first off: if you're a fan of chrono trigger, get this game. if you're a fan who's looking for a way to relive the glory of chrono trigger, and possibly meet a couple of Trigger's characters in this game, stay away. Chrono Cross isnt a blunt sequel like some other RPG games out there. TO even make it a sequel, you need to pay close attention and dive deep into detail to find the connections between the two. a few changes here and there and this could be a new RPG all together. Anyway, this game is great. the graphics, the gameplay (although the battles can be easy, and you can run away from every single one. Yes, even the last boss), the story... even the 40+ characters workout good! Any RPG fan who isnt going to cry for the rest of his life that he didnt get to play as Chrono again should check out this game. It has that timeless quality that many games miss. definitley worth your time and money.

Great, but cannot get past disc 1!

Chrono Cross starts off much like its predecessor, with the protagonist Serge living a carefree life in his home village. However, adventure comes his way, and Serge is whisked off into a tale of adventure. The game takes a while to pick up, but when it does, you will be engrossed in it. The music is brilliantly coordinated with the story of the game, and the presentation assures this as a worthy sequel to Chrono Trigger.

There is one problem...
The game freezes!
The disc freezes during a cutscene towards the end of disc 1. Apparently, it's a widespread problem with Greatest Hits copies of Chrono Cross. This doesn't come up until well past 30 hours in the game, so it is hard to test for it. Keep this in mind when buying Chrono Cross.

Good for ppl who havent played Chrono Trigger, however......

This game falls short when it comes as a sequel to the illustrious Chrono Trigger. The weaknesses/strengths with this sequel are as follows:

Story & Characters: No connection is made to Chrono Trigger until well into the game, also very few characters from the original CT are mentioned, or shown. Espeically the sorceror Magus (you do see a passing mention to his real name in a letter to Kid, thats it, o and he may be one of two guys in the game), not too mention they got his sister Schala's face structure and skin color ALL wrong at the end. Also the first ending is quite weak and dumb.
The 40 character roster is ridiculous, having this many characters stresses quantity rather than quality. Many of the 40+ characters have no personality (besides an accent or odd way of speaking) or story or plot threads behind them. Most of the characters in this game have no individuality.
The sory is somewhat confusing (as well as the two Dimensions, see below) as its hard to keep straight what happens between the two nearly-identical worlds.

On Dimensional Travel: The dimensional travel back and forth between worlds would of been great, that is if Square would of put at least a little bit of distinction between the two worlds so they do not look nearly identical (perhaps give different continental shapes as in the first CT). This adds for a lot of confusion when you are completing tasks when going back and forth between worlds.

Levels & Magic: Instead of leveling up (like in normal RPGs) you gain stars for defeating bosses. So the game leaves you wondering if you ever got stronger at all or if you ever will. Also magic is not learned it is assigned by "color". And this gives the game even more of a completist "pokemon" feel (not too mention the 40+ characters) by classifying the characters all by color, again ruining any chance of individuality between characters. About the only individuality characters have are different tech skills.

Sound & Music: The opening, well-orchestrated theme "Scar Of Time" will blow you away. The other music in this game is very well done, some of it being slight remixes or remade versions of music in the original CT (except this time its played with real instruments and not synthesized). There is one point in the game however where you will want to turn down the volume. Although accompanient lacks in some areas (like the acoustic guitar themes) the sound overall is great.

Graphics & Animation: Absolutely breathtaking! The animation for the spells during battle are well detailed and flow very smoothly, this section along with the sound are the game's strong points.

The game for a hardcore CT player (I swear I played Chrono Trigger so much I had every detail memorized) is somewhat below average. For one thing there are too many characters (keeping it at 10 max would of been fine), secondly this game was developed to begin with not as a sequel to CT but rather for a Japanese Satellite System called BS where players in Japan can play together (it was called Radical Dreamers back then), and many of the developers and designers said in interviews it is not a true CT sequel (if we are lucky the loyal CT fans might see a real sequel, we can dream cant we?).

The bottom line is if you never played CT you'll enjoy this game. But if you are like me and were expecting a good sequel to a great game youll be disappointed like me, for some of the many reasons Ive stated above.

