I am not usually a video game person but my boyfriend wanted the game so i got it for him. I used to play Nintendo back in high school and was pretty good at the whole eye hand coordination thing. It was great playing against my beau and kicking his butt in ever round. I 'm better than I expected. THe graphics are cool, and I like how the strength of the player is depicted in the looks of the character. My beau doesn't want to play that game with me any more but it's still a great game.
Why it's a great game.

There is alot of good points to this than most of you are naming. First I love the diffuculty in preforming combos as it makes you feel like you are experiencing the diffuculty the fighters have when they had to learn it. Also I take Kenpo/Karate and believe me that combos are the only way to go, why bother for a game that involves 1 or 2 hits when you can do combos. Something that I love about this game is realisticness of the moves, no soul charge, or any of those ridiculous Soul Caliber moves. Yes I know theres the Chi moves, but who doesn't believe in an inner energy, our inner strength, of course not to the degree of Soul Calibur (I don't hate Soul Calibur I actually love the game, but when it comes to realistic moves and fighting, Tao Feng: Fists of Lotus is the way to go. Also Each character has a deep storyline and history, giving them depth and a defining personality so you are able to realate with them and fine a fighter thats like you, feeling attached to them. While Mortal Kombat may have Storylines most of the fighters storylines from that game are pretty hard to relate to with the excepting of a few like Lou Kang, Shoujinko, but the others have such crazy stories that wich is hard to relate to. Overall Tao Feng is an extemely good game. I do so hope they make a sequel in which you can use weapons and I hope they make a movie out of the game!
Not much new ground broken, but plenty of bones!

While I will concur with the sentiment that Tao Feng is a pretty average game on the whole its just as far from being horrible as it is from being exceptional.
The limb damage system seems like an idea that was either tacked on at the last second or quickly reworked in a more simple context than originally intended. I've yet to see anything besides arms be broken and the conditions that cause damage seem to be simply "punishing mid-section attacks" rather than "targeted shots" as eluded to in the game's description. If nothing else, it gimps people who like to block too much and is funny to watch when a fighter is hobbling around with limp arms.
Amusement factor is definitely where this game shines. A decent stereo system combined with the fluid and downright punishing graphic effects makes for a rather giggle-infested ride. Anyone with an appreciation for excessive violence will likely cackle in glee to the tune of bouncing an opponent off walls and into floors while plaster, glass and other assorted building materials are thrown up in chunks.
The ability to actually use the evironment in fights is probably the most notable aspect of the game and certainly something unique to typical fighting games.
In my experience the game's pace moves fairly quickly contrary to some other reviews. Given that your fighters are pretty quick on their feet and feature a number of moves that cover alot of ground really quick.
The graphics and sound are quite nice overall with a few low points to be had in the former category. Notably the times when an opponent is "popped up" into the air or when one of the fighters execute a "corkscrew" manuver really look very cheesy and out of place in a game that otherwise boasts very nice fluid graphics.
Not a bad buy if you're looking for something to kick around with friends since the fighting system is admitedly not as technically-inclined as some others. Just good old-fashioned beatdown fun.
The Alternate Stance

Saying that firey Pheonix is the best character in the game means you truely havent mastered the Alternate Stance, the alternate stance takes slow moving Exile and gives him grace like divinity,
when you take this option and a couple people who know how to use it the fight could go either way, and its almost imposible to beat me with divine fist and iron monk and if you havent mastered the alternate stance the most unstoppable character is the Fatalist......
The limb damage isnt the best part of the game its the reality of it all, the moves are very realistic that make it look like a properly coriographed movie.
the only flaws in this game are the veiw changes and you go from blocking to being beatin senseless and the game itself is really short and should have a few more charcters and unlockable features...and the biggest problem is that theres no sequel still this game needs a little faster and brutal number 2 so they could take a great fighting game and make it the best.
OK Game

This game I had high hopes for. I thought it was going to be incredible, but I was sort of disappointed. I like the graphics and I thought it looked great 90% of the time. The women are hot, and there is a dude in the game called Divine Fist that looks just like Jet Li. Divine Fist looks like Jet Li, but he is pretty weak and is easily beaten. Iron Monk is the best male character in the game and Jade Dragon is the best looking female character in the game. Though the story of the game takes place in China and supposedly based on Chinese mythology, not all the characters are Chinese. There is one female character called Geist aka Gei Yi, supposed to be a Chinese assasin from Macau, but looks like she's of African descent. Well other than these little oddities, the graphics are good and story has potential. The major problem is the gamability. Characters are hard to use, and they can't block. I hit the block button and it has no affect. The hits don't look solid, and the hitting motion looks ridiculously fast. It's not as good as is advertised on the DVD keep case. For the price, it might not be that bad though, but I recommend "Dead Or Alive 3", the best fighting game in XBOX,and "Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance", the second best fighting game in XBOX rather than, or in inclusion to this game.

