Welcome To The 'Nam

CONCEPT: Lead a four man infantry squad from the 101st Airborne (YEAH, BABY!!! I'm a 101st infantry vet) on a variety of missions during the Vietnam War. Your troops can be customized to perform different tasks or use weapons with different degrees of expertise.
GRAPHICS: Any one who is a "veteran" of the "Conflict" series (Desert Storm I&II) will know that the graphics are solidly decent. Not too great, yet not terrible. Characters tend to look a bit jerky when running, and enemy troops (NVA and VC) are rather tough to pick out in the jungle during a firefight (I guess that adds to the realism...). Weapon models are decent, as the weapons look more or less like their real-life counterparts, although size was a factor (ain't it always?). 7.62x51mm M-60 machine guns were roughly the same size as 7.62x54mm Mosin-Nagant rifles and THEY were kinda the same size as a 9mm M3 "Grease Gun"! Backgrounds were nice, as were the FMV sequences. I could go on, but I have a review to write...
SOUND: Again, C:DS I&II vets will know this. Sound is at best so-so. Voices are muffled and have no variety. Gets a little old when the M-60 gunner blasts someone and yells "Another one bites the dust!!!" over and over. There is very little sound difference between your weapons and the weapons of the enemy, so firefights can be somewhat confusing, and weapon reloading sounds nothing like it does in the real world. You cannot turn the voices off, you just have to live with it. The music is really cool, though. Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane and Martha and the Vandellas are there, as is the song that no 'Nam movie/game could live without, "Paint It, Black" by the Stones. Nice musical choices, more would have been nicer. Lines spoken by the game characters reference some classic 'Nam flicks like Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, and Platoon (your character's name is Kahler, rhymes with Taylor...). It's a nifty touch.
CONTROL: Controls are irritating at first, juggling between commanding troops, splitting up ammo and gear, and fighting. However, this was a gripe I had with the "Desert Storm" games, and after a while, I was good to go. Patience is a virtue. However the hallmark of the "Conflict" series was/is the ability to command your troops in a realistic fashion, even allowing you to implement actual infantry combat tactics.
WHAT'S NEW: There are a few changes that have been made for this game, that are new to the "Conflict" series. Now, you can order your men to pick up certain items (weapons, gear), heal wounded squad members, provide cover for each other or friendly units, and disarm booby traps. Also, when you go into 1st person aiming mode, you see the sights of the weapon, and not just generic crosshairs. However, the iron sights look pretty much the same, so the novelty wears off rather quickly.
OVERALL: You'd think that after all these gripes, I'd hate this game. Well, the developers took the tried and true "Conflict" formula and did it again. I loved the first games and so far, I like this one. All three games have a distinct flavor that take some time to get used to. Being a Vietnam game you have to get past some of the silly Vietnam stereotypes. You have the dumb redneck, the black dude from the city, and the ever-present scream of, "I can't take it anymore!!!" Being developed by Pivotal Games, you have to get past the lack of historical and military correctness (Military-type dialogue was taken to the hilt, and platoons have more than 4 guys. maybe you are LRRPs - Long Range Recon Patrol). But, overall it is a fun game with a nerve-wracking feeling of "What's behind THAT tree?" and triumphant feeling when that Huey swoops in to pick you and your boys up after a mission. Foul language, drug references and a real music soundtrack easily makes this entry into the "Conflict" series the most realistic (all things considered) and viceral. Check this one, you won't be let down. By the way, if any one from Pivotal Games is reading this, a game set during the Korean War (1950 - 1953) would be most welcome...

Another awesome "Conflict" game...

Conflict: Vietnam is another great game in the "Conflict" series. For the record I am a female & I never really play any fighting games (with the exception of the Conflict games) because I'm not into the shooting/fighting games. When Back to Baghdad came out my husband begged & begged me to play it with him & I finally did & I couldn't stop. When we saw that there was a new one out we sent my husband out the night it was released to get it. We love it. As the other reviewer stated the controls are the same but I didn't find the game easier. If anything I found it a little harder. You still have the option to do the missions on 3 different levels & we started at the bottom on easy. It still takes us a few tries before we beat a board but if you want a harder challenge do it on one of the harder levels. We like to beat it on easy & then go back & beat it on the other levels. The boards seem to be a lot bigger on this game & it's a little more difficult finding you way because there are a lot of foliage. It looks like your in the jungle most of the time. If you liked Conflict: Back to Baghdad or are looking for a new shooting game I highly recommend this game. We love it.

Could be better than Shellshock!

A hilarious portrayal of this otherwise very serious war, Conflict: Vietnam exaggerates just about every theme the war has inspired in films such as Full Metal Jacket, the Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. It is about four men who's troubles begin during a inevitable separation with their Platoon while doing an ordinary patrol through the jungle. The group's Sergeant, Frank Wier, while determined to return to the 101st, is a man that has a much greater agenda in mind other than survival. A true dedicated leader in the war against Communism. And somewhere between scavenging for Intel, destroying hidden weapon caches and eliminating scattered NVA operations throughout the jungle, the true aim is to just make it back to their squadron. You encounter abandoned Buddhist temples infested by VC, explore large networks of underground tunnels, plow through swamps, cliff-hang off the sides of Hues and shoot at NVA militants below with M-60s. I mean, this is a pretty fun game! There are also a few unique missions in addition to the ordinary seek and destroy, where stealth often plays an important role in your run for victory, namely the mission where you help a small group of South Vietnamese villagers rescue some people from their tribe who were kidnapped by the VC.

This is the most fun military game i have played. Alot of people are saying that this game sucks because of graphics. Well the graphics are just fine. the only problem with them is when zoomed in with the sniper the guys are sometimes not right. But who cares this game is fun. It include real battles like the Tet offensive whic i thought to be on of the most fun levels. I also like the fact that they did not make it to realistic like full spectrum warrior. It is real enough and fun. On easy the game is very simple and you can beat it within 4 hours but as you move through the difficulties it gets much harder. the best part of this game is that you earn points for doing well and at the end of each mision you can increase your players skill levels on things like machin gun, pistol, sniper, grenades and other things. All in all this will be the best 40 bucks yo will spend.

It's great that they take wars from back in the day and make into a video game it give this young generation a history lesson. Even if it's bloody violent I say it has to be that the only way a game can get their attention. Gory bloody games is what out today. This Vietnam has great graphics and good sound you can move all around the board which means more adventure.

Since I'm a Military Policeman in the Air Force (Security Forces, I would just like to say this game is total BS. Having fired the M-60 machine gun, and have seen the damage it does first hand. I know when you shoot someone point blank with a 60 they are going down instantly. It takes about 50 rounds to kill someone in this game. Desert Storm 1 & 2 are much better than this game.

A another great game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Conflict Vietnam is a good game. The controls are the same as Conflict Desert Storm and the missions are easier. Its realistic. Theres even traps. If you liked Conflict Desert Storm or Conflict Desert Storm 2 you should rent or buy this game. It is worth it.
