One of the best Marvel games ever!

This game is really good! Although it doesn't vary much the gameplay across stages, the characters are so faithful to the comics (and therefore different among themselves) that you'll really enjoy it!! The storyline is simple at first, but intrincate and functional as the game progresses, and the scenaries are very interactive. Also, the cards and comics and movies you unlock during the game are really worthwile!!
I strongly recommned for every comics fan!

Good game mechanic and decent pace.

I was reluctant to purchase this game due to the mediocre reviews on some of the game sites, so I decided to buy a used copy. I have played the game for about 3 hours, and I'm pleased with the game so far.

The story is not that deep, and the production quality of the cut scenes for the origin story of the Imperfects are not as good as the rest of the games. They use real life actors with narration to tell the stories. The dialog is fairly short, so the voice acting isn't much of a factor. However, the story mode does a decent job of adding variety to the fights. The story mode should be thought of as several story modes for each character that seem to be related. Imagine watching a movie where the characters are separated through the city and have to battle villains on their own. You just jump from one character to the next as you progress through their story. As you finish each mission you are taken back to a mission selection screen where you can choose from at most 4 character missions. Sometimes less than 4 missions are available and you regain options as missions and characters unlock. A co-op mode in the story mode would have been a good addition, but because of the nature of the character specific story lines, this may be difficult to implement. Here is a list of the different objectives I've encountered so far.

-Standard one on one fight in the different environments.
-Defeat an enemy given a time limit.
-Destroy a number of different enemies like robots and flying machines.
-Throw a number of enemies off the environment like a bridge.

The environments have plenty of destructible objects that can be used during the fight. The look and feel is dark as most of the fights occur in the evening. There's often plenty of room to fight, so you can hide behind objects or get some distance to allow your character to heal or restore his/her powers when you get in trouble.

I haven't been able to find anyone online through XBOX Live, but I haven't tried very much. I haven't played many versus games. The reviews mention that the characters are not balanced. I haven't found it too imbalanced, but the characters do play differently. Some of them have some similarities like Spider-Man, Venom, and Dare Devil. There's an Imperfect character that plays similar to Storm. The fights have varied in length from 30 seconds to 5 minutes for me depending on how I chose to play.

The fight mechanic is fun. The close combat isn't as deep as some of the other fighter games. You mainly have a weak and strong attack which responds differently with a jump or a direction. You can pick up and throw objects as well as catch objects thrown to you if timed correctly. Some characters have different abilities such as shoot items for ranged attacks, fly, lift heavier objects, transport, or heal. You can also block, but I haven't gotten the hang of it. Some times it seems to be effective, but sometimes not. This may depend on the enemy and the type of attack they're using. Most of the characters can also do a power block which can deflect ranged attacks from the enemy.

If you're a Marvel fan and like the roster, I would recommend this game especially for a used price. If you expect a deep story mode and leveling system like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, then do some more research on this game.

A great game...

As this was a gift I am writing this review on behalf of my brother. He really enjoys playing the game and described it as "playing in a superhero movie." I hope you enjoy it, too.

Multiplayer Yes, Story No

I'm just going to do a quick rant on how this game is built

Pros:

1. The multi-player fighting mode is fun and very entertaining.
2. Good characters

1. The game is frustrating to play in story mode because all of the elements are off and not tweaked to perfection... example: Magneto as a boss is easier to kill than a robot who shoots a beam at you in the level.
That shouldn't be even possible!
2. The robots are insanely good towards the end.
3. Who wants to keep destroying robots
4. Graphics aren't that great, but have a gothic feel to them.
5. Overall just isn't that great of a game.

how the heck do you beat van roekel?

Luckily I got this game on sale. All the other reviewers that commented on the level of frustration endured are absolutely right. This is one of those games where you wonder whether you're *finally* beating the bosses because there's a 1/100 chance of beating them and you just ended up playing it 100 times.

That said, anyone have any suggestions for how to beat van roekel? I can't find anyway to turn off his power recharge and he just keeps gaining all his health back.

Not As Bad As You Have Heard...

I put off purchasing this title for about a year because of the bad press it got, but as a lifelong comics fan I was always curious about it.When this game was released, there were many more comics games that were released: Xmen Legends 2, Ultimate Spiderman, Hulk Ultimate Destruction. Also Mortal Kombat Deception was released. I believe that this is chiefly the reason that Marvel Nemesis was not received well. Comparisons were made with Mortal Kombat, but its not a fighting game like MK. It doesnt have the depth that Xmen Legends 2 has because it is not a RPG. This game is a brawler, pure and simple, in the style of Super Smash Brothers Melee. It does have its problems: on easy its still ridiculously difficult at times, as cannonfodder enemies pass you around between them like a doobie, the inability to properly target flying enemies 90% of the time, and the fact that some missions are so repetitive, it makes you want to die. However, the story is well done, the visuals are excellent, and the character animations really capture the essence of each character. The game has a great comic style to it, with great hand drawn artwork from the Marvel Nemesis comic in the menus. If you like comics and enjoyed Super Smash Bros, pick this game up.

