What a pleasant surprise!

I'm not entirely blown away, but for the price it was just perfect. I had my doubts when I first bought it, but when I started playing, the experience of flying a starship was awesome. The learning curve is a little steep and I would of liked maybe a map of the sector that I was in, but hey that's okay. It is easily forgivable considering the price. Ol' Captian Kirk lends in his voice to narrate, but to me he doesn't sound too motivated, as if he was reading out of a book to himself. I would of love to be able to explore stars and nebulas more as well as blow other ships up, and that sort of happens, but not to the extent that I would of like it to be. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of the game, the price is outstanding because I believe we have gotten more than we actually paid for, and this is a perfect game for any Star Trek fan. If this is what we get for the Playstation 2, I can't wait for Star Trek: Legacy to come out on PC and Xbox 360. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with this game.

SCF - Arcade Style

Bethesda Softworks provided a huge variety of starships to choose from and fight against, and the game appears to have extended playability, meaning that even if you beat the solo player modes, you can come back for more.
I picked this title up and I have gotten past the `Enterprise' era. The controls of this game are rough and awkward, with missions requiring that you do multiple things at one time. Steering while using sensors, steering while using sensors to find the enemy to shoot. Steering while using sensors and trying to fumble for the weapons toggle. I guess my only gripe for this game that there is too much reliance on sensors in the game. The developers packed as much realism in to the game as they could, including a limited 3D playing surface requiring you to pilot your starship above and below some objects.

The game includes a dynamic camera system that zooms in and out depending on the action and the extent of your ship's sensor range. While this can be nice in the effect that it gives you a greater field of view, it can turn in to a pain in the buttisimo as your ship can be hard to see.
The only voice talent we see provided in this game is William Shatner, lending his famous voice for cut-scenes with what seems to be half-hearted script readings. The game would have benefited more from having era-Captains (Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, and Janeway) reading their own parts. At the very least, it would have improved the atmosphere of an already good game.

One other improvement I would have included, had I been on the development team, would have been a two player cooperative mode, allowing for one person to control the movement of the ship & power allocation, and the other to control sensors and weapons.

I recommend this game for Star Trek fans. Non-fans may or may not enjoy this offering from the Star Trek Universe.

I played this game for a few hours and the awkward controls sent me to bed that night with a numb arm and outrageous pain in my shoulder. I thought maybe it was something else, and tried again.... This game looks nice, but is actually a Klingon Pain Stick cleverly disguised as a video game.

I had no choice but to stop playing and throw it away. It was either that or end up in doctor's office. REALLY too bad, I was very, very much looking forward to a good Star Trek based PS2 game but sadly this was not it.

Star Trek Encounters game was fun to play since it also had two-player capability. I did not like the fact I could not save at key points but it did let you go back if you lost. OK not the best but more fun in two-player mode.

Sweet!

This game has so many good things going for it. One of my favorite is the two dimensional three dimensions. Rather than making the game three dimensional where it is hard to orient oneself on a small screen they made the game two dimensional but with three planes. So while there are still three dimensions you get the ease of use of two dimensions!
I would recommend this one much more than it's upgrade Star Trek: Conquest since it has more ships and has creative challenges.

Not half bad!

I bought this game a few days ago and at first I was disappointed. The graphics from the get-go are obviously pretty good, but the controls were very awkward for me. I have never really played a game from this top-down 3D perspective before. And then there are the famous rings... All you have to do is two things. One: as quickly as you can when you get control of your ship is to quickly transfer full power to the engines to acquire maximum speed from the starting point. At the same time you need to be accelerating and steering the ship towards the first ring. Two: you can not, I mean can not, miss any of the rings. You have to stay accelerating the whole time. If you stop or have to turn around to go through a ring you missed, chances are you will fail the mission and have to restart the rings over again. In order to successfully accomplish those two points, you have to be used to the control scheme for steering and changing altitude on the fly (watch those little blue lines to see whether you need to raise or lower your altitude in order to pass through each ring successfully). It only took me a handful of times to figure this out thank goodness. But shortly after you get past the rings, you start fighting other enemy ships and let me tell you it's a blast! The game went from kind-of boring and slightly frustrating to immediately fun to play! For the price I paid for this game, it looks well worth it. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it and I only recommend it for Star Trek fans. It is a budget title after all and it shows. It's not a real dramatic and intense game as far as music and cinematics go. But the ship-to-ship battles are quite fun. Keep in mind though that I have only just beaten the first mission in the Enterprise era. I am only beginning but am looking forward to more missions. I do agree with one of the reviews on here to take this game is small doses in order to not become overly frustrated. Put it in, beat a mission, turn it off and change games. Later on, rinse and repeat. Also, others are right about ol' Shatner and his lack of enthusiasm when he read his lines. He should have read his lines like he did in the original series when he played Captain Kirk. It would have definitely made it more interesting to say the least. =) Or as one suggested, have all the captains voice their own series. Overall, this game is pretty good for the price...speaking from the perspective of a Trek fan.

