Hunting in your living room

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 8 / 11

A must have for the hunter in the family. This game makes you want to go out and buy a hunting license. Very realistic game with real life hunting situations. I like the idea that you can choose different regions to hunt. Plus all the accessories and different firearms you can use. That keeps the game from becoming boring. The graphics are pretty darn good too. Give this game a try. I think you will like it.

Pretty darn good!

I bought this game because I read about it in Xbox Magazine - they gave it a really good score and the review was promising. Boy were they on target! The graphics in this game are outstanding, just outstanding. I've never seen water that realistic, or seen games where the grass and trees look so real!

Gameplay is fun, very much a hunting sim though - if you don't have any patience, you might not like it, because the deer are pretty sensitive and if you don't hunt the right way (with sents and stuff) you'll never catch one.

Sounds are OK. Bubbling water was the best, and the random sounds of animals in the distance.

All around good hunting simulation, strategy needed, outstanding visuals.

Husband loves it, great christmas gift!

I bought this one for my husband for Christmas, and we both love it - for the price, I am amazed at the quality of the game both in terms of graphics and addictive gameplay.

Hunting has never been all that interesting to me, but after playing this game, I'm actually considering going out on a real hunt - it's not just about killing animals, but about strategy, wilderness know-how, and adventure. I did not have the problem with loading time that the other review mentioned (it loads in a few seconds for me?), and found that the strict rules (such as shooting at buildings, trying to hunt animals that are out of season, etc) to be add an educational element that I find very reassuring as a mother. I encourage my son to play the game, knowing that he will learn about hunting "by the book", and would certainly rather see him play this than some of the real violent games out there.

For myself, I find the game to be very pretty - it really does look like the great outdoors, the water shimmers, the trees move in the wind, the weather and sky change over time, and the sounds of animals in the distance are very engrossing.

5 out of 5 - nice work Cabela's!

Your character is way too feeble and down right slow!

The graphics are nothing short of amazing in every way.
However, the following other important aspects of this game would probably dissapoint most in a matter of hours.
1. Your character gets "winded" after running for only about 6 seconds...(His name should be Marlboro Man).
2. Driving a vehicle raises your bloodpressure to dangerous levels with ease by blinding you with bushes and trees when you are trying to go anywhere.
3. The getting rescued thing that happens everytime you slip and fall, wade in a lake, roll a vehicle or get run-down by a varmint gets old real quick(you loose all progress for that season).
Unless you have nerves of steel and are on antidepressants...I'd give it a miss mate!

all around good hunting game

this is a pretty good hunting game. there are some faults but none to be very upset with. the graphics are great and the gameplay is nothing short. if you hace an xbox and like hunting this is the game for you. i bought this in anchorage a couple weeks ago and started playing it right away, and my dad who has no intrest in video games thought it was cool. obviously its very realistic because when your dad gets into it and gives you real life hunting tips...and they work...its pretty cool. so anyways this is a great game and i still pick it up every other day to play it for a while.

Almost like the real thing.(too bad)

This game is just like real hunting-sitting in a stand for hours and rarely see anything worth shooting.Maybe they should of had turkeys and racoons eating my deer bait just like at my hunting lease. The only thing I had alittle problem with is there are no mountains or snow in Florida.Oh well, better luck next year.

Worth a try!

Wow - just wow. The graphics in this game are better than some of the top titles out right now, and for half the price, that ain't bad.

To the person having trouble running - the hunter you choose has stats. If you pick a hunter with low strength he can only carry a certain amount of weight, you probably have too many heavy items in your backpack. I think this is pretty realistic, and I really like that the stats actually effect the game.

A decent deer hunting game with great outdoor feel!

Overall it's a fun game, though the intense A.I. of the deer is a bit much. Of course that is why it's so realistic. As an avid deer hunter I did find it odd that it always has the deer take off 80 miles and hour if you shoot and miss. In real life sometimes when you shoot and miss, they don't move at all!

I found the use of the 4 wheeler, well, really not that useful. The steering on it is not the best, you should be able to slow the thing down and make some sharp turns, but this thing has 2 speeds: Not moving and moving, so you tend to overcorrect at the wrong times when you are manuevering and end up hitting rocks. Also, is there a game out there that doesn't make a 1-foot by 1-foot sagebrush inpenetrable? I think it's pretty unrealistic not to be able to run over the brush if it's short.

The non-game animals add absolutely nothing to this game, always annoyingly running around with the deer and such. In real life you are not concerned or even paying attention to some dog-sized rodent and anyone that would shoot one "by mistake" belongs in a sanitarium!

Who's body is the game using as the hunter, John Candy? My hunter cannot run 20 feet without panting, then needing to rest, then within an hour of the hunt he's practically burned out. I know not every deer hunter in real life is a Special Forces Scout but give me a break...anyone this out of shape in real life should be at the gym getting in shape and not out hunting! They should supply, as an extra feature, and oxygen mask for you're out of breath, weak-bodied hunter.

The game does have excellent cinematic appeal and makes you feel like you are right there in those very canyons, plains, and valleys, surrounded by the sweet song of mother nature and a beautiful view of the wilderness. I know a lot of people love the game so I would say rent it (2005 is out now of course) and keep your eye out for perhaps other deer hunting games to try.

Activision is writing the good reviews!

Don't be fooled by the long detailed and positive reviews. Donna Johnston from NY is listed in the credits of all the Cabela titles as the QA Lead. Why is she giving her review on the games she worked on which you see on every Cabela game? It looks like Activision is paying their employees to write reviews for them. This game has poor graphics and is tedious and boring. There are much better hunting games out there. Don't waste your money on their falsely advertized garbage.

Made in Romania!

Do they even have hunting or know anything about it in Romania? They cleary don't know much about it which explains why your run out of breath after five seconds in the game and have to walk painfully slow 90% of the time. Also you can walk around while you shoot which my dad would kick my ass for doing. It turns out Cabela's Big Game Hunter, Cabela's Deer Hunt 2004, and Cabela's Dangerous Hunts for the Playstation 2, Xbox, and PC versions are all made in Romania. No wonder Sunstrom, the originator of the game went out of business here in Indiana. I was so pissed I returned this pile of garbage. Any self respecting American should do the same, or not buy any of these games in the first place. You think they could at least make a hunting game in the states. I'm going to wait for Deer Hunter on the Playstaion 2 which is made in the good ole U.S.A. plus the PC version is way better than Cabela's.
