if you are a gamer, stay away from this product at all cost, if you have brain cells...buy at once. this is an amazing interactive film that has time travel, fantastic weapons and atmosphere that beats crap life and halotosis into a bloody pulp. diverse environments, jaw dropping level design and amazing monsters provide you with a challenging adventure with sidekicks that actually work if you understand how to use the interface. this game delivers on all levels, so, think for yourself and have a great time with this film.

This game wasn't even worth the $8 I paid for a used copy of it. For a game that took so long to make, it doesn't have much to show for it. The graphics weren't at all impressive for today's standards. The voice acting was cheesy. The characters and plot were uninteresting. It is a complete waste of time and money. The world would be a much better place if John Romero would not make anymore games.

SHERLOCK HOLMES : Watson! It's dead as a dodo.

DR WATSON : Are you sure?. What must have killed it,Holmes?

HOLMES : The hype of course.....not to forget the long delay, outdated graphics, dumb A.I, frustrating gameplay and all the bugs.

WATSON : Holmes.....Who is your prime suspect ?

HOLMES : Tch Tch Watson, use your grey cells! It's John Romero of course, after professor Moriatry....he's my next 'nemesis'.

WATSON : So what do we do now (Sher)lock ?

HOLMES : Elementary, my dear Watson ?

"I am only left asking, "how long until Daikaitaina 2? "" - Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha!

I really tried to like this game.

I felt like screaming "Turn the lights on!" during the first level. What a murky morass. I installed this game twice and I still can't stand it.

What angers alot of gamers is this: We wonder what games didn't get made because "Daikajokea" sucked up so much cash?

Buggy and Bad Game Play

I bought this gaming expecting a Quake-like experience...but its been nothing but a crash happy game. I'm running a GeForce-powered 800mhz 128 RDRAM pc from Dell, and this thing freezes constantly. Even worse is the game play. Not EVERY weapon should kill every creature with one hit. It's just plain lame and lacks any sense of balance. Spend your money on Quake3 or Unreal Tournament, this this hunk of junk.

We all waited a long time to be killed by frogs! Heck No!

Daikatana is to computer games as Battlefield Earth is to movies. The plot is one-dimensional and does not let you stray, even to the point of letting your supposedly smart teammates (read: more of a hindrance than a help), keep you back. If a man can't figure out how to walk in a straight line across a bridge, why should I trust him in a fight? Additionally, the enemy AI is alternately idiotic or lethal, with little balance between which road is taken. The weapons range from the interesting to the downright Twinkish. The program itself drains a system of precious resources to accomplish what most other games can outdo with less programming, and with better results. This is a game to avoid. For a truly good game experience, stick to something with more plot, better game engine, and more developed player-to-AI interface.

P.S. That One star should be 0, thats right zero stars buddy.

PEARL inside a SHELL !

I understand the vast diversity of comments and judgements regarding this game. It may not be the right choice for everyone. If you're into state of the art graphics and gameplay you will probably not like it.
If ,however, you consider yourself an old school gamer, who still loves Quake 2, HERETIC 2 and the like you will most definitely be mesmerized by this game. Also if you are into great storytelling and fantastic voice acting and sound-effects you are in the right place!
Daikatana is like a pearl in a shell. You need to get past its rough edges to experience its glory!
The game has better, more and less cliched sound effects than most recent playstation and x-box games. It also sports some neat visuals (just crank up the resolution and it still shines). The story is nothing short of incredible and would make an excellent movie. Not to mention the awesome variety of 4 different time periods (and unique weapon sets in each)! Daikatana NEVER gets repetitive! As soon as you think you're getting the idea you move on to a totally different time-period with unique surroundings, sounds, enemies, music, weapons, mission design/quests. Even recent shooters on PC, PS2 and XBOX lack THAT variety! (Trust me, I'm a hardcore player and have experienced games for the last 30 years).
Daikatana also has a unique style: something between sci-fi, martial arts, cartoon and MANGA - everyone who loves Ghost in the Shell and the like must crave!
Personally I love both state-of-the-art games as well as old school games. And, boy, let me tell you: Doom3, Half-Life2 and the like can learn a whole lot in terms of story-telling and sound-design from good old Daikatana!
Give this a shot if you need a break from the state-of-the-art 100 page manual games and what some decent fraggin' and a gaming-world to get lost in for many, many, many hours !
Don't listen to the critics - they are not always right. You may really miss out on something cool: the PEARL inside the SHELL.