Tao Feng is a below average fighting game. It's best feature is the limb damage and nice graphics, but everything else in the game is a miss. the controls are sluggish. You'll notice a slight delay when you press the buttons to the character on screen responding to it a second later. Sound effects are weak and you can barlely hear the smacks. The novelty in this game is that when you block attack too much you can have limb damage in your arms or legs. You'll see the characters limping and do less damage when they attack. But they can repair their injuries when they do combo moves on you, which defeats the whole purpose of "limb damage". The fighting techniques are uninspired and lack that extra -oomph-. The character's animation look a bit stiff and lack fluidity which other fighting games have. In addition to the stiffness, the characters are very ugly looking. They look like platic action figures and have a bunch of tattoos on their bodies. There are only a few fighting arenas and they are mostly dark settings. There is only a few unlockables and they are not satifying. There are better fighting games out
there, save your money for those.
Pros:
+nice graphics
+good sound effects
+limb damage
Cons:
-ugly character designs
-uglier music
-unresponsive controls
-combos are hard to pull off
-difficult to block attacks
-short game
-weak animation
-dark looking arenas
-lacks intensity
-fighting techniques look generic
One of the poorest fighting games yet

I'll first preface this by saying that contrary to the catch-all statement used by many of the 5-star raters for this game, indeed I am a very experienced and very skilled fighting game player who has played numerous games up to Tao Feng. Furthermore, I have taken the time to learn the ungodly combos for this game and have used various characters, and still I find the game to rate 1 out of 5 (would be less if possible).
The gameplay is quite disjointed, as it is completely lacking in fluidity. Oftentimes landing a hit (or block) is a game of Russian roulette; when two people battle it out with combos, the luck of the draw appears to be the main factor between being nailing a two to eight hit combo on your opponent, and being forced to helplessly accept that combo with no opportunity to counter or block. Further, the characters are so dissimilar, and so disproportionate in abilities, that there are plenty of opportunities for an opponent to continue to use one character, and merely repeat the "cheap shots" that one must endure invariably, depending on the character they he or she has chosen.
Unlike most fighting games, it is difficult to tell the proper time to block or otherwise evade a hit/combo. The disproportion among the fighters, along with the poor gameplay, as well as jerky movements and animation, make for an unpleasant gaming experience when compared to other fighting games. Granted, the graphics may be impressive, but not enough to make up for the lacking in the other areas.
Save your money and pass this one up (or at least rent it before you buy it).

Fun well executed fighting game that tries to do something different. The people who hate this game obviously just want the same old same old all the time. Don't listen to them, this is a very fun game, especially against another player.
Surprisingly good!!

Previous reviews on the game kept me from purchsing this game. Unsuspectedly, I received it as a gift this x-mas, and it is better than I thought it would be. The only thing is that the voices sound weird, but not the music, the music is good it is the voices of the characters which sound echoed and like they are coming thourgh a metal tube. Other than that it is pretty decent game. I especially like the idea of the wounding and limb damage, which makes perfect sene for a fighting game. Still Mortal Kombat is way better.
The plague upon plagues.

When I purchased this product my brain must have been suffering from a chemical imbalance. The gameplay experience is so bad I should compare it to being kicked in the crotch for days on end. While it looks good it doesn't make up for the fact that you are controlling a character that can't block or link a combo to save his pathetic ass, which in turn makes him not a fightng game character but a uncontrollable madman that despite you best intentions will doze off in the middle of a battle and proceed to have the enemy pummel him into the ground with a 13+ combo.
AVOID ALL THINGS CONCERNING THIS GAME!
I don't care if it involves you shooting your way out of the situation it still will not scar you mentally nearly as much as this game.
