Most underrated game of 2004

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4

Yes, the graphics are weak and the characters are creepy-looking. Yes, the combat is mushy. Yes, there are some swimming sequences that are frustrating as hell. Yes, there was a bug on one of the levels prevented me from continuing, and I had to start over from the beginning.

All that does not matter. I *did* start over from the beginning, because I was having so much fun, because Galleon is an absolute pleasure to play. The act of running, jumping, and climbing from plank to platform to cave wall, hundreds of meters above the ground, in these large, awesome levels, feels so good. Once you get used to the controls (unlike all other games, camera and movement is on one stick, creating great precision in your movement), the game starts to feel psychic; it knows what you want to do almost before you do. Anybody who's walked off a plank in *God of War* will know what I'm talking about - the plank-walking in *God of War* is an exercise in frustration, but the plank-walking in *Galleon* is poetry in motion. There's nothing else like it in videogames today.

Also, the sheer size, form, and color of the levels make for an awesome experience. They have the charm and atmosphere of *Sands of Time* and *Halo* - as the sound of wind whips by you, as you stand on a tall peak on an active volcano in a vast ocean, you can't help but think that you're happy to be there.

This Is A Great Game!!!

I almost passed this one up, but since I couldn't rent it I decided to buy it. The game is actually a lot of fun, because your character is really agile. The developers put a lot of nice touches to the characters and the environment. Butterflies, bats in the caves, wind blowing your clothes and hair, flies and moths buzzing around lanterns, good voices, large environments. The tutorial is great for learning the controls which are not very hard to learn. I'm only about 4 hours into the game and I can't stop playing. The other great part is the story line so far is good too.

My only complaints are the save system and the camera control. I wish I had more control of the saved games. It will save at certain stages of the game for you and Iv'e found a couple save points that you can save whenever you want. The problem is you can't control which of the 12 points you save at. It will save over the oldest one when you reach the max number of saves.

The camera control works great most of the time, but there are times when it would be nice to pan away from your character for a better view.

PROS:
1) Good story
2) Fun to play
3) YOu can scale walls like spider man and jump really far
4) Moving slow will prevent you from falling
5) Graphics are pretty good, because they put life into the world.
6) Large environments
7) You can swim like a Dolpin (Yes it's true)
8) The sound is good too.
9) Great cut-scenes

CONS:
1) Not being able to choose which saves to overwrite
2) Some places it would be nice to have a better camera angel to help find the hidden items
3) Found one bug where I fell through the floor and had to reload

Mostly, this game is far better than some riviews say!

Not as bad as some think

At first play, Galleon looks like an older title with amazing effects. One has to remember that Galleon has been sailing the 7 seas in Europe for the past year. Thankfully, it has finally landed at our ports and graced us with an amazing action/adventure title that lives up to the hype.

I try not to let reviews of games skew my enjoyability, especially if it's a genre I like. Galleon's gruelling, unavoidable tutorial is a tad too painful, but once you're into the story and the action, you're there to stay.

I crave games that leave you with a feeling of satisfaction, and Galleon does just that. My moments of guilty pleasure in this game were when I saw the amazing wind effects on characters, their clothes, and their movement; when I got the hang of swimming; when I mastered the combo moves to earn enough fighting points to pull a really sweet move.

I got this game because of the pirate theme. I was hoping for something like "Pirates, The Legend of Black Kat", but got something totally unplayable.
First, the game is slow getting started, as you have to play through a tutorial which there is no way of skipping. Then the tutorial plays during the game anytime you need to use a certain skill that you've not used before(that is the few times that you actually are playing).
The worst part is that you're not really playing that much. 95% of the time you're looking at cut scenes. This is terrible; I could have paid half the price for a DVD if I had wanted to watch a movie. You take a couple of steps, a cut scene; you move a little more, another cut scene. I hate a lot of cut scenes anyway, I sure don't want a whole game full of them.
There are some fairly decent fighting moves, but you hardly ever get to use them.
If you want to play a game, then this is not for you. If you don't mind sitting and watching something that looks like a poorly animated film, and every once in a while you promt it to the next scene, then go for it.
