This was one of the first strategy games I ever tried, and wasn't disappointed. It has an interesting storyline, seemingly based on Tolkien's books. You have a choice of being either controller of the orcs (who have several troll, ogre, and other alliances) or the humans (who have several elf, dwarf, and other alliances). The different races have different technologies, but are similar in most ways. You usually decide your race by personal preference. When you start a campaign, upgrades are few, but as the game progresses, they get more advanced, and thus makes the game more interesting. I gave this game four stars, because though it is a good game, the mouse is hard to control, you can only select nine units at a time, and the units aren't as varied as say, "Age of Empires".
Excellent re-edition of a mythical game

I love this game! This game is the best in the Warcraft saga. The compatibility with Windows 95/98/2000/ME, the posibility of playing with other players around the world in the Blizzard's free Internet service Battle.net, and the inclusion of the original game (Tides of Darkness) and the expansion (Beyond the Dark Portal) makes it the best game of all the Warcrafts. But wait for Warcraft III. It will be the best strategy game of all.
Classic Blizzard at its best

This is one of the games I grew up on. Blizzard's masterpiece WarCraft 2 took what its predecessor started and moved forward in the genre. This particular iteration of the game comes with the expansion pack for WarCraft 2 as well as online play via Blizzard's Battle.net. If you are a fan of RTS(real time strategy) and for some reason have never played this game you should.

This game could do alot better than it really did. It takes way to long to build something or to train something. But it has a good storyline where its humans against orcs. I do enjoy watching them battle it out and ending in a gory death. The land isnt detailed enough. What this game lacks is details.
An old classic which is still playable even now.

I first played warcraft 2 four years ago, and found it to be one of the most engrossing and enjoyable RTS games, alongside Age of Empires.
While it seems dated now, it is also extremely playable, and at times even challenging. The expansion levels are good, although sometimes it blows if your hero character dies, because then you suffer an automatic defeat. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often to me, since I keep my heroes well back from the action.
Collecting gold and improving your units is still as enjoyable as ever, and there are a number of ways in which you can attack an enemies base: contrary to some views, Warcraft 2 is NOT simply a "rush-attack" game. SOME of the levels in the original game can be defeated using the rush strategy, but the expansion levels are harder, and you have to try different tactics. Basically, I found the expansion levels to be very similar to playing the custom scenarios, in that the enemy attacks more, has multiple bases, and can usually only be effectively stopped by building a series of Guard Towers and Cannon Towers to protect your base.
I have no hesitation in giving this game five stars. If you're the type of person who likes both action and strategy, then buy this.

I think this a great game because: 1. You can choose what you want to be (org, human) 2. The game has a plot and is relatively long and difficult 3. You can play against real people on line or you could play your freinds threw a phone line
Great Title only Starcraft beats it in the RTS world

Great game to beginners of RTS. This is how I first started my RTS playing and I can say now that without this great game I would probably never have gotten into RTS. But there is some downsides to this game. Its graphics were superior for its time but now days doesnt look like anything special. The two species that blow each other away are very similar which takes some of the fun out of it. Otherwise this game is pretty good.
you'll love this game!!!!!

This game has definitely been around for awhile, but there's a reason it's still played. It's fun! The interface is easy to use, and the 'tech tree' aspect is fairly simple so that even people who haven't played other rts games should have to trouble learning it.
There are a couple of downsides to this game, though in my opinion they aren't much of an issue. One is of course that the graphics are definitely aging and nothing spectacular. It's nice to be able to quickly recognize your units so that you can make the best use of them (high detail can get in the way of that) but don't expect the graphics to wow you. Also, this game runs on a 2D engine, rather than the 3D engine that more recent games are using.
Secondly is that I wasn't incredibly impressed by the campaigns. They tend to get a little repetitive, so most of the time I find myself just playing a custom game.
Another similar game I might recommend instead of this one would be Starcraft. The graphics are slightly better, and the game is just as interesting. Then of course there is Warcraft III out now, which has a 3D engine and a couple of additional races besides human and orc. Aside from the things I mentioned, this game really is very good. I've been playing it for years and haven't gotten tired of it yet!
want to play the game
