FROGGER--- If I could have given 0 stars, I would!!!

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 8 / 8

IN a word, aweful. Despite all the hype before it was released, this game is the pits. Why? The controlls are jerky and annoying, the camera gets stuck and lost, you cannot save during a board, the cutscenes are unintelligible, it is pointlessly hard--I must have spent 2 hours trying to jump on a railing to ring a bell the railing was right in front of me but since he hops, it is purely random, lastly THE GAME GETS CONSTANTLY STUCK-- for example, if you jump from under an island (and you spend most of your time swimming)you get stuck inside the graphic of the island, and there is no escape!!! And since you cannot save the game during a board, just at the end, if you get stuck on a puzzle, or trying to jump on a railing, or to keep from getting stuck in computer limbo, it is purely maddening!!!

Instead, try Jak and Daxter (I am not a developer or in any way affiliated with any game company...etc..) The most fun I've had since I first played Spyro the Dragon!! WHen oh when is there going to be a new game for PS2.... I cannot recommend Jak and Daxter enough--everything this game gets wrong, it gets right.

If you rented Frogger, you would stop playing after an hour.

I'm sure there is a worse game for PS2, but I can't think of what it could be

We love this game!

My husband and I recently purchased PS2 for ourselves (no kids) and Frogger: The Great Quest was one of the first games we rented and then purchased. We love it!...We've had the game for weeks now, and while we don't play it constantly, its great for an hour or two of play at every sitting and we're only a little more than halfway through. Its challenging enough to be fun but easy enough that you don't dread playing. In other words, its not impossible and that's what makes it fun. If anyone remembers the Nintendo game StarTropics, this game is in the same vein. It involves searching for and finding items and defeating foes. I don't know what the other reviewers hated about this game, unless perhaps it wasn't violent enough and wasn't impossible to win. For two adults, 37 and 43, we're really enjoying this game and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is not into the blood and guts type games and simply want a challenging but "dooable" fun time.

Frustrating and disappointing

I generally have high hopes for any 3-D platform game that features toadstools and fireflies. We know that a fairly detailed and colorful 3-D world can be created on a PS (1 or 2), and games like the three Spyro games did just that, with smooth gameplay and beautiful backgrounds. This game, however, does none of those things. Although his is a Playstation TWO game, the graphics are rather flat and lifeless, especially in the early levels, which is where you want to capture players' interests. The potential for vivid, colorful detail on the PS2 is far beyond what this game accomplishes -- this looks more like an early PS1 game.

The most frustrating part of this game has got to be its tendency to freeze up, get stuck, or block your view. Very sloppy programming. Within five minutes of starting the game, Frogger's head was STUCK IN A BOAT while he was swimming underwater, forcing me to retart from the beginning. Then, once again about five minutes in he got stuck in MIDAIR and I had to start over again. Meanwhile, the incredibly choppy movement does not feel smooth or natural at all. I spent most of my time accidentally jumping into the water because the "jump" is fairly difficult to control. The storyline and dialogue are rather lifeless as well and I find myself turning the volume down so I don't have to hear the same two or three lines, like "I know Frog-fu!" over and over again.

I imagine that a child playing this game would be as irritated as I am by having to start over again and again when it inevitably gets "stuck"...and kids who have played other PS2 platformers like Jak and Daxter will probably be disappointed by the dull gameplay. Younger kids, or those who have not played the better platformers, would probably still find it enjoyable. Exploring the 3-D environments and picking up colorful gems and jewels always has a certain amount of appeal, but this is definitely a renter, and I lost interest long before my five days were up.

Yes, it does resemble Mario, Frogger's Quest is a challenge

This game is not at all like the Frogger of old. Gamers who are expecting the challenges of trucks and cars squishing the persistant reptile of old should pass on this game. However, Froggers Quest is not easy, but may cause older players to lose interest. We initially purchased the game because we are long time Frogger fans, but I did end up giving the game to the kids. I have not given up on finishing Froggers Quest, but it is a game of coins and gems that kids love to seek out. The enemies are not hard to beat, but the secrets do require a little work to unlock. This game is worth keeping, and will seem similiar to Mario. However if you are an adult with hopes of a very high challenge game that enhances the Frogger of old, pass it to the kids and stick with the brutal semi-trucks that caused your Frog to pant with fear.