Marvel Nemesis is adictive to play but.....

I get easily frustrated, annoyed and confuse when playing that game. I played games like that and this one of the games that looks good, character wise. The fighting system is limited with one button to press, the camera angle is a joke, the blocking is confusing and all and all it's sloppy and there are no target system where you can target your enemies.
I could not beat the entire game though it is still adictive and fun to play I still get frustrated from that game. If you're an amatuer like me then don't buy it there are better games than this one, but if you're a fan of the game then go for it.

A good buy

To those who said this game was not the worth the money. What are you smoking? You might want to remember to take your medication in the morning. This is an extremely fun game. I would recommend it to any person who likes to play video games. It is a must buy for any great gamer. I am a big fan of video games that let you play as super heroes, so if your like me you will like this game. It has an awesome multiplayer mode. The story mode is also a lot of fun. Take my advice. Buy this game.

This game ROCKS!!!

Marvel Nemesis is an incredible game! Here's my review,
(5=awesome,1=terrible)
Story-4 1/2
The story line is about Dr. von Roekel, who designs Super humans known as the "Imperfects", who has made an alliance with aliens, and they invade, and, yes, you gussed it, the Marvel heroes try to save the day and fight off the invaders and Imperfects. The idea is sort of expected, but it's a great game.
Characters- 5
In Marvel nemesis, you can play as good guys or villains, each with unique abilities and powers. Plus, you can do vs on it, so if you want to brawl with Wolverine or Venom you can.
Graphics-5
the graphics are possibly the best ever! You can really see Wolverine's blades shining or face features on Daredevil! This game has very realistic graphics!
Music-3 1/2
Although the spooky fiddling when you die is good, this soundtrack isn't great.
Worth your money- yes!
If you're a Marvel fan or if you're just looking for a really good fighting game, Marvel Nemesis:Rise of the Imperfects is for you!

Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects is an action slash head to head fighter that truly delivers on all that is promised.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects is a two player action slash head to head fighter that truly delivers on all that is promised. You can choose from multiple Marvel Characters and either fight along side other Marvel heroes to thwart the scourge that is the Imperfects or just beat the crud out of your friends in multi player. This in all honesty is where the game truly shows its grit.

Graphics- 9
The graphics in Nemesis are an absolute joy to look at. The characters are very well planned out and executed. The levels while a bit tedious and repetitive, also have a high level of detail and interactivity. While the latter mostly includes picking up things and tossing them at people, still it's interactive. Pretty much everything in this game looks great and the Marvel characters are dead on accurate, though don't go looking for classic costumes, new game, new look.

Game play- 8
There are two sides to the game play in this title. Single player while fun, is not this games high point. The single player bit consists of an exclusive story line introducing the imperfects and explaining their wants and needs, blah, blah. You know the drill bad guys trying to take over the world, good guys trying to stop it. It has a great little two sided tail, meaning you get to play both good and bad guys, but still it's nothing new action game wise. But the single play suffers from repetitive level design and a pain in the butt A.I.. That makes it tough, but some times makes it pointlessly tough. Still its fun and you're playing as a super hero, so win some lose some. Multiplayer, now that's where this game shines. You and a friend can just go at it in a classic super hero fight and for once you actually feel like a super hero. Depending on who you are you can fly, shoot fire, throw cars, sling webs, fire laser beams, call forth lighting, pretty much what ever your super hero character can do in the comics, you can do against your opponent. The game allows for timed matches or life matches, so you can go at it for as long as you want. Also, if you're friendless at a particular time and still want to get some clobbering time in that game allows for bot matches, so you can always play.

Sound- 6
The sound in Marvel Nemesis is not very enthusiastic in the way that there's nothing too special. The Characters all have voices, but no real scripts, just smack talk. The special powers all sound good, but nothing great. And the music, well that's very bland, again not bad, just nothing super cool or anything. Just your basic video game sound. I do give it a little extra due to the object throwing and bashing does sound really well, it's just not enough to merit the rest of the boring sound.

Control- 9
Controls are simple, yet effective. You have your attack, block, jump, and grab buttons. A trigger for running and a trigger the makes all the pervious buttons mentioned super. So you can be throwing punches one second, hold down the super button and be setting people a blaze in the next second. It all works out really well surprisingly and is not that hard to figure out. Plus once you get it down you start to feel really cool when you start running up walls and grabbing people out of the air. Takes a few minutes to get down, but eventually your flying like a true hero.

Overall- 8
All in all Marvel Nemesis needs to be in anyone's collection that likes fighters, comics, or the two combined. Even people with no prior fighting knowledge or who missed out on the comics should pick this title up. It truly gives you the feel of being a super hero and gives one a good view of what a fight between giants would be like. From throwing a taxi at a friend, to raining down lighting you really feel as though you are who you picked. Be it The Thing, Wolverine, Storm, Iron Man, even Magnito, you'll feel like they just plugged in a comic and let you go wild. Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects is a great title for any one looking for a good two player game and a must own for any true comic fan.
