Deserves to be the best Xbox game of the year

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

If you are about to switch to an Xbox 360, buy this game first as your last Xbox game, you won't be disappointed. This game has the best graphics I have ever seen on a console. Although it has great graphics, the physics are the real selling point. You can pick up virtually anything in the world and throw it around or stack it with the Gravity Gun (Zero-Point Energy Manipulator). Barrels float in the water like they should and explosions are suprisingly realistic. The enemies and challenging and varied and dead bodies flop around like they should (especially when you shoot them with the shotgun). The voice acting is very well done and characters will turn to look at you if you move around. The only drawback is choppy framerates at times. Highly recommended!

Great game.

Well, I'm a little late as this game has been out for some time now. So long in fact that you can't even buy the XBox version from Amazon itself, but from others in the Amazon Marketplace (new, used), which is what I did. I was a little skittish at first to order it in this way, but it worked out very well. In fact, I may have recieved it sooner than if I had been able to purchase it from Amazon. The person must have shipped it the very same day.

The graphics are really good for an Xbox title. I also played the PC demo, so I know the graphics on the PC are much better. One of the problems with having an XBox version is you can't play "Episode 2". You also can't play multiplayer, it isn't even an option. I thought it odd it had no multiplayer, then I read in another review that the PC version DOES have multiplayer.

A few problems I had with this game were minor. I'm not sure if it's the XBox controls, or just the game, but I would have trouble many times trying to do something as simple as get through a door. I'd just get kind of get hung up for no reason that I could see (no clutter around me). There was a lot of clutter in the game. Not so much a bad thing, but sometimes it could make a simple task of walking hard as there was always stuff laying around.

I also noticed some slow points as the XBox had trouble keeping up with the action. This isn't a game issue. In fact, I have a first gen XBox. You may find a later generation works a little better.

There are two driving levels. I found them to be a pain. The controls for the vehicles are not very good. And, they just seem to go forever. It may have been better if they split them up a bit. They went on so long I found myself getting dizzy and had to take a break.

Some aspects of the game were just amazing. As much as I'd like to tell you about them, I don't want to spoil anything. I know I didn't expect them, and it gave me a "WOW!" moment more than once.

This isn't a straight up shooter like the Halo series. In many places you have to figure out how to get to the next area. This can be frustrating. I found myself in a room for about 15 minutes as I swam to the same places I had been to many times trying to figure out what the heck I missed. And, it's always something really simple that makes you slap yourself on the head.

One really nice thing about this game is the length. I'm not sure how long it took me to beat it, but it was quite a few hours. This is nice when you think of other games that only have about 7 to 10 hours of gameplay. It really makes it feel like you got your moneys worth, even if it did only cost 12 bucks...lol

WTF STOP LOADING!!!!

Half-Life 2 for pc put on the x-box sounds like it should work. The core gameplay is still the same and is good fun once you get a few hours into it. The graphics are decent but won't blow you away like the pc versian. So what's the problem it's Half-life 2 on the x-box just a little watered down. Well there is one single problem that really irritates me to the point i would give it three stars. L.O.A.D.I.N.G!!!! This game loads more than you actually play it. It simply ruins the action! Your in the middle of a tense adrenaline pumped chase and your really into it when it all suddenly stops and the game loads. The loading times last between seven to thirty seconds and it really just makes you want to swear at the t.v. screen. Half-life 2 for x-box isn't bad game but it is completley inferior to the p.c. problem which had loading problems as well. It's possibly worth a rental if can sit through all the constant loading but beyond the loading issue it's worth a playthrough. There is no multiplayer and the single player is all your getting so don't buy.

Half Life 2: Pros and Cons

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 8

Pros:

1.Storyline is very detailed. There is a lot of twists and turns. I'm not going to spoil it...find out for yourself :)

2. The weapons are very nice. Everything from the classic crowbar (YAY!) and the gravity gun preform very well. You can damage just about anything in the environment and use it to your advantage.

3. The physics are amazing. Water rippling to things flying through the air is all very well done. Makes you get a real sense of the game.

4. The A.I. is challenging and varified. Also different weapons work better on some than others so it's fun to experiment.

5. THere is no really specific road to follow in this game. You can explore and find secret compartments and stuff.

6. There is actually a bunch of little thinkers in this game. In order to get somewhere, like in a sewage tunnel or over a fence, you may have to do something first, such as flip a switch or put something somewhere. Gives you a challenge.

