Breath of Fire IV is a run of the mill RPG. There is nothing new or exciting in this game. In fact, for every good thing about it, there seems to be something that is bland and boring. For example, while the graphics are fairly good, the controls and camera angles are poor. While the load times are fairly short, some of the areas you visit are SOOOO BORING (like the town, for example...beyond tedious). The story line is not exactly original, but it does offer an interesting enough journey, however you seem to spend alot of time wandering around waiting for something to happen.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a BAD game, there just doesn't seem to be enough substance to it and it is obviously a sequel, which would account for its lack of originality. My advice would be,unless you are a die-hard series fan, rent it first.
I hope someone's reading this

The Breath of Fire series has always been between average and excellent. It offers you a fun and simple adventure you'll play for hours. And it is simple. Quite simple, at least. It's simple to the point of not knowing what you're supposed to be doing or where you're supposed to be going. That's how it is in this one is. It keeps the simplisity strong but adds more. So there's even more stuff you don't know how to do. It'd be a lot better if it had tutorials, like the Final Fantsy's do. The FF saga has loads of tutorials so you know how to do a lot of stuff. That's why FF conquers BF.
One of the Best Games I have played

Ok First off this was my first game when i bought my playstation 2 and i just thought it kinda looked cool cause i saw it in my gamepro. I didnt expect much but once i got going I couldent stop. You start off with Nina and Cray in the desert and you meet Ryu(Our main Man)while he is indesposed kinda hehe. The grahpics grew on me immidietly and i loved the little emotes above your characters when their nervous and excited. The minigames rocked, especially the fishing. I have played a [bunch] of RPGs and I dont think this one is for beginners. If you are not familiar with the BoF series as I wasent, This will certainly pull you into the BoF Family.
This is a very fun and cool game...

I'd say that this is a very fun and interesting game. The sidequests are good, because it makes the game even longer. The only thing about this game that many people don't like, is the camera settings. People say that they can be very frustrating. The music for this game is great. The themes for the variety of towns is fantastic! The battle system is pretty good too. You can learn different abilities from enemies by gaurding. If the name of the attack appears in blue, then that means it can be learned, but it may take some time to learn it. All the characters in this game are all skilled fighters, so you might want to rotate which ones you'll use. Also, everyone will get the same amount of experince points (EXP) after a battle. Hope this review helped!
To me, this is one of the best games I have ever played! I hope you buy it, becuase you'll love it!

For a PS1 game this rules! Graphics are good (For a PS1 game) loads of spells to learn, hundreds of enemies to beat, good storyline, can carry loads of items, lots of possibiltes and the list goes on! Plus the game is long not a puny 5 level game and that's it! this game lasts! A must have!

... and I must say that it is pretty good. When I first heard about this game, I was all ove the net looking for any information regarding it. When it was released in Japan, I tried holding off for a US release, but a few days later I had the game in my hands. I was thinking "YES! Finally a new sequal!" Anyway, enough about that. Personally, I think that Capcom took out a few elements from this that really made Breath of Fire III shine. First of all the world map. They make it pretty linear as to where you can move don't they? This reminds me of Legend Of Dragoon... but either way, they took some of the fun out of just travelling the world. Second, the characters. While I admit that I like Ryu and Nina(I always have!), the other characters are just...well...boring. They are all really shady characters. That doesn't mean bad or anything, it's just that no one is colored brightly or anything in the WHOLE GAME! It makes the game a bit bland to look at. I also didn't like how the transitional mode for the dragons was the SAME for every single dragon (not to mention there aren't many dragons...). All in all, this is a nice addition to the Breath Of Fire series, but it's not exactly the king of them all. However, even saying that, this is still a must have! What are you waiting for? Buy iy now!
Get this only after the other RPG's

The first half of the game is boring and aimless. You are just searching for someone's sister. The second half is cool. The 2-D sprite animations are the best ever for any game, but unfortunately the 3-D backgrounds are hideous. Much of exploration consists of rotating the camera to see where you're going, with obstacles that serve no purpose other than to block your view. Otherwise, this game is fun. One of the best parts is where you develope and build a village for fairies. I'd say get this game only if you already have the better RPG's currently available: Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross, and Persona 2.

I have been a game for 6 years and RPGs are what I've taken a liking to.The Breath of Fire series has always been Mediocre compared to Final Fantasy Games.I was amazed at Breath of Fire 3's gameplay. This game is about Nina on her quest to find her sister. You take control of Ryu,Cray and other Characters that u find on your Journey. The story is not bad and they make good use of the 2-d sprites. The battle system is REALLY Old-school,but adds traits that spice it up a notch.
I would recommend This game to anyone that liked the past 3 games or is into Lunar:SSSC and waiting for Lunar:EBC Its a nice little RPG that will tie you over until the Good ones come this Christmas
