Evergrace is a RPG. A bad one though. The medioker graphics the [poor] story the total absence of crativity and fun all lead up to one thing... don't buy this rushed title.

Unfortunately for RPG fans such as myself, the launch of the PS2 did not contain any noteworthy RPG titles. Evergrace, from Agetec (R-Types, R-Type Delta for PSone), is a decent looking game but nothing to really rush out and buy. First of all, the graphics are decent looking but environments and characters are drab and dull looking. The music is so-so. Loading time is horrendous. The control is difficult at first and the camera angles leave a lot to be desired. The gameplay itself is not too bad, it's simple and straight forward and does not require a lot of problem solving. You pretty much go from one place to another and fight enemies and meet a boss of varying difficulty in the end before going on to the next place. One aspect that might entice buyers is that there are two characters who go on their own quest and they each have different places to visit, goals, and enemies to fight (won't give away anything, I have yet to finish playing it). The story lines are actually quite involving and original, there is a comedic atmosphere that may attract some. The best part of the game is the ability to customize and alter your weapons, clothes, and items. Doing this gives secondary functions needed to progress through the game and enhance your characters abilities. This "dressing up" of your gear is highly original and the best thing about this game. As a long time RPG fan, Evergrace leaves a lot to be desired; however, a casual RPG gamer may find this a worthy title to invest in considering the choices available.
It isn't as bad as the other people say

Well, first of all, I originally got Summoner, whichREALLY[wasn't very good]. I ended up buying Evergrace, not expecting much. On the whole, though, it isn't a bad game. You don't really get emotionally involved with your characters, but you DO get caught up in beating the various monsters. I haven't finished it yet, but it's an engaging game, and it has kept my interest.
All in all, a pretty bad game.

I bought this with my PS2 and ended up returning it for Kessen. This was a very good idea.
In its favor, the game has decent controls and makes pretty good use of the analog controller buttons. That's really the only positive thing I can say about it.
Graphics are okay, but certainly not up to the standards set by other releases such as Ridge Racer V, DOA2 and Kessen. The way the trees are rendered as a vertical stick with a couple of rings of texture map around them is annoying.
The enemies do not scale well, going from too easy to too hard too fast. It is too easy to walk off a cliff and die, but there are also cliffs you have to walk off to advance the plot and there is no good way of telling the difference. When left with no other options I found myself saving the game then walking off all the cliffs I could find hoping one would lead to more plot. Saddest thing it, this does work sometimes.
But by far the most annoying aspect of the game, and the one that made me stop playing it, is the camera. There are camera control buttons that don't do anything sane. During boss fights in small spaces you usually don't get to see the boss most of the time. And I'm not just an incompetent player making an excuse for not beating bosses. I've played hundreds of video games and haven't seen a camera this bad since the Xena game for Playstation.
Evergrace is a Surprise!

I found this to be a better game than most people give it credit. The grafics are nice, the overall gameplay is good, controls take a bit of getting used to buy not that bad. It could use some work (i.e. in the equip menu they have the palmira action "seal fire" as "fire slash" or something to that effect) but, other than that and a few other minor things, I liked the game.
Rushed into a PS2 port, this needs more time in the oven

Evergrace is a traditional action/RPG game that suffers because it is one of the first releases for the new PlayStation 2. It is expected to contain high quality graphics and sound, and unfortunately it has neither. From the sort of cheesy leaves falling at the beginning to the low-budget music that plays behind the action, the game looks as if it was a straight port from the base Playstation. And indeed, rumor has it that this is the case.
The storyline is intriguing. You are one of two characters - Sharline or Darius - giving a nice male-female balance to the game. You explore the polygon world as in most RPGs, looking for enemies to kill and gathering up mushrooms and special items. The terrain itself is on the restrictive side, limiting where you can go and what you can see. Often vital items cannot be seen, and monsters will appear within rocks.
Combat is not very exciting, with slow paced action, really stupid computer moves and limited fighting options. Taking a nod from the Diablo 2 gem system, you can find Palmira gems and add them to your weapons and armor.
Add to that horrendous mouth-matching-words problems (and times the spoken message doesn't match the written one on the screen), cheezy videos, an awful font choice for displaying messages, I'd say to set this one aside and give Final Fantasy IX a try. Even without any porting, that is still the best RPG available for the PS series.
Great game. . . If it were for or PS1

Okay, the whacks first then the good stuff.
First whack: The intro-opening movie thing just really needs to go away. It was aweful!! It had very little to do with the story and even less to do with making me want to play the game! From crappy leaves to odd duck looking things to that terrible screeching pseudo-song as the movie goes on (and on and on and on. . .), the intro just needs to be trashed and redone completely.
Second whack: The camera angles are really lousy. Sure, you control the camera, but that's just it; you spend most of your time trying to manipulate the camera to look at the monsters and generally end up getting whacked, yourself. There are areas in the game that are so difficult to navigate woth the odd angles that you invariably end up quitting and coming back to it. Half the time the camera's not even looking in the direction you're running. VERY annoying!
Third whack: The mapping is nice and all, but it is ENTIRELY too easy to fall off a ledge. Sure, it's possible to fall off a cliff in real life, but in real life I don't control my actions with a 3/4 inch button. . . Sneeze and you're history.
Last whack: This is actually a two parter- 1) the words on the screen are only acurate about 60% of the time with the words being spoken. Did we get 2 different translations?!? If so, let's pick 1 and stick to it. . . 2) The attributes given to various armaments in the menu rarely matches what you actually get. It will say you're getting one thing, then you get something totally different. Again, annoying.
Praise: The gameplay is quick- you change weapons with almost every encounter. There are lots of things to buy from the creepy elephant-man shop owner and most of it is upgradeable. The bosses are not ridiculously powerful and the monsters are actually manageable. The game actually allows you to win on ocassion.
The graphics are pretty good and the colors are lively. The male character looks realistic and the female looks almost so, except for the fact that her wrists are like a foot long.
All in all, I would tell you to rent it first. Otherwise I would tell you to buy Legend of Lagaia. . . Except LOL can't recognize the PS2 mem cards. . . Bummer.
SOME GAMES ARE STUPID, BUT THIS ONE IS PRETTY GOOD

When I first started playing "Evergrace" I thought the buttons were confusing, but I got used to them after a while. I found the game to have good graphics. And since I was constantly running in to different monsters and challenges, it kept me interested. Also, having the opportunity to have different and better armor and weapons along with magical powers made me want to keep playing. The plot was a little strange though. Other than that, I found it to be a good game.
The REAL deal

This is perhaps the worst rpg ever written. The combiniation of unoriginal game play, and an absolutely detestable story line your money would be more well spent on .5 pencil lead. Fear not however, if you bought this game rest assure that this WAS a playstation 1 game that was rushed into PS2 service if only to fill the vaccum created by the lack of RPG's in Song's repitore. The only thing sader than is PS1 polygons, is the lack of a clear involving story line. However bad the story is on most RPG's it doesn't seem to matter by the time you find a place to save you are completly encompassed by the plot, the developers of this game must have DELIBERATELY attempted to make sure by the time you got to level 2 you would be using the the cd as a steady, reliable, non-slip drink coaster!
This Game is Horrible