7. Saving is nice. You can save anywhere in the game. So if you lose, you'll just go back to you last checkpoint.

Cons:

1. It loads a lot. If you have an xbox w/ a lot of games on it it might load slower. I'm not positive though. It runs pretty good on mine but yeah, there is quite a lot of point loading.
(But the game itself makes up for it)

I rated Half-life 2 4/5 stars b/c it is a very good game. It is very accurate with it's gameplay, making it as challenging as fun. Plus who can't resist playing baseball with headcrabs.

i don't know where to start. graphics are beautiful, sound is amazing, controls are simple and flawless. mostly of all, the storyline and game action are what makes this game stand out. gravity gun, that is all i'm gonna say (the thing is awesome). perfect christmas present for anyone who likes shoot-em up/strategy kinda stuff.

Since most of the other reviewers covered most of the game details.I'll just add that I would highly recommend playing this game if your a fan of FPS. It has an epic movie like quality to it , definatly a must play game. Its not just a bread & butter shooter. I completed the game in about 13hrs give or take an hour. And wait till you get to last level ..OH MY ! what a treat. The gravity gun becomes a new and improved deadly weapon due to its unintentional upgrade. And the ending is quite good too, very trippy.

This Spoiled Me...

...because I can no longer look at other FPS games, such as the mindless shooter Black about which many people are raving, without comparing them to Half-Life 2.
This is an excellent game on all points. Highly interactive environment: you can pick up bottles from the street or catch what your enemy may throw at you with your gravity gun, among other nice features. The only perceivable negative for me is that this wasn't released on Xbox 360, which would have allowed for an ever more improved game.
Simply said, Halo made me love shooters, Half-Life 2 reminded me why. But the real question remains: is it better than Halo? Though sacrilegious, I dare say it is superior.
I highly recommend this, even if you do not usually enjoy FPSs.

this game is first of all the greatest thing to hit the x-box since the original halo and valve doesn't need me kissing there ass anymore the average gamer but thank you from all the gamers out there because this is a game that needs to be played by everone it not the standard boom boom bang bang game, well there is that but underneath is much more it is a rare gem ....the level of eviroments is shocking because the xbox is running it at 60 fpr and shooting and picking up objects feel like the objects have weight to them .... when i shot an enemy he would fall of the bridge or object and the body would fall like a body would in real life,,,,,i could go on and on about the game but i say that it worth 50 dollars and it plays great on the 360 the frame rate is smooth and the graphics are smoother...5stars isn't enough to mark this game and it deserves a ten great replay value////

Man. This game...I've tried to review this game more than a few times; the content and quality defy any of my attempts at quantification or categorization. Ughh...I began my FPS life with Goldeneye and never stopped since then, but I have never seen anything like this. The characters...
Anyway. The game is entertaining, if all you're looking for is the "visceral challenge," etc. that it's being advertised for. If all you want is blood splatters, well, this will do it, but do me a favor and go play Resident Evil. These characters...The acting is so real. You've heard of 'Voice Actors,' well, these are *people*. They think, they feel, they are to such an extent that when you finish the game you won't be able to move when the credits roll up...how can it be that this wasn't real? How can it be any less than true? How can I finish Half-Life 2 and not feel the helplessness of Gordon "Freeman" and the people he fought for and could not save? How can this be any less a piece of art than the masterfully constructed scenes of great movies, the eternal questions in literature? How can you play this and not feel moved? This game...
But I've done it again. I will never, I think, be able to define this experience. It is not lifechanging. It does not "desensitize" me to violence, in the words of old women hiding behind septic coats and social "science," it forces the...the player, if such an ugly term can be used to describe the experience of *being* Gordon Freeman, me, to examine the consequences of violence, the costs of "progress" and "freedom," the nature of dictatorship, the essential dangers inherent in a scientific worldview ignorant of a moral compass. But Half Life 2 does not succed on its story or on the issues it raises, although they are compelling. It is more an Odyssey, an epic, a tale told for the joy in tales, in the power of the teller to create worlds beautiful and terrible and full of cold glory, like the steel and sacrifice of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. In today's literay climate, where more novels are published then any other time in history sell progressively worse every year, where art withers on the vine and transforms into moral journalism, the emotive power of Half Life 2 moves us. It...it is a game, I suppose, and many will see it as nothing more. But the artistry is still there: Valve has done what none have done since Tolkein. In the end, this will not be the epitomy of games: like Middle Earth, Valve's Combine-controlled epic earth does not manage to impart a message alongside its artistry, but until now no game could manage to create a believable world which *could* tell a story, full of real characters. Message is easier to make than beauty; there is an innate talent required for beauty. But Soon...Soon, Valve will show us the way. We still have a very long way to go, if games are to mature into true art, but...Valve has made the first glorious, simple step. You owe it to yourself to play this game.
----------------------------------------

Please Understand: Do NOT play this game until you are old enough. 15 is fine; 8 is not. It *is* a mature game and *does* involve mature games. As always, however, just because a child cannot chew it does not mean you should not eat steak: approach it with an open mind and be able to tell the difference between narrative and reality (e.g., please don't kill someone and claim Half-Life made you do it. It didn't.)
