JMMT - An Excellent effort from 3DO

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 14 / 17

Jonny Moseley Mad Trix is the first newschool/freestyle skiing game of its kind to be released for Playstation 2. In JMMT you compete to win skis, magazine cover shots, special characters and new levels. JMMT is not goal based like Tony Hawk's Proskater, in JMMT you start off with 1 practice level and 1 competition level along with 3 characters including Jonny Moseley and two other fictional characters. To progress to new levels you must win medals which are won by achieving high scores. When you start you are given slopestyle mode and a practice mode, you can access Big Mountain mode once you are very successful in slopestyle mode.

Controls:
In JMMT there is a very different controller setup than most games; however, it has similarities with many other games such as Tony Hawk, Cool Boarders and SSX. You perform grabs by using different combinations with the left and right triggers. You can tweak your grabs to achieve a higher score using the square button. To perform tricks as you approach the lip of a jump hold X and a direction or combination of directions on the D-pad(ex...down, down+right, down+left) and just before you leave the lip of the jump you release X (Just like SSX). You can also control your rotations and flips while you are in the are using the D-pad (Like Tony Hawk Proskater). You can only steer using the left analog stick which can make difficult gameplay at certain points. Each Character has a Signature Grab and Signature Grind. In total there are 14 different grabs to choose from and all of which can be tweaked with the square button. Grinds are performed by jumping onto a rail and pressing the triangle button.

Gameplay:
JMMT is a very surealistic game, is it possible to ever grind on the golden gate bridge? I think not, the un-realisticness of this game is good and bad. If you are a skier you would tend to want a more realistic game so that you could compare it to your true skiing style. If you are not a skier tou would tend to want a more arcade based game. JMMT has the best of both worlds. You can perform real life tricks however just like THPS you can take realistic tricks and bend reality and you can do triple rodeo flips. This game however depicts skiing quite accurately and it is a surprisingly good effort from 3D0.

Characters:
Non-Fictional - Jonny Moseley, Evan Raps, Tanner Hall, Vincent Dorion
Fictional - A.T. Barron, Miki Lijima, Phat Earl Grogan, Beth "Wild Child" Clark, Skier X

The two reasons that I disliked JMMT are because of its TERRIBLE soundtrack and a few gliches in the game.

JMMT is not so bad...

First off, if you compare this extreme skiing game to SSX (or SSX Tricky), JMMT doesn't come close. But, since this is the only skiing game out there right now for PS2, it's definitely worth a look.

The jump, grind, and trick schemes is almost exactly like SSX, so if you're familiar with that scheme, you'll pick up Mad Trix in no time. Some of the tricks are not so realistic (especially being able to do mistys and rodeos without a jump) and not as fluid as those in SSX.

The courses are based on snowy versions of real-life venues (San Francisco, Las Vegas, Rome, Washington DC...) and I thought they were pretty well designed. Lots of jumps, rails, and boosters to be found.

There is also a ski school & freeride to get you acclimated to the courses. Sound is OK, with the good music balanced by the announcer who sounds like Lurch from the Addams Family. Luckily, you can turn him off.

All in all, even though it's not up to SSX standards, the main reason why I like Jonny Moseley's Mad Trix is that I picked this game up much quicker than SSX, and my scores on JMMT were higher more quickly. I think it's because the racing is a bit slower than on SSX, so I had just a split-second more time to think about (and pull off) my next trick. If you like racing games with trick elements, definitely try this one.

I'd rather jump off a birdge

Let me tell you a story about this being the worst game ever! The controls are just jacked up. It just doesn't feel right trying to do the big tricks. THPS made the tricks flow together, nothing like this game. Another thing, what were they thinking when they made levels in Las Vegas, and San fransisco. I mean if it was a real skiing game, why not make the levels at places where you can actually ski. Jackson Hole, Copper Mountain, Squaw, Mt, Mammoth, Wolf creek. ...

JMMT a SUCCESS

Finally a game for skiers! This game is extremely fun to play, and you will find yourself loosing hours playing it. The only bad thing about it are the game controls can be awkward since you can only steer your player with the left analog button, and you control the players jumps {rotations, flips, ect.} with the d-pad. Also, some may not like that it's only a one-player game. Lastly, it's a great introduction to the new world of skiing {freeskiing}. Ultimately it is SSX {show-off} on sticks.

It's about time

It is about time that they made a game about trick skiing. Plus with Jonny on the cover it's got to be good. SSX on sticks.

Any way buy this game. It is the only way to get this kind of action I know of in a PSX2 game. I hope it comes out for the other next gen. systems too.

Play it early in the morning - crank the headphones and have some
real fun for a change.

Finally a game that is for skiing!!!!! It is a blast also!! At first I had to get used to the menu and setup because it is really poorly set up. But once play the game it is awsome. the storyline of it is really cool and realistic. One downside is that there is no multiplayer, but you can always get around that. If you are a skier it is a must own and if you are a snowboarder definitley consider it.

Forget going to a skiing resort...

This game is better, and a lot cheaper too. I usually going skiing about every week, but I don't even feel the need to now. This game is so great. The vivid graphics and sound make you are really there. You don't have to feel all cold either. Even people who don't like or know how to ski will soon fall in love with this excellent game.
