I was looking forward to this game but was I ever dissapointed. I thought these poker games could only get better, was I wrong. The graphics are horrible and the gameplay is extremly slow and there is no way to speed it up. Save your money and use it to play poker for real, you will have much more fun.

Best Poker Game on the market!

This is by far the best Poker game on the market. The AI is excellent (play on PRO for a very very challenging game) The graphics are great, and the customization is amazing. Online is a lot of fun too. All in all, a great Poker game.

Really great poker game

I bought this game about a week ago and can't put it down. It has a lot of depth to it. The poker play in single player is really challenging. You can also identify the types of players you are up against. You can look through their history and see how they bet. Online it has players entire history, amazing. I use it and take full advantage. So many tight players out there. Little advice for you all out there, if you check and call 70% of the time, that is way too much. It keeps your own stats too and I must admit my stats looked a bit tight too. The online is a ball because you can create really cool our really funky characters. There is also a way to create your own games which is a time consuming entertaining task in itself. Online has a thing where you can make funny faces with your character too which just makes for that much more fun. I thought this game was going to just be poker but it really has a lot to it.

Loads of fun....er, I mean frustration

I originally bought this game just to have a poker game to play online with the XBox. I didn't have any high expectations, and 2KSports certainly didn't disappoint. The graphics are uninspired, the commentary is repetitive and cheesy, and the game play is only so-so. There is no AI.....the computer seems to just play according to a set of rules based on certain conditions. It doesn't study your play and adapt to it, so even the gameplay gets a little boring. But once you play on XBox Live, that's when the headaches really begin. First of all, there are no tournaments or leagues to play in. Just sit down at a table and play. There's nothing to really shoot for, no goals to set, except for fattening your bankroll, and you get nothing for doing that. There are also several glitches in the online play....you cannot be assured that your winnings at any given table will be banked. The next time you play, you've got a better than average chance of your previous winnings being gone. There are also some serious connectivity issues. There's nothing like having pocket rockets, going all-in pre-flop and then the game locks up and boots everyone. And it's not just an isolated incident....it happens very frequently. Check out the forums at 2KSports' website....you'll see that there a quite a few people there that have been having these and other problems.

Very... Meh

How hard is it to make a good poker game? This game got a fairly positive review from XBOX Magazine, so I decided to get it.

Pros
1. It has online play
2. Create a character has depth (BUT YOU CAN'T NAME HIM??? WHAT THE...)
3. The players are unpredictable at least...
4. Lots of tutorials, game types, etc. This is the best feature. It has unlimited lasting-time.
5. You can skip hands when you fold, and that speeds things up dramatically.
6. Creative Player Names

Cons

1. Atrocious graphics. It shames the XBOX name. The players always have their mouths open and look like they've seen a ghost frequently. A aggravating sidenote: All the women are old and fat. Further, there seems to be an unproportional number of African American's compared to everyone else. I haven't seen one latino, one Asian, but 3/5 of the people are African American. Strange.
2. The facial expression thing (controlled by the right thumbstick) is pointless.
3. Players bluff far too much and are too content to call your all-in with 23 and win against AK (I Hate "Ken U Diggett").
4. Game creation mode is very weak. Basically you combine elements of other games. I created "Scottum" and it is no limit Hi-Lo Omaha with deuces wild. That's about as creative as you can get... and that's not very creative.
5. Biggest Flaw- Half the hands end up with 2 players checking until the river.
6. There's about 3 different voice types for each gender so you here 2 guys saying "hmmm... check" in the same voice over and over again.

Random Aggravations;
1. When a player folds before the flop, sometimes they say "I think you have me beat, I fold". Who has you beat? Nobody raised.
2. Other tables seem to have wild action compared to yours. I have a nice healthy stack of 3000 and I'm winning the table. All of a sudden "Marsha Mello" joins the table and has 7500 and steals all the pots.
3. I still can't get over the fact that I can't name my player.
4. Players chip stacks don't look different from each other
5. When a player puts chips into the put (to call or raise), the chips disappear. Not to mention the horrible graphic of the player seeming to levitate the chips into his/her palm.
6. I always lose all-ins even though I almost always have the best hand. Maybe the AI gets a luck advantage because some of them don't know what they're doing, although some players are very good.
7. The big blind always calls your pre-flop raise unless it's more than half of their chips... no matter what they have.

