great graphics but not for 1st-time PS2 gamers

For those of you like me, who were raised on PONG and Atari 2600, this is probably not the best game to start your PS2 experience. Egads. I got so frustrated with it, I tore it out of the unit and threw it across the room. When I get around to prying it out of the drywall, I might try it again. First of all, what the Frac is the objective ? It is not clear what you need to do to get past the first level. The controls are impossible--there's too much on the HUD, the controls are too sensitive and the targets, for the most part, might as well be a parsec away because you hardly ever actually see them. Now, if you are familiar to experienced with ACE Combat or other 'flight simiulator' type games, then, this is probably more your element. Me, I'm a racing gamer; if it has a car in it, I've probably played it. Personally, I'm not impressed with this game and am glad I got it used for practically nothing. Although the graphics are indeed awesome, I'll stick to four tires and a road and will probably unload this game on some other, unsuspecting schmuck at my next garage sale.

So its not easy

Yeah, there are some flaws (can't always save when you'd like, no tutorial missions), but if you like Battlestar Galactica this game is for you. It took me a while to beat the second mission, but thanks to the other reviews here I was ready for that. I just stayed patient, used each attempt to learn something and tried to have fun even when I failed. The game really is fun. I highly recomend it.

Awesome Game for REAL GAMERS.....Quit Whining .....

I just got this game about 2 days ago, and it is just the type of challenge I have been looking for in other PS2 games, but in many cases been sorely dissappointed. I regularly play ACE COMBAT 4 and Star Wars X-WING, so learning the buttons on this game was a piece of cake.

I read a review from one of the gaming magazines where someone complained about the targeting system. I don't know what they were whining about, because if you play games such as ACE COMBAT 4, it's almost the same targeting system. People who play flight sim games should have no problem getting used to the playability.

I'm a veteran of the Colony Wars Series, and it seems like the game engine for Battlestar Galactica is similar if not just an advanced version of the same game engine used in Colony Wars.

This game has beautiful cut-scenes, awesome sound effects, and it's about as close to real as one can get. People complain that it's too hard..... or that there's not enough time to accomplish different mission tasks...... GET A LIFE ALREADY!!!!! If you're in a real air battle, all you have is split seconds to make decisions anyway and you might be 2-3 seconds from death in a real air battle.

The first level is hard, since i keep getting killed at the end when you blow up the asteroid and it's like it follows you, including you in the explosion. But.... it's awesome to me. I like and appreciate the challenge.

Somebody complained that he had a wife and kids to raise and feed. Well, you must not be a true gamer. Quit whining long enough to enjoy the game and you'll see that you're in for a treat.

Anyway....... any flight sim person or person who loves to play any of the Star Wars flight/space sims, will love this game. So, what are you waiting for? Go get your copy today!

Suck it up and buck up!!

Graphics are good and flowing, action is non-stop right from the beginning and storyline is easily followed(provided you get past the first mission). There are no cheat codes, no easy settings and your mistakes will kill everyone. Repeatedly. Quit whining and learn how to fly your viper like the cylon killer you're supposed to be if you want to see more of the unfolding movie that this game is. I've been playing for 4 days off and on, and haven't gotten to the end yet, which is more than I can say for most games I've bought. It's actually refreshing NOT to be able to cheat for once.

Frustrating game

As stated, the graphics in the game are pretty good however there are several flaws with the design of the game that have really turned me off. There is no sort of tutorial section to help you learn about flying and fighting, it simply throws you into the first mission and you are on your own. The levels are extremely challenging but you can be playing successfully on a level for 15 minutes and get killed and have to start all over again. It is pretty true to the original series which is confusing seeing how the game was released to coincide with the new mini-series because the vipers in the game shoot lasers compared to bullets in the series. I love the concept of a Battlestar Galactica game but this one could have been done better. One other thing, I had always wanted to launch from a tube off of the Galactica, which you do on one level but it is all automated, you have no control in launching or landing in a landing bay. I became stuck on a level where you had to shoot ice chunks to keep from hitting the Galactica, I was stuck there for several days became frustrated and haven't played the game in over a week.

Saving your (lame) wingmen so you can save

I was stuck for a long time on the same part in the 1st mission as another rewiewer, where you have to (try and) save your wingmen from dying (right after you blow up the small satellites).

I finally succeeded at getting through that stage by noticing that if you pump up "speed" vs. "power" on the missile tweaking menu, you get more missiles. So, after blowing away the last small satellite, try and turn towards that big asteroid where your wingmen cluster around so that you can get a head-start when the interim movie clears. Then Turbo (note, as we die-hard fans know, that big white button was labled "Turbo" not "Afterburner" in the original series :) over to your (incredibly untalented) wingmen and when you get close enough for missile lock, fire off a full spread.

It seems like if you start annoying the pursuing raiders, this distracts them a little so you have more time to kill them off, even though pushing speed vs. power means multiple missile hits to kill each one. Fire at the ones closest to your wingmen first.

Other notes, once, after the initial missile salvo, I overshot and the raiders were actually shooting at the wingmen from behind me (I was too close to the wingmen). I tried to back off to be able to shoot the raiders when they passed me (too late). Also, that big asteroid really gets in the way sometimes. Try and make sure your initial beeline to the wingmen gets you way to the same side of the asteroid as the wingmen are on. It's worth a slight detour.

After that, there's just a couple more (much easier) things to do before the game offers you the opportunity to save.

Overall: 3 stars, all for nostalgic sounds and graphics! -2 stars for frustration (mainly about the save points as others have mentioned) and I agree with the earlier poster, I would have really liked to be able to launch (why were there three switches AND three buttons required to start the engines in the series, anyway?? :) and land!

On to Mission 2! :)

GC.

Not as hard as others would have you believe.

went through the dreaded rings 3rd try yeesh. ok enough. the game has top notch graphics good voice acting and pretty decent combat controlls its just a shame you cannot configure your controller to your liking but eh... anyway i STRONGLY recommend using a gameshark or codebreaker to hack the game get the viper MKII or better and its then a fair fight with the 1st viper its a little harder then most people are used to (see x-wing vs tie fighter) still Lots of extras all ship models rendered in full 3d glory close to 400 unlockables and most of them are worth it like the Movie Viewer and the galleries oh and the Outtaks rocked!

DONT BUY

I am a big fan of Battlestar Galactica however this game is absolutely terrible it is so rediculasly hard that it is a complete waste of money. If you happen to rent this game you have spent to much. I am actually mad at what a disappointment this game is.

Frustrating and anger-inducing waste of time...

As a gamer since age 9 (when I first saw Asteroids in an arcade) I have played and beaten hundreds of games. Battlestar Galactica is so frustrating that I put it away after 9 attempts to get through level 1! Yes, LEVEL 1! I just stopped caring. Any game that forces you play through the SAME 15 minutes of gameplay every time you die towards the end of a level is a waste of my time. No save points. No mid-mission saves. I could be out making money, or going on a date or playing something that's actually fun and rewarding. What makes me so mad about Galactica is the fact that the graphics/sounds are really well done...that and the fact that I have waited 29 years to fly a Viper in a video game and when I finally do, I want to forget the name Battlestar Galactica altogether. Strictly for the sadists out there. I just finished the game BLACK and found it to be a walk in the park compared to this game....Look for my copy used online.

I was a big fan of the series as a kid and had been looking forward to this for the last few months.

I was a bit worried that as a fan I would be disappointed when I finally got hold of it, but I shouldn't have, this game is cool!!!

So anyone who wants to swoop over a Basestar shoot the hell out of the cylons should grab this and strap their helmet on!
