I liked the game but... I only gave it a 5 stars because it is DOA, and I am a fan. Dont get me wrong, it is great, but it is just a new version of 1999's PS2 verison DOA: Hardcore. It is nothing new. Sure there are alot of new outfits, and the graphics are better, but I wanted somthing more innovative. Besides, this is not the first fighter to ever be online as others would have you believe, Mortal Kombat Deception is (and MKD is much more innovative). If you love a good fighting game, then get this, butif you dont really care about paying $50 for a few new outfits, then I would get the PS2 verion for a mere $12. It is almost as good for a better price...

Let me get one thing clear before i start,I only gave the game a 4 because I'm sick of Tecmo not putting these games in english. When you're reading subs you're missing the action in the game.Even the characters from the U.S. speak japanese. One of the main reasons why I like DOA2 on PS2 was because the character voice acting was great and it added personality to the characters.Other than that, the game is perfect. The graphics are even better than DOA3, but don't look for a story.I highly recommend that anyone reading this review buy this game.
Hey, it's okay.

The question is, what else is there? I mean we all know fighting games work, right? Well it's just another fighting game. You will have an okay time with it at first, but it will get old really fast. I would highly suggest purchasing Mortal Kombat Deception for the Xbox over this game. The reason I say this is because MK Deception offers you more than just fighting. It offers a puzzle game, and a chess style game along with the normal game, and you get tons of unlockable characters, which you can do by playing a 3D adventure. As far as Dead or Alive Ultimate goes, it's not worth the money. All you can do is fight, and that's it... Nothing else, no suprises, no rewards, no nothing... Prepare to get bored after playing this game for about an hour.

I read somewhere that Tecmo only releases this game to the most highly-capable (at least graphics-wise) console, "and as a result all versions were released to different consoles." I was surprised, though, to see when I bought this game that it was a remake of DOA 2, the Dreamcast version. Make no mistake, though, plenty of advancements were made. The Dreamcast's version had superb graphics, and with 733 MHz to work with this time around, these are the most stunning graphics I have ever seen. As well, new levels were added, including an awesome aquarium level. Each character has over 12 outfits to unlock (haven't passed this number yet), and the levels are now interactive environments. Speaking of improvements, the operahouse level has embers all over the place, something the Dreamcast might've been taxed trying to do. Also comes with the original DOA, never released stateside. On a minus note, the fighting engine is my least favorite. Wasn't a fan of part 2, and it remains unchanged in this version. Every other button seems to be a dead button, though they are really blocks and counters that have to be atomically timed in order to execute. Moreover, button mashers dominate this game. The controls aren't such where intuition prevails. Some moves require like 16 button presses, and button mashers will pull them off most often- on you. Also, the infamous combos of this game can exceed 7 hits, which can be frustrating. A visually stunning game, as no character looks ordinary, but is that enough to dominate the genre? Not in my book. Street Fighter Anniversary (PS2) is the way to go...

Although I am not a fan of DOA's, Virtua Fighter's, Tekken's, and other "modern fighting games'" play mechanics, I was actually considering buying this game. I'm glad I rented it instead.
This was supposed to be a remake of both Dead Or Alive 1 and 2 with upgrades. Instead, Dead or Alive Ultimate ends up as just another port. Sure it has extra outfits and stages and online play for those who can afford the excruciating monthly broaband fees, but it fixes none of the information problems in training mode, the characters are hard to control, and the optional English Language Dialogue that was in DoA 2 Hardcore for the PlayStation 2 has been stripped from the X-Box version.
As for the Dead or Alive series in general, if I want confusing combo moves, I'll play one of those stupid dancing games. I hope this isn't the future of fighting games and that "Street Fighter" gameplay will come back again.
As good as any other top fighter, just nicer graphics.

DOA ultimate is a good fighter. It is probably third when compared to its contemporaries, Soul Calibur II and Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. I personally feel that including DOA 1 was useless, but some people like it. If you are a fighter nut and have never tried DOA I'd say get it. All you need to remember is as soon as you open it go to the place in the manual about the counter system, and learn it well. It is the key to success. It is easy to some people, hard to others. Like in real martial arts, you need to be able to determine the angle of the attack before it gets far, the differences in the game being high, mid, and low, like other fighters. Train your eye in this and DOA 2 ultimate won't be impossible, but still a challenge.
I am a martial arts buff, so my only complaint about DOA 2 Ultimate is the lack of realism. The counter system is about as close as it gets to real martial arts. The Ninja characters (why do we need 3 of them?) are the most prominent example. This is no big deal, since every single fighter ever made has some unrealistic stuff in it, even Virtua Fighter 4. It just serves to make things interesting. It probably has to do with the popularity of martial arts in Japan. When you spend your life practicing the real thing for an hour or so a day, a little fantasy in your games is welcome.
If you like fighters, buy it. It is among the best, which is close enough.
