Just to straighten things out.

I would like to say this: 1. You don't have to beat the game twice to get Spike back.[yes ,the game just doesn't revolve around Jimmy].You have to return to different levels to get the monkeys you haven't caught yet. 2. Jimmy's voice is not Ash Ketchum. Veronica Taylor [yes,Ash is a girl] had nothing to do with the game. 3. The camera can be reseted by pressing L1. I enjoy this game especially because of the music. There are 51 songs including the Pink Monkey music video, Escape the Ape. Control systems are very original compaired to what is available today. You can walk along with your RC card beside you. I hope this review helps to clear what the game is like.

At first when i got Ape Escape 1, i thought it will be another of those childish boring games. I started playing just to make fun of it, but then i relized i was playing for hours and hours. I was wrong. Ape Escape 1 was the best game EVER!!! Then when i heard that Ape Escape 2 was coming out, i was super excited. First, it came out in japan, and i had to wait, like a year!! Finally it came out and i had to get it!! I do miss spike though and the charaters are diffrent. But it is an awsome game for kids under 16

What happend?

The only reason I gave this game 5 stars because I had Ape Escape1.I hope someody can tell me what happend to Spike which in the old game was the main character, his friend was captured and brainwashed and you saved him at the end of the game. You know,I really miss the good old Ape Escape.

Near-perfect platformer that never fails to amuse

The wife and me loved Ape Escape 3. Next came Ape Escape 2, and it's been just as entertaining, just as clever. The simple play is wonderful, letting the humor and quirkiness take center stage. The game can be intense, but is also forgiving--generous when it comes to save points and restoring lives. The Ape Escape series is a welcome diversion from some of the video game brutality that's out there, its minimalist approach a nice alternative to some of the more complicated titles.

Ape Escape 3 gets a 5-star rating, while Ape Escape 2 gets 4+ stars. Why? While Ape Escape 2 has a solid, enjoyable soundtrack, Ape Escape 3 has one deserving of a Grammy. Also, the morph powers in Ape Escape 3, while frustrating at times, add another dimension of fun without confounding game play. And the monkey movies are neat. Too bad Pipotchi is gone.

Greatness gone bad.

There was a hint of brillence in the first ape escape that you could really admire. The game tested you in many catagories, and in the end, you were a better gamer than before. But that was five years ago, and it seems that gamming standards have fallen greatly.
I think the biggest creative mistake the developers made was waiting so long to create a true sequal to the debute title. I mean think about it. The first game was made almost 5 years ago now, meaning the audience it was aimed for at the time is older now. If they had raised the E rating to T, it would have given the game a lot more potential for a more exciting and creative plot. It's safe to say that the 'original' fans of ape escape were pretty shocked when they played this game. You can really tell which of the reviewers on the cite played the first game and which ones didn't. This game pretty much alienates it's former fans with childlish dialog and way too easy gameplay.
As for the characters, you can't really be satified with any of them. With stereotypes of your everday after-school anime shows, this game really disapoints you. And no matter what some reviewers say, this "jimmy" is Ash from pokemon. Whoever said it wasn't, is beeing mistaken by the replacement voice over that the pokemon series used in later seasons. But that aside, it's really annoying, and I liked the original characters more.
Even with all the flaws that this game so readily displays, there is one fact that you cannot ignore. The graphics have without a doubt gotten much better. But obviously that wasn't enough to cancel out the rest of this games problems.
Even tho stories don't really matter in games like this, this story pretty much annoys you to the core. Sure it was sorta cute at first to see specter in the opening scene, but if it werent for that, the story would be flat out lame.
Well as you can tell, from my point of view, this game wash incredibly dissapointing. I don't think I'll ever think about ape escape the same again. It went from the coolest game ever, to the coolest game ever with the stupidest sequal. It's just amazing how many flaws this game had, campared to how awesome the first game was. After you beat the first game, you truly feel like you've accomplished something by beating such a difficult game. But when you beat the sequal, you feel as if you've finally completed some tedious never-ending chore.
Yes, many things went terribly wrong in the creation of this sequal, but you can never destroy the classics and that is a relief! But if you won't take my word, and the word of all the other 'original' fans, play this game and wittness the horror yourself.

