Tomb Raiders satisfied but not sated.

For all of us who have explored thru lara all the hidden places in the world, this game will tease you sweet spots over and over again, but this is only the beginning. Having played all 7 TR's , i rate this game at a four due to the fact, the puzzles are not as challenging as tomb raider "REVELATION"( which is the best!), there is not underlying dangers at every turn, and the most important thing, its to d--- short!
Only 8 main story line levels, and where are the sharks, alligator, scorpions, hawks, poison darts and multiple weapon carry capacity. this new lara looks, okay, but not the venoumous girl heroine we all grew to love. If your just starting the treasure searching adventures, this is a good way to begin, but for us TOMB RAIDERS, we still need more Eidos. Stop holding laura back, and give back the 20 some levels for a non-stop extravaganza of gaming and teasers. Overall, i was pleased after that TR 6 Ps2 farce, but dont believe for a minute i will settle for LeGend.......... its just the beginning.

Buy it, but play TR1, 2, lost artifact, chronicles and REVELATION and experience the bombshell plights of Lara........

An appropriate title

First off, let's face a horrible fact: since about the second Tomb Raider game, the series has just plain sucked. Fortunately, with some key personnel back on board, the folks at Crystal Dynamics and Eidos have put together Tomb Raider Legend, a game that's much more true to what made the series actually attractive in the first place.

Of course, Lara Croft is back as the well-endowed and athletic protagonist, and this time she's going to delve into a mystery that involves her parents, long lost friends, and plenty of ancient ruins to explore through.

Unlike past Tomb Raider games, Legend goes back to its roots with a healthy does of exploration and puzzle-solving. You'll still use your dual pistols, complete with infinite ammo, to take out plenty of bad guys throughout the game, but the killing of various wildlife is pretty much gone. There will be a leopard or an attack dog to kill every once in a while, but mostly you're going to be fighting various commandos that also want whatever Lara's looking for in those ruins.

Combat is much more stylish than in the earlier games. Lara can still flip, dive, and roll while shooting, but now she's got even more acrobatic moves. Charge an enemy and slide at them while shooting, and you'll pop them up into the air, ragdoll-physics-style, and keep shooting them. Jump at an enemy and then jump again once your feet reach their face, and Lara will do a graceful, slow motion backflip off of the guy's head while shooting him simultaneously. We've seen this kind of stuff in games before, but the delivery here is very satisfying. And Lara isn't just limited to pistols; she can carry very powerful grenades, and she can carry an extra, limited ammo weapon on her back, like an assault rifle, grenade launcher, or shotgun.

Lara's got plenty of moves she can employ even when her guns are safely in their holsters. When it comes to acrobatic moves, Tomb Raider Legend has picked it up habits once again from the Prince of Persia series of games (the Tomb Raider games have borrowed plenty of platforming elements from the original Prince of Persia games from the late '80s and early '90s). Lara moves gracefully as she hops, climbs, flips, and shimmies around. The animations are great, and the situations Lara gets into can get intense. There are a few dramatically scripted sequences, complete with a "tap this button right now or Lara gets crushed or falls to her death" element, which will keep you on your toes. Some Tomb Raider purists might scoff at these part-Dragon's Lair, part-Shenmue moments, but I think it's a good way to make sure that players are paying attention to the action at all times, even if it's during a cutscene.

Mixed in with the platforming and action elements are some new sequences on a motorcycle. Although Lara can shoot from the bike, you will find quickly that you really have to watch the path in front of you. Every bump against the wall or a rock costs you plenty of health, so watch the road! Well, in this case, watch the dirt path. These sequences are kind of fun but leave something to be desired, especially the very, very short motorcycle sequence in Tokyo.

Most of Tomb Raider Legend's difficulty comes from the puzzles that are laid out in many of the ruins. Combat is usually pretty easy since everyone but Lara is a terrible shot, and most of your enemies stand still while you're flying around the room, and the controls are pretty sharp and easy to get used to. That leaves actually figuring out what to do when the game presents a puzzle, and the first major one will test your logic skills right from the start. Sure, Lara has some crazy binoculars that can "scan" items like what we saw in Metroid Prime, but the game still doesn't tell you how to solve anything. You'll have to figure them out for yourself.

