I thought that this game kept true to many of the better aspects of RTS gaming, while still keeping it fresh with new ideas, creatures, and strategies. Just a great game, with great replay value.
five stars all the way

If you liked Age of Empires II than you'll love this.
It has better graphics and a new story line.

This game lacks the features I came to expect from Age of Kings. I used t be an avid Age of Kings and Conquerors player and when I heard about Age of Mythology, I was ecstatic. But, when I got it, the luster wore off. The campaign has not much of an interllectual value and is truly a waste of time in the original and I thought that they were improving it so, I got the expansion. To my dismay, the expansion's campaign was even more pointless and groundless. Let me give you a lttle detail in case you didn't play Age of Kings or Conquerors. The Age of Kings campaigns (Barbarosa, etc.) were very difficult and I stress that point. They would usually take at least 45 minutes. The Conquerors scenarios were varied but still kept the interllectual focal point. The new campaigns lack this facet which I would normall expect. The new AOE III seems better as the demo came out prior to this review. But, the in-game multiplayer feature is better than the zone way of old. The onine features are fun as is playing with people of different cultures. In my opinion the only excellen part is the multiplayer. Word to the wise, do get the game and see, the Atlantean culture isn't all it's cracked up to be.
They should've made Age of Imperialism...

I was really annoyed when ensemble said they would be making AoM instead of the next "age" game, perhaps "Age of Imperialism", which would go from the colonial period to perhaps the mid-1800s. But since they were making it anyway I thought I might as well try it out. It definitely didn't have the same feel as the other age games. Sure, you started out with a town center and some villagers and a scout, but the 3d just looks bad. And the sounds weren't very good either. And only 3 races! I was very disappointed. I hope they hurry up and deliver the next age game and make it right next time!
this game kicks butt! I loved the graphics!

Be clear; it is *not* an extension of Age of Empires. Strategies you might apply there work only half-heartedly here The 'favor' or mythic aspect is fun and interesting, but neither compelling nor extraordinary. Yes, the audio and video are sublime ! However, make sure your machine is up to the task. I had to upgrade a video board (8 to 32MB),just to get it to load. I have an older 400MHz system, but do have 256MB ofRAM. STILL, I have yet to complete a game - it locks up solid, requiring a cold boot and unpredictably. So, if you have a gamer's machine your luck may be better than mine. I still go back to Age of Empires, Conquerors expansion.
same old, same old - but not quite

Basically AOM functions similarly to AOE in that your basic approach is the same: you collect resources and use them to develop technologies and units. instead of collecting stone, you now harvest "favor." Sure, the units are different than what we saw in AOE and have different abilities: Some are now Myth units which have abilities that AOE units did not have. In addition, before progressing to another age, you now have to chose a minor god that is contingent on the civilization (and god) you chose at the outset. Overall, however, the game is basically the same as AOE - I don't consider applying new labels to units as a vast improvement or change to the basic tenets of the game. Speaking of improvements: I really don't see any. Actually, i do see quite a lot of the opposite. While we had many civilizations to choose from in AOE, we are now very limited - which reduces the joy of re-playing this game. In addition, difficulty ratings are pretty horrible. In the "Easy" mode, you basically fall asleep since nothing ever happens. You just collect and develop until you are strong enough to dominate the world. You won't get much hassle from you computer opponents. Switching to "moderate" won't help you much, though. All of a sudden, you don't have any opportunity to really collect and develop anything since you are overrun by your opponents. You are faced with constant attacks - which takes away any enjoyment.
If you've played and enjoyed AOE then this game is simply boring. However, if you are new to this kind of game, then by all means, go ahead and have fun.
A Must..