Konami never finished it.....

a BIG disappointment.....frogger is practicly impossible to control, the graphics are grainy, I never get headaches from playing a video game but this one will give you a migrain! the extreme jerky movements and the way the view gets thrown off from the slightest odd jump will make you want to smash this game! not to mention the "story" ...all it is ..."once upon a time there was a frog who rescued a princess from some goblins and when she kissed him he turned into a prince" so un-original! also there is only 5-6 hours of game play! and most of this is running around trying to find out what on earth you are supposed to do! but the worst turn off is the errors. this is what I mean by they didn't finish it! you will often find your self stuck in some invisible wall usually the sounds go bonkers, or you wait there until some enemy finishes you off. another one is enemies getting stuck in wood, rock or something so you can't kill them and again the sound goes bonkers. but the worst of all is when the game totally freezes! then you have to re-start your ps2 and of course the game....I gave it 2 stars only because it had some OK game play but it deserves 0.

Not what you expect

I rented this because Frogger was my wife's favoriate game on PS1. We were excited to play this. After about an hour, it was back in the case. This is NOTHING like the PS1 model, it is a direct rip-off of Mario Brothers in 3-D. But it's not even as good as Mario. It's just a frog running around trying to get as many coins as possible.
If you like Mario Brothers, you'll like this. It's a good choice if PS2 is your only system.
If you're looking for what frogger is known for, you'll have to wait until the next one.

Good Game but I've seen better

I know this will date me but I've always loved Frogger since I got my Atri when I was 10 yrs old...but this game gives me a headache. You can never seen where your going and there is no way to freeze the camera angle in one position. You might need to turn around to fight the bad guy but the camera is still facing the other way and you can't see to excape/fight. My husband says I just need to get use to the new stile but I'll take my Atri (or Super Mario Brothers) over this any day.

Frogger is good Family Fun!!!

I bought my husband a PS2 for his bday, and being a child of the 80's, when I saw they had a Frogger game for PS2, I just had to get it(plus it was cheap -). The game is nothing like the original game, but me and my husband (who are both in our early 30's) absolutely loved it. There are some annoying things about the game (mainly camera controls/views), but overall we found it just challenging enough to keep you playing, but not so challenging that you get totally frustrated or need cheat codes or something to play it. Frogger takes you through a fantasy world reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. The levels are colorful and very creative. He searches through these levels (including water, a castle, a river boat, catacombs, etc..) to find the princess who he thinks will kiss him and turn him into a prince. Along the way, he collects coins, gems, magic stones, and fights a variety of bad guys. Many of the characterers are quite humourous, and there are lots of movie references in the game - such as the Cat Dragon, who sounds just like Sean Connery in Dragon Heart. Overall, the game was lots of fun, and a good stress reliever - and at 9.99, I definitely feel like I got my money's worth out of it. Other than the annoying camera controls, I really don't know why so many other people that reviewed this game gave it such low ratings?

Summary:

Pros
- approximately 16 colorful levels to explore.
- suitable for children of all ages.
- good game for stress relief (not overly challenging).
- nice soundtrack.
- cute characters and storyline.
- it's CHEAP! (less than the cost of going to a movie!).

Cons
- Camera views (never seem to be where you want them to be).
- Long hours of playing can give you motion sickness (due to camera controls).
- Some glitches in game - things getting stuck in objects, clipping plane problems, etc..
- May not be challenging enough for serious gamers.
- Some of the dialogue is pretty cheesy.

I think the Pros definitely out-weigh the cons - especially at $...

an embarrassment to sony and to playstation 2

i rented this game when my 11 year old (girl) cousin came over. we both agreed, this game is terrible. and this is from my cousin who is a huge frogger fan and owns every PC frogger game. even though this game is only $$, it isn't worth a penny. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS GAME! here are a list of GREAT games that are also only $$ and are rated "E" for everybody (kid appropriate).

GRAN TURISMO 3 (realistic racing simulator)
PAC MAN WORLD 2 (platformer)
ATV OFF ROAD FURY (ATV off-road racing)
SSX TRICKY (snowboarding racing)
NAMCO MUSEUM (4 classic namco arcade games on one disc)
CRASH BANDICOOT THE WRATH OF CORTEX (warning: very long load times, but the game itself is a good platformer.)

Well, I thought this game would be easier :) But that's not a bad thing. The graphics remind me heavily of the beginning computer games where you could constantly get "stuck" in some impossible situation and had to reboot the game. In Frogger I more than once trapped myself "inside" an open door and could not get out. Similarily the graphics seems to lag when you are moving around fast, so there is definitely some room for improvement. The gameplay itself is pretty fun with frogger being rather cute in his behavior and movements, the cuteness misleads at times when you get stuck and can't figure out how to continue. The store where you can buy items is pretty stupid, it doesn't really help. They should have thought of cooler things to get there. All in all, I think its a good game, but overpriced for what you get, more in the 29.95 range of games.
