I picked up this game on Oct 4th. My first impressions are pretty good. The graphics are good for a PS2 game. The music is very well done and gives you the Star Trek feel. The game spans the 40 years of Star Trek and it includes all the TV shows of Trek. The game is narrated by non other than William Shatner. The episode mode starts off in the Enterprise era where you have to take the ship on training missions before you proceed in the game. The further you go along in the game, the more ships and arenas (ie DS9 backdrop, Jupiter Station scene) from other shows you unlock. There is also a skirmish mode where you can fight one on one with the computer or another player. This is an arcade style shoot em up game which can be challenging at times. I recommend this game for any Trek fan or anyone who like shoot em up games.

Yes, yes, we have all heard the same thing about this game. The flying through the ring levels are extremely frustrating. I know i have sat through this game and wanted to put my controller through the screen, or even eject the disk and frisbee it out the window, but im glad i didnt. For the price of this game you cant beat it, not to mention that its graphics and simplicity are far better than any of the previous star trek console games. Plus you get play quick skirmish mode and use any ship you want to play as and fight against any enemy you want(mind you that you must unlock them first), which i why i kept playing the game, just to unlock the ships. This game gives you alot for a cheap price. You get to command at least 7 different type of federation starships against 3 different type of alien ships per race. Like the Jem'hadar fighter, cruiser, and battleship. There are also the Romulans, Klingons, Xindu, Cardassians, Kazon, and the Borg, all with 3 ships in there fleet. You also fight against the Orion raiders and team up with Species 8472. You cant beat that for around $20 bucks. So even if flying through rings or scaning for warp trails may seem a little frustrating, but by the time you unlock all the ships, it will be well worth it when you play them in skirmish mode.

Yes, I hate the rings, I hate the races. But it's only really intolerable in one level, "The Chase" in the Voyager section. It's also slow to load.
But other than that, this was a huge bargain for $15! I felt it really captured the spirit of Trek, and I found most of the missions very enjoyable. I've put a lot of hours into the regular "story" levels, and there's still so much replay value with the different types of skirmishes. It's MORE than enough for this 41 year old Trek fan and casual gamer.
That said, if it wasn't Trek, if they weren't Trek ships, I probably would not have enjoyed it nearly as much, and I'm sure I would have walked away after 2 hours of trying to beat "The Chase". Life is short. But I really want to play the Next Gen Movies "Sovereign" class levels, so I kept at it.
If there's a sequel (unlikely), I'll buy it. It's certainly NOT "Starfleet Command", but it just about captures that feeling for me from the comfort of my couch rather than my PC.
One star off of "Fun" for.... "THE CHASE"!!! ugh!

Great game from the music to the graphics. The 3 multiplayer modes were surprisingly fun to play (Yes, three). First is called head-to-head meaning one ship vs one ship with frag limits you set. Second battle mode is (Three different classes of ships) vs (Three different classes of ships) first one to destroy all three ships wins. You unlock ships from playing the episodes (Ex. ships from Federation, Romulan, Cardasian, Klingon, Xindi & More). Third Mode is to see how many waves of ships can you survive against until you die. The Episodes are well done and don't let the word arcade scare you even Grand Tourismo 3A had an arcade mode. WOW! This game has been fun. Now, that the Glowing endorsement is done the negatives. One the transporting is difficult and sometimes impossible to due to the camera angles causing a person to fail a mission time and time again while waiting for the game to cycle to Away Team. There is a learning curve like with flying and firing weapons but given practice this game becomes fun quickly (even flying the Defiant is fun I got the chance to blow up a Romulan war bird with it, what fun).

ok i love star trek, i admit it ok lets move on shall we?.. ok then this game is Hard i am warning you all this is one toughie (unless you have a cheat device) controls are awkward but interesting. (ok ok review) you begin the game with the NX-01 yes archers ship and its not bad but the souvern class (think Enterprise E Alternate) and wham bigtime fair sapce arcade style combat but until you are crafty enough to beat the whole game via a wide variety of episodes (star trek, Voyager, Next Generation, Enterprise, and a sprinkle of the movies plus Deep Space 9 and its unlockable and usable!) yes i agree somewhat with the other reviewers that yes the rings are Hard but not by any stretch impossible like most of them say. it just takes a little time and even more tolerance because you will miss one ring and have to redo the whole course ack! but it isnt impossible my friend picked up the controller not even a ps2 owner and beat the rings episode on the 5th try! Spectacular Graphics, Wicked ship list to choose from from the old enterprise on through the borg romulans and even the E Alternate this is a Must Have for anyone out there that Enjoyed the Star Control Games!
Pros: Great graphics, Tons of selectable ships, many episodes, alternate timeline plot
Cons: horrible Controls take Tons of getting used to either you will or will not. Must beat the game (or skirmish mode high score and enter the name 4jstudios and bing get it all) to unlock everything which can be painful and the save system leaves a bit to be desired control problems make this game lose 2 stars.
Many technicalities forces the game to not follow the series very well