The addition of a grappling hook makes for some interesting gameplay in Legend. You'll need to use it to pull things towards you, smash things open, pull yourself towards something else, or even swing from the ceiling like Indiana Jones on his whip. That last bit only happens in specific spots, though, so you can't just use it to go all Tarzan to escape an area.

While the developers seem to have tried to make sure that there aren't any major frame rate issues that pop up in mid-jump or during combat, it's a little disconcerting having the game slow down significantly just because you decided to swing the camera around a bit.

The locales you'll be visiting in Legend range from the Ghana rainforests to Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Tokyo, and even Peru. The developers have done a great job mixing up the pacing, sending you back into ruins just before you get tired of shimmying around the edge on a Tokyo skyscraper (and vice versa). While Lara's adventure this time around is pretty short, the exploration elements, great visuals that the Xbox 360 can produce, and even the surprisingly interesting story all come together to make a pretty solid game anyway. Those who aren't big on finding hidden bonus items or replaying levels in a "time attack" mode might find that the price is too high to pay for six to eight hours of gameplay, but there's plenty here to satisfy both those who like to rent or buy their games.

As a fan of the Tomb Raider games, I have the whole collection, and yes there are some major disappointments in the series that have made players turn away from the series in the past (the ones that come to mind are TR: Chronicles & TR Angel of Darkness) while each one had their moments of enjoyability, they weren't "true" Tomb Raider Games to me, but with Tomb Raider: Legend, the writers of the game seemed to have gone back to the concept of Tomb Raider and started it anew.

Now I know that previous reviewers have made comments concerning the shortness of the game. True, the game is shorter than the original, but the graphics seem to make up for it. I mean hey...Laura looks almost human in this game, so when you think about it, it kinda balances everything out.

Another upside of the game is that there is something specific that she is after that we the players know about from the onset of the game, instead of us learning at some point halfway through what it is she is after.

She is after the fragments of a sword that may or may not be some version of Excalibur, which will help her a great deal at a later point of the game, and while she is doing that, she is also exploring the very reason she is doing what she is doing and what it was that really killed her parents, and how her parents deaths several years ago are connected with what she is doing in the present.

Of course a few changes that players of the classic games need to get used to are the different controls...well to be sure, certain controls in the older games have been deemed unnecessary in the new flow of the game (to me the side stepping or the lack thereof isn't a major factor). Another thing that players of the classic games need to get used to is that when you move an object (like a crate), it's not on a set track any more; if Laura sways while moving the crate, the crate sways with her.

Is it different from the previous games? Certainly.

Does the shorterness of the game make it any less enjoyable? No.

Does the different controls take away from the experience? Not to me.

Do the better graphics add to the experience of the game? When you see Laura rise up out of a pool of water, and actually see little droplets of water running down her face, the individual strands of hair blowing in the wind, you tell me.

So forget about the changes in the game, and enjoy it for what it is, while it's not like the original game, I don't think it's going to go the forgotten road of "Angel of Darkness" and "Chronicles".

I am a die hard TR fan. Own every game ever made. I couldn't wait for this game to come out and paid the price. I was so disappointed with this. This is not the Tomb Raider I have loved so much. I guess the familiarity from the other games is one of the things I enjoyed the most. There is no familiarity to this game except she looks like Lara Croft. What a jip this game is. It's obvious that this wasn't created by the original people, just another one of those games that bore me. I won't comment on the details as other reviewers have done that already. Anyway, my review would be too lengthy if I did. I know others were so disappointed in Angel of Darkness but in my opinion it was a heck of alot better than this mess. Lara was unique in the older games, in this one she is just another robotic clone of the rest of the stiff shut'em ups.

