said, but not all games need action. I agree with 'spencer ma' that a sequal or a related game should come out.

This was a good game that keeps you thinking. The story line is that something terrible has happened and you end up being able to go back in time to change events and therefore change the outcome. You get to go back to different era's such as the horse and buggy era and back to modern day. There are several endings as well depending on what you've done. You end up playing it through several times to experience the different endings. The plot of the story is good and the game has a good pace because time is an issue. So you feel like you got to stay on your toes!

If you like movies...

If you want to star in a movie about stopping your own death, play this game. It is as if you are the star of the film. But that also means that there are many cut-scenes. These cut-scenes are very well done with great graphics, excellent music, and very dramtic. But there are those of you out there that don't liek cut-scenes at all. If this is the case for you reader, don't buy this game.

If you do love movies, and enjoy watching cut-scenes, you can't go wrong with this game.

I have played the entire game and let me tell you, it is a steal at any price. It is that good...if you like cut-scenes.

Just Enough Game for Such as Me!

For the casual adventure game fan, this game is perfect. I usually consider myself a fighting game fan but do occasionally like to play an adventure game. People complain that this game is too brief which may be true if you have 2 months to dedicate to one game. But for those of us with lives, three to six hours dedicated to one game is ample time! It goes long enough to enjoy the plot but is not so tedious that it turns off the average player. The graphics and movies in this game are great! The plot is the best in a video game EVER! I highly reccomend it overall because this is a damn good game which will keep you entertained for hours!

Just as good as it sounds on the back

I just bought this game and it really did blow me away. Sure it's kind of easy to finish but that's probably a good thing. If the game were any longer it might be tedious. I've seen four of the five different endings and all but one was worth the hours it took to play it. When I finished one ending I just started the game up again and tried for the others. The characters are interesting overall and it's kind of funny to see what they're doing in all the different time periods. Plus, there's supposedly an extra mini game once you get the original five endings. This game is for anyone who likes a good think but doesn't have the time for a book. It invites replaying too. If you've seen a segment before you can skip right through it and keep on going. Definitely worth the fifty bucks I paid.

Shadow of Destiney is a game for people who don't really need all the fighting. But don't get me wrong,it's a very scary game. It's suberb on storyline. It'll keep you thinking the whole way through. If your easily confused this is not the game for you. and the 3-D effects are amazing. No wonder it's by Japanese people. Har Har Har! Just rent the game! I don't feel like typing anymore. Oh yeah, the music is totally scary.