Would've, Could've, Should've Been Great

As an avid fan of the FPS genre for the past few years, I have been eagerly waiting for Daikatana to reach the retailer's shelves. For the most part I have been patient with Ion Storm hoping that every time it was delayed would just mean that the programers were continuing to find ways to improve on its design. Since the popular thing to do these days is to make multiplayer-only games I had hoped that Daikatana would be the perfect compliment to games such as Q3A and UT. Unfortunatly, I was mistaken. The first problem I had was with my Voodoo 3 3000 video card. Apparently, Daikatana will not run with any video card in the Voodoo family unless you rewrite 4 lines of code in the .cfg files. Now, I understand that because evry computer is different it is impossible to ship a game without any bugs; however, Voodoo cards are some the most widely used video cards around and after putting $35 I felt that having to tweak the code is unexceptable. As gameplay, graphics, sound, etc. go it is a mixed bag. The gameplay is decent, not revelutionary, but it does not try to be. Your sidekicks add an extra demension but their fun and usefulness wear off quickly as they do not always do as you order and often get in your way in the heat of battle. The graphics are exceptable, but certainly not up to par with today's games. This of course shoud have been expected with the use of the Quake II engine and the many delays. The biggest problem with the visuals is at the start of the game. When shooting flying enemies I often got turned around and in a sense "lost". This was due to the fact that in the marsh level the colors and backgorunds are almost exactly the same through out; however, this does not pose a problem in the later levels. There really is not too much to comment on about the sound, it is simply run of the mill. Daikatana really shines in two places. The first, is the the single player game. In a time where games continue to move toward being singuraly multiplayer Daikatana is a breath of fresh air with its solid story and interesting characters. The second place that it shines in is in its uniqueness. The odd locales and weaponry somewhat makeup for the game's plentiful shortcomings. Since, to this point, I have mainly played the single player missions i feel that i have not given enough time to review the multiplayer portion of the game, but from what i have seen and heard so far I believe that it is adequete. Many gamer may blame the time that it took to finish Daikatana for its uninspired gameplay and dated graphics. i believe that this is somewhat true, but when you look at Blizzard's classics like Starcraft and Diablo which took forever to come out and where great this argument loses some of its merit. John Romero may have lost some of his golden touch; however I am not ready to write him off. No ne is perfect and i believe that he has many great games left in him just not this one.

What is Romero Thinking?

I am going to make this short but true. First off this game is HARD or at least what I played. this game is no Shoot them all like Quake 2 or anything. I found this game Repugent. I don't even want to try it again. I don't care if you have 1000 weapons, if you can't beat the first stage with Ease, then forget about the rest. The Graphics in this game are Dated back to the DOOM age. This 5 year opus did not pan out like I wanted. I really thought John Romero actually had some skill but it seems not. The game might have good points but the save system (save only if you have a crystal?) is an abomination. This is a horrible idea which is seen way too much in Console System games, but never should have made it to the PC. I admit Ion Storm Made has made a killer game (Deus Ex) but this one is just a pile of turds. Bargin Bin Box. I also just want to close with this. We can now see the real genius behind Doom, and Doom 2, was John Carmack, not John Romero. Sorry about being rude and mean, but this game is really horrible, and I just want to be honest.

What a disappointment

This game is a major disappointment. As I played the game, I repeatedly thought "What were the designers thinking?"

I'm an avid first-person shooter (FPS) player. I have played every major FPS game out there. The first level of Daikatana, for example, is one of the least fun levels in an FPS I have ever played, ever. It's very challenging, but that is because many annoying frogs and mosquitoes attack you and all you have to defend yourself is a badly-designed gun that shoots bouncing green goo. This gets old very quickly. (The game designers compare this to the fast-paced action of Doom, but Doom is actually fun, and this is incredibly annoying.) The level itself has a boring design, and is split up into pieces, with a "Loading" screen and pause separating them a la Half-Life, except the load times are much longer and are accompanied by a headache-inducing sound effect. In addition, you must collect "Save Gems" in order to save your game. For a few minutes I thought "Save Gems" was simply a misspelling of "Save Games," thinking that no sane game designer these days would put such a ridiculous savegame system in a game. It makes you want to pull your hair out when you've just fought off tons of those frogs and mosquitoes for an hour but die before you find a Save Gem. Save Gems are a thinly-veiled attempt at making the game more difficult without actually designing it better.

Why put up with this junk when there are many better games out there to spend your money on?

I had high expectations for Daikatana. It was overhyped, and of course it couldn't live up to that hype, and that is understandable. But sadly, Daikatana fails miserably even trying to be average. If you're in the market for this sort of game, look almost anywhere else and you'll find a better game.
