You'd rather rent the game instead (trust me I did)

I beat the game in 5 days so don't waste your bucks on something you are going to play for only 10 at most days. Rent the game

not that great of a vehicle shooter

Vigilante 8 is not a good vehicle shooter at all. The graphics and sound are the only good things about it. The control ruins the game, you can't make real tight turns or spin on a dime like you can in other vehicle shooters I've played. I was real disappointed after I played a few rounds of this game. The weapon choice is good and the levels are imaginative, but the control just ruins everything else. The fun factor and replay value are completely ruined by the sorry control.

If you want to play a great vehicle shooting game, buy Twisted Metal 2 for the Playstation. If you must play Vigilante 8, just rent it.

Good as a one-player game, better with multiple players

Overall this is a fun game -- different characters and cars that can get different weapons to shoot up other vehicles and/or buildings. The environment looks good, the controls are fairly easy to master, and the music is fun.

Winning the various single-player missions allows you to unlock some new characters and environments, BUT once you have the hang of the game, you can beat the single-player missions fairly quickly. The other single-player modes, Arcade and Survival, may also give you some enjoyment, but overall you can finish this quickly, and might even get a little bored with it after a few days -- if ALL you do is single-player stuff.

It is LOADS of fun as a 2 or more person game, though. I tend to enjoy 'social gaming' more anyway -- games like "Super Smash Brothers", "Goldeneye", and "Gauntlet" are a lot of fun when you are playing with (or against!) other players. This is a VERY good game for that kind of group activity, and will add to the "replay" value of this game.

a early attempt at twisted metal

theres a bunch of cars and trucks chasing eachother all over creation and endlessly blasting the crap out of eachother.thats really about it.using the rapid fire cheat will make youre gameplay far more enjoyable.thres really not much else to tell.i like the dune buggy.his special weopon is a gatling type gun.it always points where the bad guy is so you dont have to chase the punks down.

I picked this game up 'cause when I was playing Destruction Derby I thought it needed guns, so this game was recomended.

Overall, after the reveiws here have said it's so good, i guess i got my expectations up too high and was let down when I started playing.

First off tho, some reveiwers said the grpahics where no good. The graphics are great. What you need to do is have an expansion pack in the 64. And then during game play, press start to enter your paused menu, then turn the resolution to high, and it will change from the almost 2Dish graphics to propper 3D graphics. Or even more recomended by me, go to the password screen and enter Max_Resolution as the code. Press ok and then follow the same steps as before, but you'll get an option after High Res that says MAX and the graphics are suburp for a 64 game! I dont know why they would put that option in the start menu tho, it should be on the main screen options, so many people have probably missed it.

(note: I actualy had to turn the graphics up higher, for some reason when I played with the default graphics, it would freeze on a black screen at the end of the the first race, but it worked fine when they where turned up!)

So there is an area you drive through collecting diffrent icons with guns, rockets, bombs etc... however it is annoying that there are secret moves. For instance, you press up, up, down, Z with one kind of powerup thing and you do a secret heatseeker missile or something... I dunno why they made it like that 'cause
A) I dont have a booklet to read them
b) the booklet doesnt reveal the hidden moves or finshing esk moves
c) the arror pad means you have to stop steering with the stick to execute it
d) the codes moves like that are for fighting games Capcom and Acclaim make, not for a game where its unsesercery.

Like I said, I got too excited over it and it wasnt as good as I thought it would be, it's probaly better on 2 player, but half the time I dont know what i'm collecting, the thing should say what it is you pick up in writing to know which of the coded moves it is.

Check into various websites for codes, there is is lenty of codes for invincabilty and more tracks, cars, and even a space ship to fly (but it doesnt fly up or down, it guides itself, you just choose left or right which is a bummer, guess i'm too used to Rougue Squadrens controls) The game needs a diffrent style of course too, I dunno what, but open areas all the time gets pretty boring.

the games ok, but it's not as good as some hype it up to be. It's not better then any other car game, it's just diffrent. It needed some turbo or nitro boosts in it. There is an after burner but it's coded, but it needed it to be a one button press, not a 5 button combination coded move.

Cars with big guns. Yipee!

Vigilante 8 may have a sappy storyline, but that can easily be over-looked. The game pins you in a [generally goofy] car and makes you perform special "missions" across very different landscapes. Landscapes vary from farmyards to air force bases to dams, and objectives include protecting and destroying buildings and other cars. It sounds simple (and it is), but imagine driving a big, mean school bus through a fence with a huge machine gun strapped to the back. Yes, with the aide of devastating and effective weapons, there is plenty to hoot about. But like all good things, this kind of novelty will wear off. And since the missions are easily skimmed through in a matter of two days, not much is left for yourself. So what saves this game from being ignored on retail shelves? It has a two-player co-op mode! Not only that, but it's a fun two-player co-op mode! You can go through the entire single-player quest with a friend now. And if that isn't enough, the four-player deathmatch is great. However.... the framerate will suffer and the deathmatches do not offer a whole lot of customization. In the end, Vigilante 8 is a great party game when in the mood for vehicular combat, only being surpassed by San Francisco Rush 2049. You decide.

Cool Game

This game is probably the best car-arena-fighting game next to Destruction Derby 64. This game is amazing, but since the graphics are 64ish, it is to me hard to see whats going on at times... but for a 64 game, this game should be an auto buy for someone who can find it.

Fun, but not as good as I thought.

I rented the game and it was pretty fun but the game dosen't have enough tracks or weapons. I would suggest that you rent it insted of buying it, unless you like it enough to buy it.

Far out!

First car combat game on Nintendo 64, "Vigilante 8" makes you feel like your in 1979's "Mad Max" because all of the machine guns and car bashing action. There are 13 characters, but some are hidden, which you can unlock by completing quests with non hidden characters. The levels are creative and dazzling, like the frontier town which makes you feel like you're in a western movie. The game is a little too easy, but all in all,it's a great game.