THIS IS THE GREATEST GAME IN THE WORLD!

If you liked Chrono Trigger you will love this game. This is one of the best games I have ever played. It has amazing CG that rivals that of legend of Dragoon(another good game). I would suggest you buy this game the day it comes out in America. This is the greatest game ever!

Too Great!

this game is one of the fewest that can make me drop my chin. every moment of this game made me in awe. I marveled at the story, the characters, the battle system, the first was great, this may just be even better.

RPG Fans, buckle up!

Great, but Not a Sequel

Chrono Cross is, in and of itself, a great game. It has good graphics and astounding music, an intricate and yet easy-to-use battle system, and some... er... interesting characters. But as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, quite possibly the best RPG of all time, it comes up short.

There are references, but they almost all come late in the game (though personally I think it is a bit of a reference to have a green-haired man named Glenn). There are references to Crono, Lucca, Marle, Robo, Magus, Schala and possibly Frog. However, all of these are minimal and rather pointless, except for Robo and Lucca's tie to Fate, Lucca's tie to Kid's past, and that whole thing with Schala that was mostly unnecessary and rather upsetting for a Chrono Trigger fan such as myself.

The biggest reference is the world contained in the Sea of Eden/Dead Sea. If you've played Chrono Trigger, you will recognize it. It's a bit of a frightening thought, actually, but if you're the type who gets into the storylines of video games, it'll get you thinking.

The storyline is complicated and a bit confusing, so it's a game that you'll want to play more than once, if only to understand more of the storyline. Instead of travelling through time like Chrono Trigger, you travel between two dimensions that look identical until you enter a specific area. At times, especially when you're looking to head into the Sea of Eden/Dead Sea or trying to locate the Dragons, it becomes difficult to remember which world is which. I recommend writing down the general atmosphere of all the major places in each world so you can prevent travelling back and forth trying to find some place.

Like in Chrono Trigger, there are multiple endings--but the vast majority of people, including myself, got the no-ending ending the first time, and felt ripped off. When it's time to fight the final boss, you might want to consider consulting a guide as to how to get a real ending. Of course, there's always New Game +.

The music is one of the best parts. The song at the beginning, Time's Scar, is breathtaking. Being a violinist I can appreciate the wonderful tonal quality of the violin in that piece. And the ending song, Radical Dreamers, is very beautiful also.

Gameplay is easy, though it gets irritating to switch Elements between different characters later on in the game, especially when you're fighting all the elemental Dragons and have to keep changing your party. And I'll tell you right now the percentages for hitting are, at least in the beginning, entirely inaccurate. It may say you have a 90% shot of hitting but you'll only hit half the time. Fortunately that gets better as the game progresses.

Element placement allows for complicated strategy in the more difficult boss battles, but it's fine to place them without thinking about battles if you are not particularly strategically-minded. One complaint is that it might be TOO easy, but that didn't bother me at all.

There are WAY too many characters. There are two entire families you can get to join your party (though you'll need New Game + to get all of one of them). Fortunately, unlike Chrono Trigger, you can just say no. No, really, you can say no, and most characters will get the message and leave you alone. Most have little or no relevant backstory AND are exceedingly weak so it's pointless to take them (*cough* Mojo *cough*). Finally, characters you'd like to ignore that you actually can!

The storyline alone, being deep and intricate, was enough to keep me going. I recommend this game highly. Chrono Trigger fans will not find it disappointing if they choose to forget for most of the game that this is supposed to be a sequel. And those who've never played Chrono Trigger will miss a few interesting points but nothing vital to the storyline. It is interesting, full of odd little twists and turns, and it's definitely a game you'll want to play again. If you like RPGs, you should play it!

five simple reasons for five well-earned stars

1: the long awaited sequel to chrono trigger.

fact: although even if you haven't played the original, chrono cross is still a very enjoyable game.

2: an absolutely gorgeous soundtrack

fact: my wife would listen to the 2nd owenverworld track while i was working.

3: the best graphics you're likely to see on playstation.

fact: the in-game and computer graphics are extremely close... also, the game has a bright feel to it...very catchy.