Best in the TR series

Well let me start by telling you guys that i have never been a sort of TR fan all these years with an exception you can figure out easily.Ya right! The TR Legend. Well i'm a gamer with a mixed taste when it comes to gaming from action-adventure,FPS's to RPG's like Final Fantasy.

Now as per the review goes, lets get 5-6 yrs back when i played TR3,my first game in the series,i kinda liked it for it's new ways to interact with the environment with totally new concept and it's awesome graphics for that time. After that i tried out the TR-Revelation & Chronicles as well.I never played them again as they never were so better if good but again i also came to know what the TR games are all about. But after the release of TR AOD,i was greatly disappointed by the way the whole plot was put together and presented before us for it was quite different from the originals and so i never played it more than 2-3 hrs for all it's crappy controls & bore factor it had in it.Though it had a lot better graphics,it failed to please the fans. Then comes the latest installment in the TR series, ya thats true the "TR Legend" which i played and completed recently.

Now if you ask me i'll say it's an awesome game and the best in the series till date the franchise has to offer. It's a great game with a good replay value (7/10)for it has an awesome in game texture detail throughout with lara's polygon increased model which looks better than ever and realistic at the same time. Apart from it the in game effects are so realistic looking, from the shadows generated to the breath coming out from lara's mouth when it's cold & the smoke coming out from her pistols, to the water effects for when lara comes out of the water she actually looks wet if you take a closer look at her body.

The controls have been really improved upon the previous installment. As per the game play is concerned, this sequal has an all new combat system, interaction with the environment with a lot of new features and techniques a player can use to survive the deadly traps & to proceed further, there are a lot of new puzzles to solve as were always there in the older games of the series but with an exception that these puzzles will take some hack of your time leaving you to think like WoW !boy am i stuck, what to do now.

The graphics are a lot stunning when compared to the last game in the series (9/10 for the PS2)if not the best in the gaming industry. There is a new slow-motion feature in between the combat sequences which looks just wonderful and apart from it an all new vehicle driving portions have been introduced within the game in which lara can drive bikes which ofcourse you can control. It has a great background music too which fits right with the environment and changes with the gameplay which gives the sound a solid (9/10). Right now i have played the PS2 version of the game and in short i'll conclude- this game is a mix of Prince of Persia, God of War with all it's what we call mini games & of course the TR series keeping the essence and basic idea of the originals at the same time.

The only thing it lacks in is the total length of the game which is really short with just around 7-10 hrs of gameplay, damn! which is why i have given (4/5) on the fun part which also effects the overall gameplay so again (4/5).

I would like to recommend it to anybody even the starters to the TR series.Go and get it before the stocks go empty. At last ahem! sorry for this long speech and well! for the TR fans, what to say guys, they know better than anyone else.

What!??? you're still here? damn! just don't sit here watching my review.....what the! i mean, why not better go to u're nearest game store nowwww and get the "LEGEND" man.

Bad engines ruin games

I can't understand why this series is so popular -- I guess just because the main character is a buxom woman with guns. Based on its wild popularity, I have tried to play several installments of this franchise. They all suffer from terrible engines. This one, at least, has abandoned the engine of the PS1 installments, which has a horribly counterintuitive movement system. This one is more natural, but the camera angles are awful and make it hard to perform any real-time actions. The puzzles -- so far as I got -- were OK. The graphics were pretty good. But there are too many types of controls. I stopped playing when I repeatedly died because I had no idea what button to press to take a particular action. A good game engine should have intuitive controls, and the difficulty should grow out of solving puzzles or perfecting movement. This one mostly just required memorizing lots of buttons that were only used intermittently. BTW this game was best when it was trying to imitate Prince of Persia. But that game has a better story, better controls, and better voice characterizations.

I love the game it' awesome the whole gun thing and Lara Croft is sorta pretty,But the way you push a crate is hard the targeting is difficult. When she tosses a grenade you normally look up to throw higher ,but instead of going farther it falls near her causing her to take damage. Also when you look up and try to use her cable thing it's hard to attach it to your target. Other then that good game should have been longer ,but it's good for a third person shooter.