Since I started Star Trek gaming I've always wanted to fly the big ships. The SFC series allowed me to do this, but it wasn't in three dimensions, as space is in reality. So you can imagine how excited I was to find out about this game. Unfortunately I was very disappointed even though I was able to move around in three dimensions. I think Bethesda just doesn't know what people want anymore. The Enterprise missions did not resemble anything that happened in the series. For some reason the Xindi Reptilian is the most powerful Xindi ship in the game. The Aquatics had the best ships, but were left out completely. In stead, they used Xindi Arboreal cruisers. The Arboreal are not warriors and their ships are poorly armed, why they were chosen to contribute to a clearly shooter game is beyond me. The Genesis mission hardly resembled the movie. For some reason the people at Bethesda think that following invisible trails is fun because there are at least two missions like that. For some reason the warp trail zigzag. Zigzagging is not the best idea when traveling faster than light, and I'm pretty sure they established that in the show. The intro movies cannot be skipped, which would be fine if they were interesting or exciting but they're not. Every time you lose and have to restart from a checkpoint, you have to watch the movie again. The Klingon Vor'cha class does not belong in the TOS section of the game, but for some reason it is there. The training mission (the first mission) is both annoying and unnecessary. For some reason the Klingons are the second weakest race in the game. Even the Cardassians are stronger, even though the Klingons nearly conquered the Cardassian Empire in Deep Space 9. Most of the TNG missions are tolerable, but none are really that fun. The best missions are the Deep Space 9 missions, which can be expected for a shooting game, because the second half of Deep Space 9 was all about the war with the Dominion. Unfortunately there are only two of the DS9 missions. One mission is mostly played as Deep Space 9, which is great until you spend literally eight minutes just shooting asteroids that are only coming from one direction. The only thing they seemed to get right is the Defiant. The Federations only real battleship should be the best Federation ship in the game, and it is. I managed to quadruple Kirk's high score in onslaught with the Defiant more than once. I couldn't even come close with any of the other ships. The use of mines in the game is both annoying and unnecessary. They take at least half of your energy supply, and mines were never used in dogfights in the show. They were only used in large fields to protect planets or the wormhole in Deep Space 9. Furthermore, I don not understand why the Defiant shoots photon torpedoes instead of quantum torpedoes, why the NX-01 has phasers instead of phase cannons, why the Cardassians are harder to beat than the Klingons, Borg, Species 8472, and Romulans. The Cardassian, Romulan, and Borg ships are very confusing. The Cardassian fighter is something that Bethesda came up with, the cruiser barley resembles the cruisers seen in the show, and the freighters are apparently more powerful than the cruisers. The Romulan "Defender" is simply a Warbird from the original show and the "Raptor" is an exact copy of the Warbird from TNG only smaller. So you are essentially fighting three generations of Romulan Warbirds. Bethesda got the Borg sphere correct, but a Borg Tactical Cube is less formidable than the standard Borg Cube. Lastly, one of the Voyager missions is almost an exact copy of an episode taken from TNG. If they wanted to have that specific mission, for what ever reason, they should have at least put it in the correct series. It does not make sense for that mission to be in Voyager. It is based off the episode of TNG where Romulans, Humans, Cardassians, and Klingons are racing around the quadrant collecting DNA samples to unlock some sort of ancient secret, which turns out being the source of all life in the Milky Way Galaxy. This race is between the Kazon and Voyager in the game. Voyager is just trying to get home, and the Kazon probably thought it was a weapon as the Klingons did in the show. Any intelligence Voyager would have had on the secret would have come from the Kazon, so for Voyager to be wasting time finding some sort of ancient weapon does not make much sense.
To be honest Onslaught is the most fun function of the game. But Onslaught isn't fun just being able to use the old NX ships. So you have to play the missions in order to unlock ships to make it more fun. I would suggest waiting for the game to go on some sort of sale before you buy it. Don't rent it because it would be a waste of money. The Enterprise and Original Series missions need to be played in small doses or you will want to put your controller through the screen. You won't get to do anything fun if you rent it. There is little need to play the missions after you unlock the Defiant because the ships unlocked after that are not very good. Unless of course you wanted to play battlefest as the Borg. Battlefest is fun, but you spend more time waiting for the loading screens to finish than you do blowing stuff up.
If you are looking for a Star Trek game that uses the big ships and you have a computer that can handle it, go for the Starfleet Command series. It is less of a shooter game, but the missions are less annoying and you don't have to unlock ships for skirmish. The graphics for 3 weren't much worse than Encounters, and you can't move in three dimensions, but you can modify and upgrade ship systems. For example, you could fire both Quantum and Photon torpedoes from the Defiant if you wanted to. As far as I know, there is no way to customize your ship on Encounters.

This game reminds me a lot of the old arcade games I use too play when I was 10 year old (back in the 80's) it's reminds me of good old Asteroid Game from back then. Except the ship & stars are better looking in this game and you have William Shattner telling you the story before you began.
But basically same concept you fly through space blowing up other ships and flying around asteroids. It is not a hard game at all, just takes time to get the controls down. Hint when you have to guard a space station lay all your mines down & move off screen and they will wipe out half your enemies and you'll finish the level more quickly.
This game would have been more fun; when you increase your engine speed kirk would say "I need more powers Scotty" but it doesn't there is No talking during the game just the same SONG over and over and it's not even the star trek theme song so my best tip turn off the volume. It is a very basic game, even boring at some times doing levels over and over to beat the clock, but if you're a star trek fan (and an old arcade player from the 80's) I think you'll enjoy this game for the price!!

This is a fun game if you just want to hop in a ship and blow some people up. You will have to suffer through the missions to do so, however. Most of them are far from fun. In particular, the first series of missions is extermely unfun. Finishing the missions is very unrewarding. It is a small game, maybe 10 hours of gameplay through the storyline at best.
But if you've always wanted to pilot the Defiant against a fleet of Species 8472, Borg, Xindi, Klingon, and Romulan ships, all at the same time, you'll enjoy the game enough to more than cover the low price of the game.

I played this game a total of 3 times and this game kept coming up "Bad disc error" or something like that. I already returned it once and it's going back again, apparently I'm not the only one having this problem. Bethesda really screwed up on this one!.
slightly disapointing but good for the price.

this game is a lot of fun if you just want to fly around and shoot stuff. but the story line is basicly all the series so if your a trek fan its really predictable. but with the skirmish mode is a lot of fun if you really do just want to fly around and shoot stuff. at first i wasn't going to buy legacy but this game didn't quite quench my thirst so this game is definetly just to hold us over.