This game has a co-op mode!

Want to play co-op trek with a friend? Play the Onslaught mode. You each fly your own NX-01 onscreen. (No split screen) One has a green targeting beam and the other has an orange targeting beam. You can fire phasers, photon torpedoes, use mines as weapons against Xindi, and after a few waves, you fight against Klingons, a few more waves, you fight the Romulans! It is like a 2d arcade scroller. It is a lot of fun. You can play Onslaught mode by
yourself too. Yes the missions are difficult,
read the manual to learn ship control, go online for a FAQ on the mission levels to help
you. No game is perfect. Practice your ship control on the head to head level. Even if you still can't beat any mission, you can play the
arcade style Onslaught mode and go for a high
score ranking. I am not a great player yet I
already have a minimum ranking after just one days play. At this price the game is worth it
for the Onslaught mode! And if you want to fly
the movie enterprise and the next generation
enterprise, you can! Just play Battlefest mode
and when your NX-01 is destroyed you next play
movie enterprise, and when that is gone, you play the next gen enterprise. And you never have to bother with the missions to do any of this.
If you can accept these limitations, there is
quick arcade action to be enjoyed for a cheap price! There are power ups like invincibility, cloak, unlimited phasers, double damage, torpedo ammo, mine ammo, rapid fire torpedoes, I have always wanted a fun trek game, you get to captain your own starship and fire phasers
and photons and fight klingons and romulans.

Response to the game not loading...

To all those people having problems of the game not loading with the "disc read error": It is your PS2, not the game! The "blue" discs are in regular CD-ROM format; The "silver" discs are in DVD-ROM format. The Playstation 2 has a known fault of not reading a certain format over extended use of the system or improper shut down procedures. For instance, do not switch off the main power before holding the reset button to go into standby mode: It is the most common cause of the system not reading certain formats if it is not shut down properly. Since "blue" discs are rarely made anymore, most consumers choose to ignore the problem. It can be fixed, however, with a few tweaks of the laser or a laser replacement, but it can be costly (and probably not practical because you can buy a new PS2 for the price of the repair). Trust me, I used to repair these same problems for a living. It was one of the PS2's major faults that was never resolved because of SONY's greediness. They want you to give them money for the repair to make up for the losses made during manufacturing of the PS2 and now the PS3. Anyway, I've gone on long enough. Before returning the game to the store, try it in someone else's PS2 to see if it works. If it doesn't, then that other PS2 is bad too. Like I said, very common problem! Hope this answers some concerns.

Oh, the game is pretty cool.

pretty good.

Do a quick search on the internet, or through the rest of the reviews here, and you'll see this game has a high failure rate. The game comes on a blue CD instead of a silver DVD to save a few cents. This alone should not cause it to fail, but it does. My PS2 will not read the disc at all, but reads all other blue CD's just fine. Many others have had the same problem. Bethesda tech support tells you to turn your PS2 on its side, or upside down to get it to work. If that fails, they tell you to keep swapping the game out until you get one to work. Don't take my word for it though, check out their forums: [....]

All this is not worth it for the horrible reviews the game gets when it does work. Tech support was useless at resolving my problem, or in helping me in any way. They also don't seem to know the difference between a CD and a DVD, and think "older" PS2's can't play blue CD discs, which they can. Avoid this game.
