Fairly disappointing...

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 7

I absolutely LOVED Chrono Trigger on the SNES. However, Chrono Cross seems to ruin the things that made the original Chrono Trigger so good.

First of all, there are 40+ characters. It's nice to have the option of using lots of different skills, but there is NO character development for any but the three main characters. Literally NONE, save for maybe someone saying something about a particular character. It's ridiculous and it definately takes away from the game. CT fans will be disappointed as the original CT was all about the character development.

Second of all, a certain character that had blue hair in the original Chrono Trigger has BLONDE hair now. If you play the game and you've played CT, it really is a travesty. It's like they took a different character and stuck the name on her.

Third of all, dimensional travel is fairly boring and tedious. You have to keep going back to the same place on the map for a long time to get to the other dimension. (There were multiple portals in the original CT so it wasn't as bad.) Also, there are only two dimensions so this is a little boring; both places look almost exactly the same. The time travel in CT was much more interesting.

Fourth of all, the plot is VERY hard to understand. I actually like that you need to play the game a few times through to understand it, but it's NOT good when the game isn't worth playing through for any other reason. I tried to replay it but I couldn't bear it any longer. It's really that tedious and boring. When you finally DO figure out parts of the plot, there are lots of holes, especially with the original CT.

Fifth, the plot is harder to understand if you haven't played CT or Radical Dreamers. I don't believe RD was ever even released in the US so good luck. I'd much rather the RD element was left out CC, personally.

Sixth, the battle system can take a long time to finally understand, and it's really tedious to prepare for battle.

Seventh, the music isn't very good save for two tracks I particularly like. The original CT had great music. Some CC tracks are ANNOYING, like a particular concert that occurs and DOESN'T STOP FOR A LONG TIME. -_-;

There are some good things. The graphics are good, and the game will keep you busy for a little while. It's about moderate difficulty, so pretty much anyone can play it. The New Game+ feature from CT is back, something I think all games should have. Even with all its flaws, CC is still better than a lot of PS1 RPGs out there.

My advice is to rent it first and see if you like it. I definately wouldn't buy this without trying it first (I kinda wish I hadn't bought mine since I couldn't even play it a second time).

BEST RPG EVER MADE!

A must own for every Rpg fan and non-rpg fan. The best game ever made! more then 100 hours of gameplay and more then 42 playable characters!

Fans of the original can embrace the sequel

For those unfamiliar with the original Chrono Trigger game, it was a revolutionary RPG for these reasons: it introduced a unique battle system, was one of the first RPGs to balance character development, plot enhancement, and gameplay, and had graphics which were outstanding relative to the time period.

In this spirit, Square has provided us RPG hungry gamers with a sequel which embodies the best of the original game with the latest and greatest graphics, capabilities, and tweaks.

True to the original game, all of your foes can be seen on the screen. Many gamers familiar with other RPGs will agree that random battles get tedious...and Square took steps to eliminate this by making all the enemies visible, if not always avoidable.

The embraced combo system returns (the ability to have at least two or more characters combine their attacks to wreak havoc), much to my joy, as this was one of the most innovative ideas in RPG history.

Of course, no game is without its flaws...and Chrono Cross is no exception. My primary gripe is that unlike the first Chrono, the character development in this game is poor at best...with over 40 different characters, you don't get to know anyone. This normally wouldn't be a problem, except that Square and the Chrono games especially were known for their character development.

All in all, go buy the game and you probably won't be disappointed.

