Other reviewers have been FAR too harsh. It is actually a good game.

I played this game by myself, and it took me around 4 and a half hours to beat.

During that time, not once did I actually experience a boring moment. There are some repetitive things in the game, such as constantly having to destroy the generators, but overall the levels are very entertaining to journey through, fight (slaughter, hack 'n' slash) and gather treasure.

Other reviewers have been very harsh on this game--- it doesn't deserve to be flamed! Most of you are comparing it to the other Gauntlet games, which is alright. But it is different from the other games in a lot of ways. As a stand-alone game, "Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows" is probably one of the best RPG/Fantasy games I have played on PS2.

Superbly Made just a tad short.

This game rocked and was a ton of fun. with all the expected gauntlet style gameplay done through a new Baldurs Gate hack & slash fighting engine. this game has beautiful locations and even the towns are very well made. very few item upgrades available (just pick-ups and power-ups no equipment) and not too much in the way of character customization like in seven sorrows but that said, this is 4 1/2 hours (yep took me that little time to beat it as of today started at 2pm ended at 6:31) of pure joy. I played alone and its a blast although it can become laborious after a while because all your special powers etc are done via a button combo system not unlike those in the atari Dragonball Z games.
It's a beautiful hack and slasher with a ton of fun, some puzzles, and a few drop dead rendered areas!

Graphics: 5 Star with ease!
Sound: good but not stellar and annoying at times. *character swing noises and death noises are grating.)
Fun: 5 stars! can be played via internet or directly 1 to 4 players and its a load of fun with a minor amount of replayability but its a gem.

Overall: 5 Stars! it was worth the 15 bucks I paid to play it and I will play it again with my friends its a great game. do not let its length ruin it for you.

Gauntlet Seven Sorrows happens to be a very good game, in my opinion. You go around progressing through mountains and destroying enemy spawns, and you can block enemy attacks. This is just a few of the many things you can do in the game. It's true that it only takes 4 hours or so to complete the game, but why is that a bad thing? Plenty of incredible games have been short. Just look at Resident Evil 2 and Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

Underrated For All The Wrong Reasons

I really do not want to write a full-blown, long review but I felt this game deserved some defending. Anyone who is complaining about the brevity of this game is not playing on 'Difficult' or 'Impossible' for their level of difficulty. They also have way too much time on their hands to sit for half of a day and play this game straight through, only to knock it for being too easy on the back end of it. The fact is, my best friend and I purchased this game looking for a fun, passable time waster that would make up for its' shortcomings by being a great co-op game.

Historically, no other series provides as much fun when it comes to cooperative gameplay as 'Gauntlet' and 'Seven Sorrows' is no exception. I was quite taken back by the varied environments of each level. Not many have mentioned how fluid the action is despite often large numbers of enemies being on the screen at once; there is never any freezing or in-game load times as you make your way through any of the levels. Most everything is interactive and little nuances such as enemies being damaged by each other or the traps laced throughout each stage add just enough realism to keep this from falling into redundancy.

I would stand by what most are saying in waiting for this game to drop into the $20-$30 range. I traded up a big batch of used games and didn't pay anything so maybe my exhuberance is balanced by the fact I do not feel I am 50 bucks out. Still, if you are looking for a fun romp w/a friend and are splitting the cost anyway, there is nothing about 'Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows' that you will be disappointed by.

Nice addition to the franchise

I love the Gauntlet franchise, from the classic arcade game that I have sacrificed hundreds of dollars in quarters playing, to the Playstation release several years ago which has provided hours of fun playing with friends. It's what we play when we get together to hang out and share a little fun together. Most of it's draw is that it's multi-player, and friends can all play together, be snarky at each other while playing - an excuse to be social while indulging our inner geek.

After played through a few levels of it last night with a friend, and we agreed that the new release was pretty fun, but nothing overly groundbreaking.

We liked the combos, the graphics, even if the storyline is a little cheezy. But, hey - it's Gauntlet, that's almost a requirement.

Our only major complaint is that you choose one of 4 characters to play, and you don't get to choose anything about that character .. Valkerie (the only female character), Elf, Warrior and Sorcerer are it so far .. unless you get to unlock new characters along the way (but I doubt it, the storyline they've created doesn't support alternate "hero" characters). But, even with that limitation, it's still a fun game to sit and waste an evening playing (and heckling) with a friend.

