THIS is a game?

The game would be fun if it actually PLAYED. Character voices got scrambled, abilities got scrambled, and NONE of the NPC's in this expansion actually came up with a dialogue box, making it IMPOSSIBLE to go on any of the additional adventures. They remained stuck in a loop, restating their default audio again and again and again.... This CD is NOT a game - it's a DRINK COASTER. DO NOT EVEN THINK about buying this pile until they release a bug fix!! I'm using a G4 running OS9.1 with 384Meg of ram, so I *think* I meet the min. requirements. Zero stars is more like it! Too many bugs to even consider - I RETURNED this stinker!

Go get Shadows of Amn instead

GraphSim fixed all the little things and [messed] up the big ones. Sure, it's nice that everybody now has two quick weapon slots (so Jaheira is playable), and that hide in shadows doesn't work if there aren't any shadows (oops!). The new quests aren't bad either, though they're nothing special.

The big problem is that it crashes like a drunk driver. Most sounds HAD to be turned off during big fights or I would get an error saying that a decoder was not available & the game quit. I considered myself lucky if I could get through an hour of play without having a hard freeze that required a full system reset, even after tweaking the settings (most sounds off, etc.) to improve stability. Don't even think of increasing the game's memory partition, because it will actually crash MORE, even with tons of extra memory left over for the system! As far as I can tell (i.e., just looked at their Web site), GraphSim never released a patch at all.

Save yourself some frustration. Go get Shadows of Amn instead. It's not only prettier & more interesting, it WORKS.

BG Expansion ToSC

Just got the game this morning and so far I like it, but it did crash a couple of times on me. The graphics are as expected from the original game, and some of the early encounters are pretty challenging. Some of the side plots are carried over from the original game and have become the basis for the plot of this game.

The company has worked on increasing the easy of game play and fascilitating ease of combat (i.e. all characters now have 2 quick weapon slots which replaces a delema from the orginial game - do I give my mage, cleric, or multiclassed character a melee or ranged weapon). New weapons and spells are also introduced as is a higher experience cap (and thus higher level characters). The character pathfinding has remained somewhat a problem (i.e. characters still wander off during explorations of underground layers, leading to them unexpectedly running into traps or monsters), and characters move at the same (moderatley slow) rate. Perhaps this is not as much of a problem on faster computers.

All in all the game sees quite fun, just like the original, but because of some minor problems (pathfinding and a couple of crashes), I give it 4 stars.

Very good extension

After completion of this game, I immediately bought Baldurs gate II. This extension for the initial game allows you to play with your previous character. The graphics are really nice and the scenario is very intersting. Concerning the problems with the sound and abilities I am very surprised: the voices of the character were clear and no crashes, excepted at one place (wich is not required for the completion of the game). I really enjoyed this game and recommend it to anyone who played the original baldur's gate ( tested on an Ibook 500, 256 Mo RAM system 9.2)

Great fun, but oh the crashing.....

As with other reviewers, I had problems with the game crashing....most noticable during the most difficult fight in the game. Luckily, an experienced RPG player knows to save the game often.

The additional items, spells, and areas are a welcome addition, though the experience cap of 161k is still a bit low. However, there are easy workarounds that can be downloaded from the web. Still, the overall enjoyment of the game makes up for sketchy stability.