3 stars because it's better than all the other poker games. Abundance of game types is great, and the gameplay isn't THAT bad. I just wish the AI would be smarter (and my QQ not to lose to KQ 90% of the time)

I Totally agree with Scott from Boston

I don't know who you are Scott, but everything you said in your review is 100% correct and accurate about World Poker Tour. My friend and I have been saying those exact same things you mentioned for about 6 months now. Also, how hard IS it to make a good looking poker game? There is not that much going on in the background, and it seems like that would be a really simple thing to do. Plus, anybody who knows how to play poker with any amount of skill knows that there is no way you would play 3/4 of those joke show hands in real life at a poker table. I just want a good, solid REALISTIC poker game to come out that is fun and challenging.

Definitely worth a try

I'd like to adress a few things that other reviewers have written about this game, but first I'd like to give my own opinion.
For the three months that I've owned it, I've found WPT to be a very fun, very addictive game. It offers a variety of options in regards to style of play (In the quick draw section you can choose from any number of poker variations including Omaha, 7 card stud, 5 card stud, 5 card draw...) and also includes an in-depth career mode. The only real negative about the career mode would be the fact that it can be somewhat repetetive, involving playing the same tournaments over and over. However, as you progress the difficulty increases, and you'll find that your rabid raising, maniac style that got you into the tournament finale won't work against better opposition, thus forcing the player to employ different strategies for different opponents,
which brings me onto my next positive point about this game, the AI...
As you play table after table of world class poker tournaments, you will encounter a countless array of ridiculously named Poker Sims (Ollie Cherhat, Di Nomite, Asa Spades....)... As stupid as their names are, they will provide you a worthy challenge, as between them they represent many different styles of poker play... Some of them are Maniacs, some of them bluff compulsively, some of them will Slow play every hand (And occaisionally drive you broke in the process), some of them will check-raise you pre-flop... All in all it makes for intereting play...

Another interesting element of this game is the emotion toggle that you can use with the right thumbstick. By pushing the thumbstick in each direction you can represent a different emotion by using facial expression... I don't know how efective it is in progressing in the game, but hey, it's fun. Hitting the "Gloat" expression is always a laugh when you flip over those pocket aces and view your opponents dismay...

Now to adress some of the negative remarks made about the game....

*Not being able to name your Create-a-player
This is false. You can name your player anything you want. At the player select screen all you need to do is select "Empty" and the game will allow you to create a player from scratch, name and all... The only time you can't name a player is if you select "Player" rather than "Empty"...

*The players are unpredictable
I can't get my head around this one... Isn't this what makes the game fun? Unpredictable play is what forces those tough decisions out, in my eyes it only makes the game more challenging...

*All the women are old and fat
To tell the absolute truth, I didn't notice this one, but there are a few fat old women in this game... There are also fat old men.... And when you get to the "Pro" stages of the game, you get to view cut scenes of the lovely Shana Hiatt... So really, everybody wins!

I don't really have any issues with the graphics, they look pretty standard to most stuff on the xbox... But the important thing for me was the gameplay, and I found it very enjoyable... This game may not be fast-paced enough for some, but I'd recommend giving it a go, particularly if you love your poker... It's a bit of fun...

My first impressions of the game

I've just played the game for two days (but for hours long) and here's my view of it:
The AI seems pretty realistic. The cards are suffled ramdomly it appears and there are not present hands that each player gets. Some people were complaining that the players are "unpredictable", well call me old-fashioned but isn't that what poker IS ABOUT: unpredictability? If you want predictability from your foes, well there's the Mario Bros games.
I think the AI gets getting harder and harder as the game progresses, and if you have played chess against a computer, they really hard to beat. I haven't been able to get past the Satellite tournament so far. I'm having fun with the game, but honestly they could have paid a couple of temps to do the talking with at least 100 different sentences instead of the 5 sentences the pros say in the game like "that's what poker is all about...(end of sentence)". I get bored of the same freaking sentence all the time. Put some spice in it darn it. The graphics are a disgrace, I agree with you all, but I hope the AI makes up for it.
The freaking blinds go up every two hands, and thats pretty unrealistic. You can't play good poker like that, because you just have to go all in with whatever hand you got. Just make them go up like in a regular tournament. It's okay if they last long.

This Is Way Better than the World Series Of Poker Game
You can play as any of the WPT Pros But in WSOP You Have to create your own player and on WPT you can play in real casinos but in WSOP you can only play in one.

WPT is the best poker game you can buy A Age 14