Lost in Time, especially while playing this game

I truly love this game. This may be Square's finest work on the Playstation thus far. The graphics are extremely gorgeous, rivaling and surpassing those of its predecessor, Final Fantasy 8. From lush, deep jungles to mysterious, crystal clear oceans of mesmerizing blue, this game never fails in the graphics area. What is really spectacular, however, are the battle scenes. The spells and various tech skills are exquisite, to say the least. There is more eye candy in one battle sometimes than in many other games Ive played. Some moves show eclipses of the moon, in which deadly accurate moonbeams shine down on foes with excruciating force, while others are more comical, yet still possessing the overall quality of depth, such as the cute frog prince, who is no less lethal, as he calls up a wave of ocean to smite foes. Lighting effects are very nice as well, what with torches, illuminated doorways and many other light sources being approximated brilliantly. The battle system itself is very easy to get into and learn, if not master. Basically your characters can either do a move from level 1 to 3, 1 being weakest and 3 being strongest, however, in an order to balance out the situation, strong moves often have a lower chance of succeding than the weak moves, which cause little to no damage, versus the strong moves doing up to and beyond five times that much. As you keep attacking, your levels are added to give you an overall power level. Say you do two strong moves, at 3 points each, giving you a total of 6 points, which means now, you can do a skill, or spell from level 1 to 6, if you have that many available. The spells and skills, as well as max power levels go all the way up to 8, 8 of course being quite fantastic moves, usually the summoning of elementals themselves, which takes a bit of patience, but is well worth the effort. The music and sound effects in the game are flawless, as you would expect from a game of this caliber. Whether in the dimly lit sewers under Viper Manor, or the dense jungles of Gaea's Navel, the music does indeed fit perfectly. I really enjoy the foreboding tone of one of the worlds, which if listened to closely, resembles the theme of the prequel, Chrono Trigger. Replayability isnt bad either. With a save option after the final credits have rolled, and the ability to keep most items and spells for a new game, it will help you finish the game the second or third time around a whole lot faster. There are also more features in the second game, like fast forwarding battle or slowing down scenes. You are even given the option at the start of battles to switch out your main charcater for someone else. If played thoroughly, by your third game, you can have all (and I mean all) tne characters available in your party. This is no small task either, as there are literally tons of characters, each with their own different tech skills, and weapons. Also adding to the replayability of the game is the fact that the game has 11 endings, depending on where in the game you are when you best the final boss, you will see a different ending. The key is to beat it after finishing key moments in the game. All in all, this game is a very good example of Square's level of care in making RPG's. I wholeheartedly recommend this for anyone needing a new one to get lost in, or anymore with a few millenia to spend traveling through time.

I first would like to start this review by saying that I have been a gamer from way back when the original Nintendo console first came on the market. That's when I just fell in love with all the outstanding things technoligy today can do. I would also like to say that I have played Chono Trigger and I thought that that was the best game ever. That is until I played this game. This game has it all. Phenominal graphics, a spectacular plot, a beautiful musical score, and fun and exciting new characters. Not to mention some old faces. Now I would like to end this passage by saying that this is a fabulous sequal and everyone who was interested in the original Chrono Trigger, would have a blast playing this one. Thank you for your time.

Chrono Cross, my all-time favorite RPG

In 1995 the highly popular Chrono Trigger debuted on the SNES. Now, five years later, its sequel, Chrono Cross, arrives on the PlayStation. But does it measure up to its predecessor?

Much like Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross has some of the best graphics seen on its system, and its music is the best I've ever heard from a game.

Chrono Cross differs from Chrono Trigger in that, rather than travelling to five different periods in time, you travel in between two parallel worlds. Though that may infer that there is less to explore and do, it is actually the opposite. Chrono Cross offers so many subquests that if someone were to try to accomplish them all, it would take them over 60 hours to complete the game.

This game also has a great battle system. First off, elements, which pretty much take the place of magic, items, and techniques, have a level from 1 - 8. These elements can be attached to a character's "Element Grid," which contains slots for holding elements from levels 1 - 8. For example: an element with a level of 3 can be attached to a level 3 slot on a character's "Element Grid," and when used in battle, it will work normally. But oftentimes you are allowed to adjust an element's positioning on the "Element Grid." The higher it is placed on the "Element Grid" above its normal level, the more powerful it will be; if placed lower than its normal level, it will be weaker, but you will be able to use it sooner in the battle. Battles start each character out with a "Power Level" of zero, but with each successful attack the character's "Power Level" will increase. If a character gets up to a "Power Level" of 3 during a battle, he will be able to use any element on his grid from levels 1 - 3. After the element is used, the character's "Power Level" is subtracted by the level in which that element was attached. Then the character has to move his way up again.

Also, each character and element have a color, and each color has an opposite color. Red is opposite of blue, green is opposite of yellow, and white is opposite of black. If a character has the color red, he will use red elements well, and red elements work great against blue enemies. There is even more. Each time an element is used its color is added to that battle's "Field Effect," which is divided into three parts. If the whole "Field Effect" is changed to one color, elements of that color will become more powerful, while elements of the opposite color will become weaker. Furthermore, there are certain extra powerful elements that can only be used once a player has succeeded in turning the "Field Effect" a solid hue. It sounds extremely complicated, but trust me, once you start playing, it will all seem simple.

Chrono Cross is a great title and my favorite role-playing game of all time. There is little wrong with it, but if I had to pick its worst feature, it would be that some of its 40+ playable characters aren't developed very well and, thus, not likeable. But with that many characters, you're bound to find enough that you like. So I highly recommend this game and doubt that you'll find a better role-playing experience until Final Fantasy IX is released.