great monkey catching fun

Basically everyone has the same opinion, Ape Escape was an amazingly original playstation game. They tried to repeat the magic in Ape Escape two and came off as not much of a sequel but as the same game retooled. The storyline is a real sequel type hte evil bass specter from the last game is back and is out for revenge. There where no new innovations and pretty much no significant gadgets that made the game play different. But the game feels pretty much the same. I play video games on tv with picture in picture and regularly watch tv while playing. So I never really take interest into soundtracks and characters voices. I really care about gameplay. And this game play like the original. I feel this one is tougher than the first ( I easily beat the first, no problems. There have been a few snags and many repeated attempts at one area). There seems to be a lot less cookies (health) and lives around each level and the only time you get any is either when you don't need it or when you are sooo close to death it really doesn't help. They seem to have taken those out from the levels and put them in this gotcha box. For collecting ten coins you can get an item from the box picture one of the things in a grocery store where you put in a quarter and out comes a prize or candy. This gets really annoying because you have to stand on this platform where it removes 10 coins from you and then breack this little ball and get the prize. It has stuff from monkey fables that are occasionally funny but pointless to pictures. Buried deep in that junk piles are extra lives, weapon upgrades, mini games and health. These are very very rare. That could be to poor level designs or just meant to be tougher i don't know. After beating the game the first time, you get the magic punch tool of the last game and have to go back and finsh catching every single monkey. It seems pretty annoying, because you have no clue where they are some times its just a wall that you have to hit with the punching glove to find the monkey. Its a real waste of time to go back through an entire level just for that. Most of the time the monkeys that can only be accessed with the glove are really easy to catch so it only leaves finding that one monkey. I wasn't to attached to the characters so being jimmy instead of spike doesn't really matter to me. In this game you have this annoying little pipotchi on your shoulder most of the time. its like a baby monkey with wings. If your a begining player, it can be useful. Spots where a gadget is required it'll tell you to use it. It does it by making a bubble pop up and than a picture of the gadget. It gets in your way a couple of times so if you don't need it ( anyplayer with half a brain really shouldn't) its annoying. It does occasionally give you a cookie when your health runs out and help you to edges but i think its pretty useless. To top it off it goes away for a while. The prof says to keep it in the lab and then pipotchi comes to look for you and is goon for a couple levels. They tell you to look for it, don't bother you'll come across it at the right level. BUt don't get the wrong idea, its still a great platformer but the original just was better. I think we get spoiled after playing the original that we just don't think of the actual gameplay which is still pretty good.

Outrageously fun(ny)!!

OMG, is this game fun or is this game fun!? Those who haven't played this game are seriously missing out on a good time! Although there are some flaws and stupid stuff, Ape Escape possibly is the underated game of the year.

Story- The story is actually pretty cheesy. You send a huge crate of new monkey pants to the Monkey Zoo for them to try on. The main character Jimmy accidently send a shipment of Monkey Helmets, which make monkeys that wear them really smart. So the old villian Spectre grabs a hold of one, and lets all of the monkies loose, threatening to destroy the world with his army of 300 monkies........whatever dude, at least they tried. Although it may seem funny at first, it gets pretty old. After the main sequence, hardly any parts of the story move on, and nobody really talks to one another.

Characters- The characters are badly done as well. There are basically four main characters: Jimmy, the monkey catcher, Natalie, the genius girl, Proffessor (???), the professor, and Spectre, the evil monkey! There are also the Fab Monkey Five, but they never really do anything. The bad thing about this game is that no one really comunicates. I mean sure, they give you useless hints and stuff, but there is almost no dialouge.