Not too bad

gauntlet is what it is, hack n' slash, hack n' slash some more. The characters are pretty cool and the combos and moves are pretty nice to pull off. The graphics are improved over dark legacy and the characters look less "cartoony". I enjoyed the game, yes it is a bit repetitive, but sometimes you just want to jump into a game by yourself or with a friend, and just have some mindless button mashing fun.

If you go in knowing what to expect, you'll like it. If you're expecting a huge RPG with endless depth, yeah youll probably be dissapointed. The game is short, and there isn't much there besides the button mashing and hack n slash. The story is kind of thin but interesting enough to push it along. Baldaurs gate is really along the same lines as this, but gets bogged down in the downtime between towns. This is mudch more action oriented and fun in my opinion. I'd wait till the price goes down to about 30 or 40 though, like the others said it isn't worth a full 50 bucks for 10 hours of play.

You get what you ask for

I am not an avid video gamer, you wont find a ton of games in a bookshelf, so you will have to take this review as is. I came to this game having heard it was a descent hack and slasher. When I play video games, I usually look at a) the storyline b) what goes on and c) the art of the game, that is, what I see on the screen. Those games that I have kept over the years of playing the select few games are those like FF series, EverQuest Online Adventure Frontiers, EverQuest (PC), Silent Hill series, Parasite Eve (the first one, not the second), and so forth.

The storyline of Gauntlet was interesting, though nothing to be found for those of whom read fantasy novels and play fantasy games over time. The storyline kind of reminds me, and you Bible students out there (I know you're there somewhere!), will recognize it as being something akin to that of Saul vs. David, a King lusting after all the hero had (heroes in the case of this story), and the lust for what the heroes have causing the downfall of the king.

For what goes on in the story you can pick one of four characters (more will be there if you follow the online route of this game), thus even when you finish the game as one character, it is always of interest to see how the next character will go through the game. Within these four characters you will pick new and intriguing powers and abilities as you collect gold, thus you can fine tune your character as the story moves along and goes on.

The art of the game was enjoyable as well. The levels were not tiresome same old same old. Each level, though I will point out that a lot of the reviewers of this game are right, the levels are way to small, still I liked the design. The setting was a bit different than the usual fanfare so that did catch my eyes (how the levels were structured are not the usual style one sees in say LotR Third Age or EverQuest's Champions of Norrath). Thus I wasn't seeing an exact replica of the LotR style or D&D style cliches.

So what about the game itself, well if you are any fan of hack and slash, then this game has what you want. Hack. Slash. Magic arrows. Etc. A lot of button mashing, a lot of finding the keys and a lot of destroying gates and so forth. If you are coming to this expecting the depth of FF VII, then I'm sorry you really have come to the wrong game. If you want a few hours of mindless running around the maze of levels, something to kick back with after a long day, then this is your game.

hint: difficulty setting

let me begin by saying that i loved the structure of gauntlet dark legacy, as well as it's size. certainly, seven sorrows is a disappointment in this category, since the gameworld feels quite limited. as a cooperative action game, however, it is much better in many ways. some reviewers have complained that it's too short, and too easy. the answer is simple - play it on a harder difficulty. it's only when the game is more challenging that acquiring (i.e., purchasing) and mastering the special moves actually matters. it is also not true that all characters control similarly - the wizard's standard attack is radial, rather than directional, for example, and playing with him is distinct as a result.

although it's true that this game is button-mashing mayhem from start to finish, it's still excellent, crashing, smashing chaos. seven sorrows succeeds mainly in letting you feel that your character can wander into and destroy a midsized city by the time your halfway through it.

if you want to require some skill for the ceaseless slaughter that is gauntlet, just choose the difficulty accordingly, and turn the volume all the way up. it changes the experience entirely. the save system is level based, so the tension builds as you near completion of the level, and you have to make each life count.

having played champions of norrath and the like, i appreciate gauntlet's dedication to smiting, burning, and blasting rather than...shopping. if you don't make THAT aspect of the game challenging enough for yourself, you're just not really playing it.

An okay game. Not as good as Dark Legacy!

This game is not as good as the previous version: Dark Legacy! I would still buy it if you are a fan of the games but it is a little harder to adjust to if you are accustomed to Dark Legacy.