Squaresoft does it again.

I'll just be straight forward... if you've played Chrono Trigger, you'll love this game.

Its been a long time since I've played a video game that had a decent story and beautiful graphics and music to go along with it. The Chrono series have a very unqiue story to them... time travel. We're not talking about gettin' in a car with Micheal J Fox, we're talking about some interesting, "what if this could happen in the real world", magical story.

The game starts off in a scene that will be revealed later in the game, you're in control of Serge, the main character of Cross. You also have 2 others joining your party, Kid and a random character... it's different everytime you start the game.

What really makes this game top flight is that if you play it again, under a new quest, you can take different paths and the game will be totally different. There is no right or wrong way either. Squaresoft did a great job in making this game come true (there wasn't a planned sequel at the time of Chrono Trigger). If you're an avid RPG gamer or only like to play a good game once in awhile, Chrono Cross is for you.

A great adventure

Chrono Cross is a wonderful mix of plot and gameplay. I can't think of anything about the game that seriously perturbed me, besides the usual (repetative battle music, loading times...). There are a number of things that make this game stand out from other games.

1)The music is really good. Unfortunately, no matter how good any music is, you get sick of it after listening to it hour after hour. I still don't understand why nobody's picked up on multiple battle anthems (or no battle anthems at all).

2) A unique battle system: I was impressed with the originality of the system. Unlike a lot of other RPG's, your summon elements are very valuable. The trick is getting them to work (I won't explain further...). I always found battles to be very challenging, but always winnable. Also under this category: no random battles!! This allows you to take the game at your own pace. It also prevents what could have been tons of frustration.

3)New Game+: this feature allows you to play the game again starting with the stats you had at the end of the last game. You are also given a couple of handy new toys, one of which allows you to speed the game up (run faster, get through long discussions faster, get battles over faster, etc). I was going to start the game over anyway since there was so much that I had missed the first time around, so this was a great convenience. I've heard you can also find a variety of different endings using this mode.

Those of you who read Stephen King (notably the Talisman and Insomnia) will probably pick up on a couple of parallels in the story. I doubt these are coincidences, but they weren't blatant rip offs, either. The only thing that kinda bugs me about the plot is that Serge never talks, because he is "the silent protagonist who takes on the persona of the player"(according to the booklet). You are hardly given enough dialog options to fulfill this fantasy. Until that's possible, I'd just as soon play a character with some personality. Also, I debated over getting a Strategy guide, and decided against it. I definitely don't regret this decision. If you're reading this, you have access to GameFAQs.com, a great resource for walkthroughs when you're stuck.

Overall, though, this is a great role-playing experience that will have you addicted from the beginning. Fans disappointed with FF8 will find more satisfaction with this one, due to less sterile environments and a well thought out story.

QUITE POSSIBLY THE GREATEST GAME EVER MADE!

This game is one of the best games I've played for N64, Playstation, or Dreamcast. It is definately the best RPG. If you played and liked Final Fantasy 7 you'll love Chrono Cross. With over 30 playable characters, you'll be able to play through the game manuy times and never have the same "party". Only thing I thought was bad was that the bosses were too easy and the game was too short. But, all-in-all BUY THIS GAME!!!!!

Chrono Cross is the Pinnacle of Console RPGs

Chrono Cross does everything right. Forget about all the annoying things in other console RPGs, because they simply don't exist in this masterpiece. Fearing hours and hours of random battles? Not here, you only fight when you choose to fight as enemies can be seen on screen before you engage in battle. Having trouble with a particular boss? Run away and think about strategy - running has a 100% success rate up to and including the final boss. Worried about searching through inventory after battles to heal your party? Forget about it - you can choose to automatically heal at the end of battles with items and spells that you have in stock.

Chrono Cross is truly a gift from the RPG gods, releasing the gamer from the aforementioned shackles that once imprisoned them. The battle system is also particularly sleek and intuitive, allowing you to use any member of your party at any time - as long as your party members have stamina. The graphics are typical SquareSoft, which is to say they are extremely beautiful. The character models in particular are wonderful, and both the pre-rendered and battleground backgrounds are a wonder to behold.

All in all there is only two things really wrong with Chrono Cross - it makes other RPGs seem obsolete and the story seems to drag in places. But those are small complaints in such an amazing game. Here's hoping that SquareSoft continues to follow the amazing precedent they have set with Chrono Cross.