Gameplay- The gameplay is fantastic! You use the right analog stick to move and the left one to use your weapons. You can double jump and stuff like that too. The only real bad thing about the gameplay is that the camera angles suck monkey, and really annoy you when you need it in a correct spot! I believe there are over 13 different weapons, some returning from the first game like the RC car and Super Hula Hoop, others new, like the Bannana-rang and the super soaker cannon. This adds lots of depth to the game. Erm, 300 monkeys, so you will use all the weapons you can get!

Toughness/replay value-..............this game is VERY VERY VERY easy. I sadly beat it in less than 4 hours. It kinda stinks to have this short a game, with so many monkeys! There are bosses as well but the only one that offers a descent challenge was the final boss. The monkeys do have weapons occationally like machine guns and bombs, but they cause no real threat. Very easy.
In terms of replay value, this game's is gi-normous! After you beat the game, you can play time trial on all the levels. If thats not enough, you can cash in your coins into this vending machine thingy and recieve new RC cars, pictures, monkey stories, music, comics, and tons of other crap! And if thats boring to you, you can unlock three intense mini games: Monkey Soccer (extremely addicting, played it longer than the game itself), Dance Monkey Dance (DDR style stuff with an analog and monkey twist), and Monkey Climber (This one bites, and is hard). All of these can be played with a friend, and when playing monkey soccer, you use the monkeys you caught in the game as your players! They all are extremely addicting, and a lot better than the minigames in AE1.

Sound/Music-Nothing really caught my ears here. Some catchy tunes, but they get repetetive. Yet, its always classic when you sneak up on a monkey and it goes, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!" then chucks a bomb at you.

I only gave this game 4 stars because it lacked a good challenge, as well as characters and story. If you are sick to death of finger busting games like Ratchet and Clank or boring shooters, definately give AE2 a try. I can guarentee you won't put your controller down, at least not when playing Monkey Soccer. (Its also worth it to see monkeys slide by on sushi platters in the credits)

I feel like crying...

It's very hard to find a way to express just how dissapointed and sad I was when I played this game. I mean, how can the words 'ape escape' and 'stupid' possibly go in the same sentence?! Well I'm sorry to say they do. The first game was so awesome. Sure the graphics aren't good anymore, but at the time they were. The gameplay, the characters, the levels were just plain better than in the sequel. The second one just makes me sick. From yellow monkeys to Jimmy saying that he's gonna spank Spector, the game was just plain DISGUSTING. Sure the music was alright, but the opening theme to the first one just sticks with you. The new one isn't catchy at all. Sigh, with a maximum of only 1,000 words, I never be able to say everything that whent wrong with this game. What were those developers thinking?! The absolute only thing that I will give this game credit for were the nice updated graphics. But you can't hold a game together with only graphics. i just can't stand seeing one of my very favorite games disgraced like this. The era of great games is over. Now all you can hope for is childish sequals. They need to read their customer reviews over in Japan, and realize what they're doing to their classics. Or I'm afraid that the real Ape Escape will be dead forever.

If you loved the original Ape Escape as much as I did, PLEASE listen to me!! DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME!!!!

An easy, predictable video game

When I saw ads in magazines and commercials for Ape Escape 2, I knew that this game would be fun and cute. Well, I was only right about one thing: It's cute. It turned out to be an easy and predictable game with no twists and turns whatsoever. If you did like Ape Escape, then you'd probably enjoy the storyline of this one. But it has poor controls, and it is the most predictable game I have ever played. It has horrible voices (think Pokemon all over again), and even worse controls. If you liked Ape Escape, you may want to rent this one. Overall, Ape Escape 2 was no big surprise.

first of all, i am german, so please excuse my bad english.

at the beginning, i liked the game, even though it did'nt reach the first part. in some levels, it's not realy easy to play and i got frustrated sometimes. but mostly the "big monkeys" appearing every now and then are making me sick, specially spector. me and my whole family tried to beat him for a very long time, and this is just disappointing!

stay away from this game, it's not worth the money, you spend for it!!!
