old school fun

Are you getting sick of the saying "old school" by now? Get used to it. Duke is back but in his old side scrolling environment with a 3D makeover. It reminds me of how much fun games like contra were. I would have liked to see more enemies at once with more devastating weaponry. Duke, however, did manage to bring some innovation to an already tapped out genre. Overall, "Manhattan Project" is a good appetizer before Duke Nukem Forever is released and for less than $30, what the hell.

Top notch game

You just must play this game. It's a blast. Great graphics, great sound, and FUN in spades. I play games a lot, but I have not had this much fun playing a PC game for years. I don't know why it is, but this game just works.

and Duke RULEZ!

Classic Duke Revisited

If you've ever played Duke Nukem I & II, you will probably love this game. This side scroller incorporates a lot of the themes (think cameras and helicopters among others) from the classic games into a 3D environment with good results. Lots of running, jumping, ledges, you know the drill. Lots of funny "Duke-Speak" and a few buxom babes. See how many secret areas you can find, it isn't so easy. The downside of the game is the somewhat repetative nature of the levels and the lack of freedom of movement that comes from a side scroller. Still, it's cheap and fun and will tide you over until Duke Nukem Forever sees the light of day

Disappointing =(

As a fan of Duke from the beginning I was a little disappointed by this release. Seems like in 2002 we could ask for better...... Come on, a side-scroller with poor graphics and no network play? Thats so dated. I have a P3 not a 486. Soured by this experience I anxiously await the Duke Nukem Forever release of the "Real" game. Out in.....forever.

=(

Not the same Duke we all loved

What happened to this game? This game is in 3rd person!! What is up with that? Poor Duke, I hate to see you go this way 'ol buddy. This would have been a great follow-up to the original, but not after playing Duke in 1st person for so long. Good-bye old freind. We all hope to see the real Duke again someday. This was a disapointment. Don't get me wrong, for what it is, the graphics are good. If you had never played the other it might be OK.

I can't believe they actually released this...

Talk about living in the past. This Duke is so ... it isn't
funny. In the User's Guide, they pretend that their using the
old technology (the so-called platform sideways style) is a trip
into nostalia land. And Duke's narration/comments sounds like
they lifted the entire speech file from Duke NukeM 3D. Not to
mention that they changed what keys to use for action. If you're
used to playing other games that use keyboard input, it's
gonna take you a couple of days to get used to the way they
laid out the keyboard. Don't waste your money on this one.

Side scroller, no 3-D. The first Dukes were much better. Save your money for Doom III. You'll find my copy of DNMP on eBay in a bit.

NOT A SEQUEL

Some of the reviewers of this title seem a bit confused as to its nature. This is NOT the sequel to Duke Nukem 3D. The true sequel will be titled "Duke Nukem Forever" and will be released someday by 3D Realms. "Manhattan Project" was developed by a 3rd party studio just for kicks while we wait for the true sequel. Think of it as a spin-off. They wanted to make a title that was a bit nostalgic for older styles of gameplay, and at the same time update that style with newer technology. And for what it is, they did a wonderful job. Now stop bitching and keep waiting for the sequel.

Unfairly criticized--it's a top game!

Some of the comments here are quite funny. The original Dukes were both sidescrollers! And they were fun. DNMP is fun as well, and looks better than I would have thought. I was skeptical but once I saw the gameplay movie on the official site of the game, I was sold... I can't believe they made it so inexpensive. Well, we win, cause this game ROCKS! It feels like Duke and it is the most fun I've had on a pc since Duke Nukem 3D.

If you are sad and hurt that it's a platform scroller, and not another FPS, then you're a little too shallow to enjoy this game. This is what gaming is about, having fun! Take a chance on this one, you won't regret it. I play more DNMP than I do SOFII..and that's saying something.

Very Disappointing

This is the most dissapointing PC game I have bought in quite a while. I enjoyed the earlier Duke titles and thought they were great FPS games. The Manhatten Project retains some of the feel of the previous Duke games but is not up to par with its ancestors. The biggest complaint I have is with the user interface. It is nearly impossible to control the on-screen character with either keyboard commands or the joystick. Also, the horizontal only movement and the third person perspective does not work well with a shoot-em-up such as this. I like the graphics and the game concept but control is of paramount importance in a shooter and this game just does not have it.