4: the best original rpg battle system implemented for years.

fact: every single fight was actually fun. seriously...even though it could be annoying engaging in the fight some- times(after repeated fights in a few instances), the battle itself is still exciting.

5: a very engrossing story.

fact: although it does mention events from the first game, it is in a way like a harry potter novel...go to book four find a story, including back story, that is engrossing and still bears some of the weight of the original.

-much like a good book on a snowy sunday, this game will take you out of your home and to a far off place like no game has for a long while(sorry final fantasy vii and viii). besides final fantasy ix, which has redeemed the series for this sailor, this game is a must have for any fan of rpg's or fantasy novels.

I'll admit, I never played Chrono Trigger. I was weaned on the Playstation Final Fantasy games, and Chrono Cross surpasses them all.

Once again, Square has created characters that are instantly likable (albeit with tremendous speech problems) and thrust them into a story that spans two worlds, both of which rely on a young boy to save them from an evil threat.

The battle system is a departure from the Final Fantasy standard. Your characters depend on stamina points for attacks, both physical and magical. Instead of purchasing or drawing spells, you buy elements. Elements act the same as spells, and come in one of six colors. Each character also has an innate color attached to them. For example: Serge, the main character, has an innate element color of white. Therefore, when he uses white elements, such as Meteorite, the attack will be a little more powerful. Additionally, when attacks a Black elemental character, his white magic causes extra damage, and vice versa. As your character grows in experience, he or she will be able to carry more Elements, making them stronger in battle.

All this adds a huge amount of strategy to the battles. Plus, you see all of the enemies before you're forced to battle them, so you can avoid unwanted encounters. That's a nice change from standard RPGs.

The graphics are outstanding. The colors are bright, and the onscreen character models are finely detailed. The battle screens are impressive as well, with amazing special effects.

One of the best things about this game is the music. Most of the tracks sound like they were recorded with a full orchestra, and the music runs the entire emotional spectrum. For the first week or so I owned the game, I watched the full opening cinema just to hear the great intro theme.

A thousand-word review doesn't begin to do this game justice. With hours of gameplay, 45 possible party members, an engaging and exiting storyline and a great battle system, Chrono Cross is truly a masterpiece. Run along and buy the game, now.

Chrono Cross Square's Conceptual Mesterpiece

Chrono Cross is an excellent game set 20 years after the events of Chrono Trigger. Players find themselves emerced in a world of lush brightly coloured hand drawn and pre-rendered backrounds. This game features an active battle system with elements for magic attacks and a three level scale of attacks from weak to strong. Every time you attack you get to chose level one two or three and the higher the level the stronger the hit and the less likely you are to suscceed. As far as the story Chrono Cross starts off in the Dragonian Fort at Mt. Pyre. Serge the main character has a premonition of killing his friend Kid. He then finda himself in his hometown. After completing an arrand for a friend of his he mysteriously vanishes and appears in an alternate world much like his except that he died 10 years ago at the tender age of 7 by drowning at sea. At first he tries to find out what happened, ... . Overall it's one of the best games I've played in years it. It lives up to Chrono Trigger.

.... Nothing but time to play games and this has been my favorite for over 2 months. The graphics are outstanding. Because it was my first RPG, it took me over 100 hours to finish the game the first time (even with the BradyGames book!) Now I'm on my fourth time through and get more excited each time. Next time I hope to try to get through the entire game using only non-human characters. For beginners like me, it was possible to play the first time through without having to learn all the intricacies of elements, weapon grades, magic levels, and more. I was able to pick them up slowly and easily whenever I was ready. Much less discouragement that way. As I mastered the new techniques, I was able to explain them to my 5-year-old grandson, who understood them much more quickly than I, but who cannot read quite as well. We both love the slow- and fast-motion time controller that becomes available once you finish the game the first time, because it makes the battle & magic graphics that much more spectacular. Another sensational choice you can make is viewing battles in "normal" or "dynamic" mode. Dynamic lets you get up close and personal with your characters and enemies, seeing facial and body features in incredible detail. Because of Chrono Cross, my grandson and I now own 9 SquareSoft games and we look forward to many more. I highly recommend it to both beginning RPG players and experienced also.
